Budget cutting and consolidation of some department yes you see moves to take channelise license from the parent company. In sports the nets do it again but Rutgers falls short. And Governor Brown is ready to make a new push for taxes. New Jersey Nightly News with Catherine stone and Bill Perry with school lunch. Was. Good evening. New Jersey's chances of getting its first commercial VHF television station are a little brighter tonight. Yesterday the Federal Communications Commission canceled the license of WOR TV channel 9 in New York. And already some New Jerseyans are saying the station should be assigned here. Steve Taylor has more. The FCC says the RKO General Corporation is unqualified to operate Channel
9 and its TV channels in Boston and Los Angeles. The FCC charges that RKO zone or General Tire Rubber pressured advertisers into buying on RKO stations before they could do business with the parent company. Other charges falsifying stockholders reports and bribing foreign officials. The company has admitted maintaining an illegal slush fund for payoffs before 1976 at w o our TV studios today Company officials wouldn't comment on the case except to say they'd be appealing the FCC decision in federal court. But Marcia stern of the New Jersey Coalition for fair broadcasting said her organization was pleased and she said that if Channel 9 is going to be available the FCC should assign it to New Jersey that the people in the state of New Jersey to have a television of their own. This is one which would be available and which could serve the citizens well. RKO general was still operating on Channel 9 today and probably will as long as the case is
in the courts. The appeals process could take years until it's resolved it's unlikely the FCC will even consider reassigning. Channel Nine to New Jersey Karen. Steve does this decision have any thing to do with coverage of New Jersey. Not that I know and it really doesn't now the coalition has been saying that they're not satisfied with Channel Nine's coverage of New Jersey indeed they're not satisfied with any of the VHF stations in New York City and they have been surveying recent changes and they say Channel 9 hasn't improved enough. As a matter of fact they say it has improved at all but that didn't have anything to do with this particular case the FCC was just concerned with what the parent company apparently or allegedly has been doing. There are radio is one of the most popular radio stations in the area. Is that affected by this decision. No not yet is the answer. Not yet. The FCC limited this particular decision to the three television stations New York and Boston and Los Angeles. But there are 12 radio stations that the company owns including W O R A M and
W Excello FM in New York and 10 others as well as another television station in Memphis Tennessee. And what the FCC said is that all of those licenses are in jeopardy. Which implies that there will be some continuing investigation of General Tire and Rubber in RKO general as far as their past activities are concerned. I understand also there are some developments in the other case that affects the New Jersey area that's the question of Channel 13 presence in the state. Where does that stand now there. There have been some changes on that today there. They've been concerned with the physical presence of Channel 13 in New Jersey it's officially licensed here and the FCC is insisting on some sort of actual operation. We learn from informed sources today that w o any team will submit a plan to the FCC on Monday. That's the deadline what 13 is going to propose is that an office and a temporary studio at the Gateway complex in New York be made into a full time studio facility. When he says it will equip and staff the studio to meet the FCC mandate the FCC must decide a court if that plan is good enough and that decision will come sometime in the future.
Good. Thank you Steve. Governor reportedly wants another two hundred ten million dollars in tax money to balance next year's budget. Mariana Rosso reports will be going to the legislature next Tuesday to ask for that money. It's the talk of new state taxes sounds like something you've heard before. It is just three weeks ago the governor tried to ram through what 300 million dollar program of new taxes up against a stone wall or an unwilling legislature. All he got was a 90 million dollar increase in the corporate tax. On Tuesday before and even stonier legislature. It's more Republican now and once again asked for new taxes. Reportedly some members of the administration are thinking about resurrecting the proposal to make professionals pay a sales tax. People like lawyers and architects and accountants. There's also talk about raising the current five percent sales tax to 6 percent
but including enough exemptions to make it acceptable politically. Governor Brown has been saying all along that the reason for the budget gap is simply inflation and he says it will take more than two hundred million dollars in new taxes just to close that gap that doesn't even begin to pay for some of the new programs Byrne asked for in his State of the state message. Things like picking up local welfare costs cleaning up toxic waste and putting more cops on city streets. But the Republicans say they're not convinced there is a budget gap if there is one they'd like to see budget cutting and consolidation of some departments of state government. But they don't want any new taxes. And they say they'll put up a fight if a tax comes up for a vote in Trenton. I Mariama Rosso. The 1979 inflation figures for our area are in and they're not very good. Prices rose ten point six percent in New Jersey last year. That's the third largest rise in one year since World War 2. But as bad as things were we still
made out better than the rest of the nation where prices rose at a thirteen point three percent clip. The major culprits food housing and energy State Farm Insurance is looking for for more money from two hundred sixty thousand people that insurers in the state. The company wants to increase its auto insurance rates by 35 percent and it filed for that rate hike yesterday. State Farm was not included in the latest round of rate hikes pushed through recently by the Department of Insurance. A trade mission to the Soviet Union by New Jersey and New York area business and manufacturing Representatives has been canceled because of the growing tension with Moscow. Allan SAG nerd chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced the cancellation during a luncheon meeting with the with the Newark Coronas yesterday. Sanger said Soviet authorities had been advised the trip would not be appropriate at this time. And he said the trip he hopes can be rescheduled however. A New Jersey advertising company has come up with a controversial new campaign to conserve the state's energy supply. Susan these last
