c. The. Activists. In the community preparing to be one of the most active organizations is the Puerto Rican Congress of New Jersey. They are gathering leaders from all over the state to make plans for the years ahead. The purpose of the forum is basically to identify the needs of our community I'm trying to develop strategies in solving our problems in our neighborhoods in our communities so our children will be able to live in better neighborhoods in this state on New Jersey especially in light of the significant changes that this country is undergoing

freed on. Join the bandwagon. The gap is going to widen in my opinion. Up to this challenge and no one else's. So I encourage everyone to join the bandwagon to join it local organizations to do the things that are necessary for us to work as a group so we can have some significant progress. I think it's a maximum for. You know there are about 300 40000 members of the Puerto Rican community and there's about about 300000 members of the Hispanic community of Hispanic descent. I mean over 600000 people in New Jersey of Hispanic descent. And clearly our goals in terms of housing education job opportunity the eradication of drugs in our neighborhoods in our community. It is a common ground. And therefore if we are to progress. Know is an essential element of progress. That's where everything stems from our. Leadership could just be as strong as that base. And we have to continue to have that base

flourish. We have to continue to have that base grow. What I want to see occur more in the 1990s is more student involvement and visibility. As a result. Of. Such efforts will become more respected and more visible in the community. And. Thus. We will establish what we want to accomplish and that's to respect and the dignity that we deserve as Latinos. I have great hopes for the Hispanic women and we're organizing throughout the state of New Jersey through the vote in Congress the Hispanic woman task force and we have. Several groups that like in Lakewood and in Vineland we have a group called the mosque. There was a 14 year old organization of Latinos land the state outside the college level. So we have been organized on several levels. And I hope that through this I we're going to station will gain leadership skills. Education and. As we grow in our community we take a big role because a lot of us

you know. Race our children on our own our own. We will become a stronger community reaching out to help secure funds for nonprofit Hispanic groups in the office of Hispanic affairs in Trenton. This year we're looking at a total budget of one million three hundred twenty five thousand dollars plus whatever ministry of expenses we incur in administrating then the contracts. So basically we do two things. We advocate for a bigger piece. Of the budget in terms of state aid. And then we act. As administrators. To the grantees in terms of once we've secured the funding then we have to distribute it and administer it. So that's basically the money goal or leave. It to function then administratively

that the office carries out. 26 nonprofit organizations that are being sponsored by the Office of Hispanic affairs the nonprofit organizations are the ones that frequently meet and deal with the everyday problems of homelessness unemployment and other issues. But it is important to remember that all of us are responsible for the future of our neighborhoods. The Puerto Rican Congress has already began with the clean up of drugs and Hispanic communities across the state. We'll leave you with their march on Trenton. I. See.
