Dead fish wash up near Lipari Landfill; Lipori Landfill A.C.
- Transcript
Signs have been posted along the isle Psion lake shore in Gloucester County for a long time telling people the water is no good. Most of the fish in the lake had long since died. But last week hundreds began washing up on the shore. The states began an investigation to see what's causing this latest fish kill. But the lake is fed by chestnut branch creek which runs alongside the contaminated Perry landfill. Just 200 yards upstream it's been several theories put forth. The first and the one that concerns us the most is that due to the Perry landfill that there were additional chemicals released from the info into the lake increasing the toxicity within the past couple weeks there was. People have been in the water and no developed severe infections. Over 40000 barrels of 50 different toxic chemicals are buried in this dump. One of the main ones is B.C.E. dangerous cancer causing agent. There are several homes adjacent to the dump besides a nasty sinus cleaning smell and a lot of suspicions. No one's been able to prove any link to health problems in the area.
Still it is one of the country's 10 worst dumps and last November EPA officials came to Pittman to promise the people Superfund money was available and containment efforts would start this spring. A few weeks ago the borough received word that the cleanup was off indefinitely postponed. We contacted a spokesperson for the EPA today we'd say only that further engineering studies are needed before they can decide how to dispose of the Perry landfill. And he had no idea when that decision might be made. I think we're somewhere in excess of a half a million dollars on various studies of how to clean it up. We have proved that there is a definite problem both from an environmental and from a health standpoint there. However the EPA when it comes down to spending hard dollars to actually go in. And introduce the cleanup techniques that are necessary. There always seems to be something that comes up and we will study the problem for the EPA wants to get the users and the owner of the landfill to help pick up containment cost. It's also looking for a cheaper way
to do the job. Those issues could take months if not years to resolve. People in Pitman are just hoping this latest Fishkill doesn't mean a new movement by the toxic chemicals because it would almost certainly be more rapid than the movement they expect to see from the EPA. BITTMAN Gloucester County I'm Dan HOBSON. I want to talk big strong you know about one inch thick and we have three tubes tied to it but we finally when we took it for the testing on it up or somewhere it cracked so we had to find out something else how to make it not crack. So we put for all the time decided to put four on two so it not worked perfect so we had the four for truth is like a box. We would stay at the hotel and they would go to the meetings and they would talk. Basically what I'm telling you now but with their knowledge of what's what's going on with the project which has specific students who are assigned to that you know with several that mostly that they had years ahead like you know 4 5 0 0
0. All right. What did Nasser they were talking about what they felt about the experiment. As such what they hoped that it would show they are. We went to a seminar and it told us that they you know they were thrilled to have us down and they're really anxious to just decide just as us to see how it comes about. I guess they were just as thrilled as we were and I didn't think they would be as thrilled as we were but they they said they were very happy and pleased the students you know go down and do something like this I was just as thrilled as we were because that's all I can say I mean you know. Did you ever hear of the weather or any other high schools that have gotten involved with this before they said this is the first high school and probably the first maybe what have you done for you in just one hour working yes I'm in Trent State College at the present time and the pre-med program. What did the pretty one experience affect that decision at all.
Sort of but actually I got interested when I went to the science camp there in my junior year of high school and that's what interested me in their you know their medical program I'd always been interested in medicine the way you were in Florida in the launch. Yes. What were your feelings when the shuttle when it it was just amazing I couldn't believe it was. I've never seen anything like it before. What were your feelings to know that you had a part Rosana that was even more amazing because Candy gets so much of a negative image. And now that this happened maybe people see that there are some good things in Camden you know to equal up with the bad and just need a just a two shot. Let's see here. So do you have you noticed that at Woodrow Wilson because of this that there is more interest in science more students going into science you think. Yes well more students are getting interested because they also have a planetarium of Woodrow Wilson I don't know whether or not you heard about that and a lot of the students are getting interested in these things now because
before it was you know read the books and maybe you'll one day be something but now you could read the books and participate in just reading all of the time. OK great. All right thank you very much. I'm there. I know that Nasser took some time with you in explaining about the shuttle system and what was going on. Was there a time when you have students also explain what you had done to the media or to various people. Well there was a group of 10 of us who were at the press site every day and whenever anyone wanted to know about what was going on about our project we always had to explain it to them. As far as NASA's concerned the only people who really got a chance to talk to were the people at the getaway
special processing facility unit and it was a student from Woodrow Wilson and myself who were there and we didn't get a chance to explain to them about our project and how it worked. Tell me about the launch. You were there for the launch. Yes I was in within three miles of the launch I was at the press site. I had an interview that morning so I was right there. 733 wanted to describe to me your feelings cry because I felt so good that there were no complications. And when they said 733 it's took off and all because it was Ride Sally Ride nor answer right along with there was quite a feeling in knowing that you were part of it. Yes it is we all cried and hugged each other was a great feeling. And you're going back down there now. Yes as soon as the shuttle comes in from California then we'll fly to Florida to get our aunts and bring them back to camp to high school along with our film and analyze them and begin comparing our nukes. If you graduate I have yes I have. Are you not going to have a chance. Yes I also have a chance I'm going to contact who we're going to be no matter how
far you go. Mr. Rhys and I and Mrs. Greene will always be in contact. What are your plans for next fall. I plan to go to Camden County College and then I'll be going into the army. We're going to study communications definitely. Okay great. Take more shots or you have to tell them. So you're liable to be a national celebrity after all this hopefully already won that myself already won for. Yes. What was besides a launch what did you do while you're down. Well most of the ball park were divided because of the student the students had activities but the group of Tess's that went to the cape every day we had interviews we had to work on our project. But it did mass ever talk to you about the about the experimenter give you any indication what their feelings were about it. Anthony trust was more than that when he was at the press conference. If the astronauts know we did the only astronaut and that was Colonel Bluebird who will be fine as
TSA but we didn't get a chance to meet any of the ones on the 7th. What is your prediction right now out of the ants do I think they are alive running around ready to come home. Better be still OK and. OK. If you. Look at.