reports are rather notorious figure is being used to help ease a growing national problem. The face is familiar and so is the message that most of us are used to seeing the Ayatollah Khomeini being used in a pitch for the 55 mile an hour speed limit. The State Energy Commission along with Essex County advertising firm have put up three hundred of these black and white billboard editorials as part of a nationwide effort to encourage energy conservation. The hope is the billboard will make us reduce both our speed and our dependence on foreign oil. Well it's been an ongoing campaign to save energy. It's been conclusively proves that. Slower speeds save energy people use less gasoline. I suppose this campaign is perhaps a little more effective than the others because it has a nice picture on it which attracts attention because he's not one of the favored people of our country at the present time. Meanwhile the majority of drivers we talked to feel very differently.
I don't like the billboard and I don't like the bumper stickers and all the shirts especially the ones with all the dirty slogans on it because the simple fact it seems that they've been thumbing their nose at us and been bringin ourselves right down to their level by thumbing our nose back at them. I'm all favor the support that's been given the country lately but I don't like the degrading matter in which it's been done. And I said I want this. FIGHT BACK AND I LOOK couldn't difference. For 3 5 0 0 years of oil you know cut down. I don't think it's a good idea. I think we're teaching everybody to hate each other. I nees not a very pleasant person a little bit I know about him but I don't think that's a good idea for advertising. Wright is saying cut back to 55. What is he got to do with that. Because of the oil. I think there's a lot more to it than just that person.
Following New Jersey's lead outdoor ed firms across the country will be donating more than a million dollars to promote their new campaign and hoping to make sure their billboard drives home an important message. They plan to put up 5000 of them along many of the nation's highways in Fairfield. I'm Susan nice loss. Former State Senator Martin Greenberg is expected to become the president of the golden nuggets operation here in New Jersey. That's the Las Vegas casino firm that is building an 80 million dollar casino hotel on the Atlantic City boardwalk. A spokesman said Greenberg will join the firm March 1st. A Democrat from Essex County Greenberg served in the legislature for six years he was a former law partner of Governor Brendan Byrne and his law firm has been representing the Golden Nugget company Greenberg was the vice chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and supported the legislation that brought the casino industry to New Jersey. You may have seen ads for a unique television program about cancer being shown this week on area public broadcasting stations. It's called Joan Robinson one
woman's story and it's a two and a half hour documentary about her losing battle with that dreaded disease. And I felt Hawkins reports on how people still fighting cancer are approaching this intense film. The documentary has been well-publicized TV Guide promoted the show saying for 22 months she lived with dying. Jamie Robinson was a 41 year old housewife when she was found to have ovarian cancer. From that point on cancer controlled her life. When I catch you. Can I be released for say seven hours. Thank you. Well let's see how King means to lead the nation in yourself. The last time the cameras followed Joan Robinson in and out of the hospital at home with her husband talking about death and just hours before she dies the cameras are still there. It was the way she wanted it so people would see that.
There are two basic groups of cancer patients those living with cancer and those dying with cancer for the more advanced cases they've already been through it and the experts here at Beth Israel Medical Center say they won't want to see it all again on TV so the TV sets will not be tuned to the show on the hospital's oncology or cancer floors. But in the main oncology outpatient clinic where the majority of cancer patients come in for their chemotherapy and other treatments people are going to watch the show. Tough as it is because I think it would probably be educational right help you will you never know how to turn out. You have cancer you think you know me I know from my own family much of the time. Why do you think they wouldn't watch it. Because I think you can actually get to and their doctor says the show should help his patients and especially their families face that truth because I think that there can be nothing that they can show on their on the television that
many of our patients have and haven't seen in person experience or and that we haven't seen experienced and my opinion that the more you know about it the better you want but there is a dissenting voice a surprising one. The American Cancer Society. I think the film or it's entirety is quite a heavy burden. And if the net effect. Is. And perhaps different just and more crimes here. That could be a very detrimental effect because you know really is Cantor's first ally. But back at the oncology unit fear is beaten by understanding and accepting. I think Victor thinks if you can just basically game in Newark. I'm still talking. It's. That program can be seen tomorrow on Channel 13 at 2:30 the epilogue will run Sunday afternoon at 12:30. John Robinson one woman's story will be aired sometime this summer. The four New Jersey public television stations. Now here's the weather
forecast for the state tonight will be partly cloudy and cold with temperatures in the upper teens to low 20s. Tomorrow should be partly sunny and cool. The high should be in the low 30s. And for Sunday Mostly cloudy with a chance of some light snow. Well no one has the sports news tonight he's still sitting in for vacationing Bill Terry.
