but this is not representative of america the important thing to note about america is achievement and success should be rewarded and not penalize that's what we as republicans believe and richard trumka from the nfl sale stood on the floor of the convention yesterday in interviews made it very clear that al gore supports quote is this party right here has been obviously supportive of them with a makeup of this convention at the same time he felt more supportive of quotas that is way out of the mainstream of the view of the american people because we believed in the paralyzing success written about the compassionate conservatism governor bush's this and this is that when you suck talk talk about tax cuts think about an african american single woman was out there trying to make ends meet in order to send your child to school we talk about social security reform think about people in the american jewish community who are retiring on social security and i have to be able to make ends meet on a satisfactory system of people working in the community today you feel a sense of ownership of the system in the hispanic community think about
the quality of education has been talked about by governor bush in this campaign the truth of the matter is that this campaign is about quotas it's about policy that does something good for all of diverse people of this country that are just at the republican party and the quality of like this country is born well as you may know we have some the strongest gun control laws the nation and i agree hundred percent with governor bush on the need for trigger locks on all weapons sold in fact i have signed such legislation the state of new jersey he agrees on that
than i i'm happy that he does he agrees that we ought to be penalizing using existing laws that we have to penalize people who were caught for crimes with guns and again i've signed legislation that would do that in new jersey we understand the importance of enforcing the laws that we have we may disagree from time to time on the need for further pieces of legislation and the impact that they would have we have very strict laws we enforce them and we've seen gun crimes go down we've seen crimes when juveniles go down and i would add that some of the most important things that we can do as we all stand here problem that we have seen in our states a reduction in violent crime one of the most important things we can do to continue that kind of quality of life improvement is to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to support themselves and their families because that's really at the end of the day one of the most effective tools against crime whether it be with a gun or any other weapon well you
say on the on the issue of gun control we as republicans obviously believe in the second and the constitution of the fact the matter is when we move forward common sense legislation deal with this issue including as governor what causes just said trigger lock legislation legislation calling for twenty four hour background check at gun shows calling for a ban on the importation of that any support at nearly everyone opposes on that issue so we've tried to move forward with common sense legislation at the same time say that we should increase the prosecution we call on the administration to enforce the laws that are on the books and they have been dead a miserable job on that so we have had i believe a very balanced approach from the republican side on this issue is unfortunately the response and you can come into this and they squander they squander that opportunity this we really we
we thought that that that would be better than this to harken back to the sixties is their principal focus of their philosophy that's the nineties a century ago rooted very much even sometimes nineteen thirties almost all century ago we thought this is a chance to lay out a vision for the future and i think it's one of the options they've had problems all the way from the party circuit some of them have been great some of them had to be change the venue on but i will tell you that they've done very very well and entertaining and i welcome all the revenues not want all of you to spend as much money as you can or you're in california but the fact is they have done a miserable job in that area and then at the same time and making an attempt to solidify their base trying to assuage the concerns of the extreme left of the democratic party it has been a tough tough thing but i want to come back again for years from now on another great convention do you
think that is it's been there now i agree that social security's the big issue in this campaign but i think george bush has the response that the public is gonna wanna say because what he's saying is allowing you if you so choose to be able to invest some of your social security savings in it and it can account that is protected you know it's ironic and it's gonna be interesting and how al gore treats this the president himself and al gore submitted in your initial budget a plan to have the federal government
invest some of the social security revenues for people that is the worst possible thing i can think up then all of a sudden our board george bush put forward his proposal that would allow for individuals if they so choose to be able to do that to a degree and then out or back away totally from what the administration puts porter we really didn't say that we were just discussing it then now has come forward again abed that ten days ago i saw him on television camera we're saying that in fact the federal government should be able to invest some of the social security money in the stock market which would be manipulation of the worst order and i think very very dangerous to the overall health of the stock market and free enterprise the country and i don't know where he is now but i believe that you're going to see that george bush's response to the us putting a lot but some social security guaranteeing for those now retired and those near retirement that you will see no change in their benefits that they will see no change in their benefits and the proposals he's put forward to
ensure that young people reach the age of retirement are going to have some that there'd be some reassurance that the money will be there for them and that they'll be able to actually maximize what their benefits are is very very important al gore and bill clinton have allowed us to get to the point where we're in a crisis and to just say that you're going to walk in the social security surplus which george bush agrees with that you put a lock box on it and that's gonna solve the problem is disingenuous in the american people are smarter than that they know it's just putting on the price is right with genitals for miami the two thirds as both the
