A. New Jersey night. Was. It was Rebecca in Trenton and Clayton Vaughn. Good evening Rebecca has the night off. In the news a state of emergency exists in the town of new Egypt. Last night's heavy rains flooded a rural community and other South Jersey areas. State gaming officials are investigating a report of missing money from Resorts International casino winnings resorts admits the loss but says there was no embezzlement or skimming involved. And the town of Sea Bright in Monmouth County is closing its one and only school but not without a fight. We'll have a report. In sports Paul Balon reports on Princeton's first day of football practice complete with a new coach. And on a closer look we'll discuss the subject of our freshman survives in college.
It is the state of emergency today roads in Burlington and Ocean Counties were blocked off washed out from space. But new Egypt was hardest hit with electricity and water shut off and 32 people evacuated. It now has more on the story. As near as I can figure it town with the dead center of the storm that hit hard in New Jersey today. Not even the old timers here can remember a flood anywhere near the volume of this one anywhere's been here is up on Main Street. They're about four years and this is the first time that he's experienced anything even going over the dam. The rain started around 6:00 last night by midnight the local civil defense corps have started the actuating residents from her rapidly sinking out of sight under swelling floods the 42 evacuees were first taken to the municipal building when the water there worked its way through the basement up to the first. They moved on to the
American Legion Hall on higher ground. And he put his feet out of bed he thought he put his foot in a bucket of water. And then he put his other foot out not when another bucket of water and then he realized there couldn't be two buckets of water sitting there and my son started laughing because he heard a splash splash you know what was happening. That's when we first found out about the town had more water than anyone knew what to do with thousands of gallons of drinking water had to be trucked in by the Ocean County Civil Defense. The floods had fed sewage into the town well and contaminated the water supply. Despite the general chaos no one was killed or seriously hurt. The driver of this car miraculously avoided serious injury when he drove through danger signs just before dawn and crunched into a sinkhole carved out by the powerful floods. The mood in new Egypt today was almost festive. No one could really go anywhere so people stood around the lakes that once were streets and joked about nature or did a little
fishing. But local civil defense director Ed Ryan had a job to do trying to restore normalcy. At the moment we don't know how badly our water supply has been contaminated and we don't know how badly the bridges been damaged from a traffic standpoint we have no way of knowing to an engineering study is completed I would say that would be at least a week. Town officials say the water should recede by later today but they. Think it'll take a week before they can fix all the damaged roadway and dry the town out. I Mariama also out of New York today and voted to strike if postal workers had to work or union locals decided to call out strike of a new agreement is reached through binding arbitration without workers being able to ratify it. Union leaders from as far away as California were here for yet another episode in the continuing postal spew. Meanwhile in Washington mediation
procedures again aimed at reaching a new contract for postal employees. Even though a contract agreement has been reached with the U.S. Postal Service workers say it's not nearly as good as other recent government contracts. Postal workers want their union leaders to work on improving their contract or there may be an illegal mail strike. Besides a snag in negotiations there's the subject of getting jobs back for workers who were fired for staging wildcat strikes. One of the topics of conversation today was amnesty amnesty for those workers who were fired. Well hopefully we'll get amnesty. No no repercussions of that were fired and getting back to work and fact this is what we've done. Former General president manages to follow. And hopefully we can get him back shortly. A split may be developing between union leaders and postal workers the ones who were fired. I think their representatives may have sold them short. That situation as being as far as it goes the Union officials have not done would have been
mandated to do by the members embody union convention and the membership is extremely dissatisfied. We rejected the contract people are against this 200 of us still fired. And if the union officials don't do nun it isn't going to just go but a board without anything going down again. Postal workers say a strike could come by September 16th if a new agreement isn't reached. In New York City I'm Geoffrey hall. Exxon announced today that it has found signs of oil or natural gas in its first well off the Jersey coast. But the company turns the find inconclusive at this stage and it may take a month or more to tell if it's a strike. Last month the Texaco wellhead gas at two different depths about five miles from the Exxon rig in Texaco's now drilling another well about a mile from its first in an effort to determine the size of the field. There is no official reaction yet to the Exxon announcement but it can only be good news for those who hope the New Jersey coast will be a major source for natural gas. State authorities are investigating the loss of more than $100000 from the gambling cash flow at Resorts International
Casino in Atlantic City this summer. Early reports of the loss indicated embezzlement or skimming may have been involved but resorts president IGY Davis said those terms are not accurate. He said The loss could have been due to new operating procedures at slot machine change both by inexperienced personnel bookkeeping errors or mix ups in cash exchanges with the public. Parents in the tiny Monmouth County town of Sea Bright are up in arms over a decision to close the town's school. And while the school board has voted against them and us a Burger court judge today refused to intervene the parents and their kids say the fights not over yet. SANDRA KING reports. This demonstration. May be only the beginning. That's the word from a group of Seabright parents who began their battle to save the school almost three years ago. That's when state investigators maybe a six year old building a firecracker. And warned that unless the building was brought up to standards it would be closed.