Thank you Karen. Well the Rutgers basketball team wasn't supposed to do as well as it did last night against the sixth ranked Syracuse team even though the Scarlet Knights lost 69 to 66 the 80 500 fans didn't go away disappointed. But the Booie and Louis show the top rated hit that run almost four years in Syracuse once again bailed the Orangemen out of another precarious situation. Roosevelt Booie and Lewis or combined to hit 20 of 25 shots and a billing Syracuse to turn back the stubborn Scarlet Knights of Rutgers record surprisingly dominated the first 20 minutes of the game against the sixth ranked Orange men wreckers built a 31 22 lead before but we scored seven points in the final minutes of the first half to help Syracuse close the gap to three. Rutgers was down 67 58 with just over two minutes in the game. Then Darrell Strickland hit on an outside jumper to spark a Knights. As the clock ticked away record has gained momentum and Calvin Troy added another bucket from the side 31 seconds remain and Strickland came up with another bucket from the key. The score now 67
64 Syracuse Roy Henson hits after a Syracuse foul shot making it 68 66. Calvin black grabs the rebound but Richard Branson throws it away. Black phallus in Syracuse added another to close out the scoring. A loss but a good effort elsewhere amongst the college ranks Seton Hall down Columbia sixty six to fifty eight. Dan calendar alone had 22 points to pace the pirates. Last night's aggressive performance by Seton Hall enabled them to even their record at 8 Trenton St. down Bloomfield 68 to 64 and Ryder beat Lafayette 83 to 71. Jersey City knocked off a Glassboro in a 76 to 70 final. Well first they were hot and then they were called and then they were hot again. The result was a 98 87 victory for the New Jersey Nets against Washington. Ever since super John made his re-entry onto the court the Nets have won Williams and poured in 16 last night. The next jumped out in front and held an incredible 20 point second period lead but then the roof caved in. That's just couldn't hit anything. And their lead was sliced just for
jump shots quick shots and lay ups and follow ups all missed their marks. Fortunately for the Nets though the defense came through. George Johnson was awesome in blocking shots 3 0 for crucial Washington attempts were stymied by Big George. Once again Mike Nolan came through a pump in twenty eight points including a three point field goal with just under three minutes remaining. Calvin not help bolster the net defense while scoring 18 points from the floor and Eddie Jordan helped out with 13 including three baskets in the final period for the Nets that final once again 98 87. New Jersey. And the Nets are back home again tonight to take on Detroit. A 51 year old native of Argentina who hasn't worked in seven months won the $100000 top prize in the Meadowlands sports lottery one of Ron White was the big winner. And in the presidential race I'm Breaux splurged driven by John Campbell cross the line first in a time of a minute 57. He was followed by pads gypsy and Wilton Royale in
the presidential race is in its second week of a four week run. And for our ski enthusiasts we'd like to clarify the number of trails that are open at Virgin Valley Great Gorge this weekend there are thirty eight open to skiers and not what we reported yesterday. And we end our sports report tonight on a tragic note Hortus racing has lost one of its great drivers in an auto accident. Twenty five year old Peter Horton was killed early today in East Rutherford. He was one of the leading money winners in the sport over the last three years and drove in three races of the Meadowlands last night he won a total of 517 races with purses totaling over six million dollars. Once again harness driver Peter Houghton dead at the age of 25 and that's sports back to you Carol. Thank you Bill. Rocket propellant exploded at a picket Tenney Arsenal this morning sending a blast that was heard and felt miles away. The explosion occurred while workers were routinely burning waste material including an undetermined amount of rocket motor propellant. Generally a spokesman for the Arsenal said a proponent of propellant
BURNS That's a nation is very rare. There were no serious injuries however and there was little damage although an arsenal fireman who was monitoring the fire was treated at a first aid station and then he returned to work. 115 women have been invited to join a special all female state troopers class. The women candidates will spend 20 weeks in physical training and classroom study at the state police