Things. Like. That. We're not. Going to get it. Very often. The efforts of young people particularly inner cities go unnoticed. Well I think the world recognizes is that I want to ask the size of the young people that were involved in Project 81 and again I thank you and this time I'd like to bring to the microphone for remarks. The president of the Board of Education. This is drum the rig's. Thank you.
And our faculty and to the education family of Camden City to do honor and they're willing to interact. As well. As continue in the face of sometimes disappointment given the opportunity and the fact. That they can overcome and has not been forgotten. And. Given an opportunity to develop success and only success can be the end. We do not turn our backs. I just want to thank you and I want to thank all of you. And Governor I would now. Turn this back turn in a stranger's
they're always a little bit mean so much to anyone's life. Thank you and welcome. To. This time I would like to call the podium Dr. Charles smearing the Superintendent Kim schools as. Governor Kaine. Your problem is that the case of course starting that back was Dr. Robert Frost the end of the class of director space projects. He quoted in The National Video of the seven projects the United States of America. The camera project was by far the most of. All exactly the type of course my wife Caribbean
and my friends sitting in. That was great leaders I've heard about what they can do. Now we talk so I go do some sort of above my heart what you've done for the city of Camden. The chemistry was most of all for yourself because you proved yourself that you can do. Governor Kaine very promised a distinguished educators and most of all she pursues. You really have a number of years to keep going when we want a financial group of doctors that work with. Our students and our educators to advance the interest of the young people in this country. Now the matter of equality of opportunity is something our office spoken about as a very elusive goal and I think when the business community often lean that way educators and on On and probably we are the educators. And in this case our city
didn't demonstrate that we are a moderate in the rubber off of our society. There are two and I would like to see this effort well documented and put over enough for just ousted in accomplishment of business. When I watched the ceremony to the. Butt of this I have for these child documented that major corporations run the United States to follow the lead of course the act and get into our cities and get into our schools our time and again congratulations to your students. You're fantastic. Ooh. Where is the singular. Person who deserves the highest commendation for everything that has happened. Or been a good
one. And Mr. And Mr. I'd like you to stand up because we are very proud. Through. That line. Mr Aris has brought significant inquiry. Once again to our city. He was chosen by Princeton University as one of the most outstanding secondary teachers in the state of New Jersey and. Carry you. Through. He. Has received a check for library books in our library. I knew that. I wanted everyone to know I am very proud of my staff members who are here today because. One person's alone
in. The secretaries. Security. Everyone else secretaries. Here today every morning standing. Very. Of the way of the family members joining together to assist in making this project the very best in this nation. I would like my teachers my secretaries my security and everyone. Here my mention to I will. It's great to be here. Caged like this now. Thank you for that reduction of Primus and I delighted and proud to wear this for with 81. That's that I put on. Like you know someday how to get to your loving hands. But. What I am
I am proud to be exact is a very special day when we come together to one of the participants in this kind of projects has been a success and so very very many levels. It's been a success on a scientific level. No question about that because it is able enabled us to learn more about the fact of weightlessness and Koppen Duran's and perhaps through kata and obviously on the forms of life as well. It's been a success on an educational level as you put it so many times already. Because it is really general your interest I suspect in the interest of OG's science and engineering of Camden at Woodrow Wilson High Schools and theirs reminds us of those students and those schools are a lot more than refined they may be on the athletic field. It's been a success on a community love. Because it is royal and high schools into a partnership with Ossie a massive. Temple University. And in doing so it is showing what's possible. When people would together as a team. And finally
no question it's been a success on the seventh level. Because it's taught the rest of the world something about the real camp the camp that is bouncing back and the leadership of Mariam tribes. Were with.