academy in Sea Girt a special female class was set up to get more women into the force which now has only two female troopers. Ratings it seems are all the rage this year. There are Nielsen ratings 10 best movie ratings and earthquakes of course are rated on the Richter scale. Well tonight our Sound Off women's commentator tells us how Brendan Byrne is doing on the Barbara Drake scale. Over the years the women's movement in New Jersey has served to catapult various individuals into a position of some prominence and to be fair the reverse has also been true. Such is the case with Gov. Brendan Byrne following the governor's recent State of the state message. New Jersey Public Television's ad issue program dealt with the governor's speech at one point hosted Minton as a guest journalist to raid the governor's overall performance. I'd like to add my two cents to that. On a scale of one to 10 Brendan Byrne did in his entitle to a solid eight point ninety nine for what he has done to promote equal rights for women in New Jersey. His recent veto of
legislation that would have severely restricted the rights of women to their own reproductive freedom is exemplary. The governor's veto was all the more outstanding considering his Irish Catholic background. The move underscores the importance for more public officials to separate and keep separate. The division of church and state when it comes to an acting public policy the legislature is writing on the other hand is less spectacular with the swearing in of the new legislature the possibility of an erosion of support for women looms ominous in the assembly. We lost five out of 10 women representatives and gained one reducing the total number of assembly women to six. Now all of the women officials past and present not all of them have seen their way to advocating for women's rights among their peers in Trenton. Consequently a lot of hope is riding on the newly elected assembly woman from Ocean County Hazel block. Among her feminist constituents there was a great deal of praise for her involvement in that county's
commission on the status of women and her concern for minority women. Now the MS block will be a regular commuter to Trenton. Her public profile has greatly increased our comments to the press at her swearing in about upholding her level of commitment for the little guy was noteworthy to be sure. What concerns me is the maintenance of her commitment to the little gal. I'm Barbara Drake. It's Friday again and your plans this weekend could include some art exhibits. There is one that takes you back into the 30s and another that launches you right into the future. Here's Diana London with more on those and other happenings. Newark museum isn't the place you'd normally expect to see models of American spacecraft Unless of course they were built by someone like Picasso. This one is it's called the Enterprise after the space ship. And it's a scale model of America's newest spacecraft a cross between an airplane and a rocket. The space shuttle is designed to carry astronauts back and forth to nearby space labs
will gather global weather information survey for petroleum and help to locate sea hazards such as icebergs. This is the last weekend the exhibits on that's at the New York museum Saturday and Sunday from noon until 5:00 on Washington Street in Newark. And sure no is a movie buff. She's also an artist. She combines both in her work on view this weekend at Rutgers University Channel's drawings are inspired from an old movie and she names each drawing after popular songs of the 30s and 40s. This one for example is called Remember each scene captures moments between women of love support and camaraderie. The exhibit is on Saturday from 9 to 5 on Sunday from believe it or not one in the morning. That's at the Mabel Smith Douglas library on Chapel drive on the Douglas College campus in New Brunswick. Instead of this weekend the George Street Playhouse offers a sinister thriller called appropriately victim. The play is by Mario Friday and it revolves around a beautiful woman a threatening
intruder and a revengeful husband couldn't goes up on Saturday at 8:00 on Sunday at 3 and 8. The Playhouse is at 14 George Street in New Brunswick. Tickets range from seven to nine dollars. And the New Jersey Symphony has put together a program featuring the work of some of the greatest French composers. They'll be music by visit Deb. You see Ravel and a violin concerto by South song performed by Atika Favia and that's on Sunday at 1:30 at Summit High School on Kent place Boulevard. And just a final note on another concert in Lynn Croft this weekend they'll be a dual piano performance by Ingrid Claude field and Lillian Livingston that will be on Saturday at 8:30 at Brook Community College in Lynn Croft and they'll play music by Mozart and Brahms. Have a good weekend. Once again our top stories tonight RKO general the owners of WOR Channel 9 TV in New York may not get its license renewed by the Federal Communications Commission. If true that could be good news to those hoping a commercial VHF television license will be assigned
to New Jersey and Governor Brendan Byrne may ask for a 6 percent sales tax when he goes before state legislators Tuesday to deliver his annual budget address. That's an increase of 1 percent. Officials have estimated the state faces a 210 million dollar budget gap. And that's the news for Bill Maher on current St. goodnight for the New Jersey.