From there it should have been an easy process just appropriate money and make the necessary renovations. The Seabright citizen did vote two to one in favor of a three hundred ninety one thousand dollar bond issue. That's what initial estimates said it would cost to tear out a wooden staircase in the hallway replace ceilings and install five new bathrooms and an elevator. But the parents say their town official stalled for nearly two years and when the bids finally went out last May they found that increased construction costs them one hundred eighty nine thousand dollars short. Since then the school board has refused to approve the additional expenditure and has even voted against putting the matter to the voters. One of Monmouth County judge today said he had no jurisdiction in the fight. It looked like the parents had indeed lost. But they haven't accepted defeat. And while the school board says it's simply a question of economics the parents say some things are more important than money. We have people here whose great grandchildren are in the school the same school that they went
to. We want the tradition but they want the love and we want the education. And we will do anything. Get it. Town officials say the Seabright school won't open next month. Instead the school's 96 kids will be bussed to neighboring Ocean port. But the parents have scheduled still more protests. Some say they won't put their children on the bus at all agree. The fight continues. In Seabright I'm Sandra K.. Former Congressman Henry Health says he will run again in November. Even though he's under indictment on bribery charges two years ago Alsace lost his bid for a seventh term in the house after being charged with accepting over a thousand dollars in bribes from aliens in exchange for legislation to keep those aliens in this country. At a news conference outside his office in East Rutherford today a Democrat told reporters that he will run as an independent. Jeffery hall asked if the indictment might have eroded his credibility among voters.
While I would imagine with some people but by far large you know. By running as an independent Don't you think you're going to split the Democratic vote and throw the election to cubbyhole about I don't think that's the issue I think the issue of the entire campaign is the candidate who is going to address himself most intelligently to the issues that present themselves to the American public and those of the people in the ninth district. Harold Cabaye Hollaback is the GOP incumbent who defeated Elst asking when the indictment was returned his schedule to be tried in December on the bribery charges in February right on the instruction of justice case. The U.S. Commerce Department has agreed to reconsider its decision to include Middlesex County and statistical groups with Essex Union Morris and Somerset counties. At stake federal grants. A lawsuit filed by Middlesex County and Perth Amboy claimed the county would lose $400000 and housing and urban development grants if Middlesex were thrown in with the other counties. Perth Amboy claimed it would lose money to the county and Perth Amboy agreed to drop the suit if the government would review the switch.
It was a monumental traffic jam today around the George Washington Bridge because of a garbage truck load caught fire and kept exploding. The driver wasn't hurt but the wreck closed Interstate 95 and firemen who were called the same the bottle of fire that kept blowing up at one point this afternoon driving was backed up three miles on roads leading to the westbound lanes of the bridge eastbound traffic also affected. The wreckage was finally cleared late this afternoon just in time for the Friday night rush hour Labor Day is traditionally the last big weekend of the summer and many people will be out on the highways. They'll be joined by state police officers participating in a program called care combined accident reduction effort. Greg Morrison I was the story. State police say a record number of people will be on New Jersey roads this weekend. The turnpike alone is bracing for one and three quarter million expected motorist also on the road will be added numbers of state police tactical patrol units moving radar breathalyzer detectors even after the troopers called in on overtime. It's part of a five
state regional effort to reduce traffic accidents during holiday weekends as in the past. Officers will concentrate their efforts on Speeders and Drunk drivers but they'll also be after some new targets unsafe truckers. We are going to restructure our patrols we are going to show a special emphasis on truck safety and for the first time we're going to be utilizing our own helicopter. Group to assist us in detecting speeding truck the truck that's following too closely the truck that is on safely changing lanes and the truck the truck drivers who really are in my view terrorizing the motorist. The choppers will also be used to coordinate the flow of traffic when the volume gets heavy. But police say the best way to avoid problems is to take your time while on the highway in Trenton. This is Greg Morris reporting. But earlier this week we told you about that Hightstown family of seven who had been a victim from their rented home and were unable to find another place to live. I set up housekeeping in two tents in a state park in Freehold. But park rangers told them that I have to be out by today.
Things are finally looking up. Rangers have changed their minds and now say that Mr. and Mrs. Edwards and their five children can stay in the park until they find a permanent place to live. And the news reports of their problem. They've had lots of offers of apartments and mobile homes in the Irving say at least a couple of promising friends in football in the rest of the Garden State Sports News next when the New Jersey nightly news continues. My. God. Here's the weather forecast for the Labor Day weekend. It will be clear and cool tonight in North Jersey partly cloudy in the south. Highs will be in the low 60s tomorrow in North Jersey it'll be mostly sunny and pleasant in the south will have partly sunny weather. Highs will be 75 to 80 degrees at the shore tomorrow it'll be partly cloudy with highs in the mid 70s. Ocean water temperatures will be about 75 degrees. There's a chance of showers on Sunday but it looks like Monday will be sunny and warm.
But. I'm going to go. Visit Bill Bixby. Joining me from Compton. You. Are Next once upon a classic special here on PBS. Don't miss it Saturday at 6:30 on New Jersey Public Television. Good evening. It's already that time of year the National Football League regular season begins this weekend. Tomorrow night in fact the Giants kick off their season on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bill Perry has more. JOHN MCVEIGH took over the Giants in 1976 it was midway into the season the club won three in four under the coach and that second half of the year. Then last season the Giants went 5 and 9 under McVeigh. The coach is now in the second year of a two year contract. They open tomorrow night at Tampa Bay I asked McVeigh this afternoon if he's in a win or
else situation. I think you know any time you're in the in professional sports you get away you know out of clubs and the National Football Conference are considered to be about even with the exception of Dallas So what do you think your club can do. I don't know it's going to be an interesting season we're anxious to get started. I think when we first started playing our preseason games we were ready to play we were anxious to get started and had a good start then they were bought that way in our rush to get into the season and we're anxious to see how good this football team is very has named Jerry Goldstein as a starting quarterback for tomorrow night's game and tomorrow night on the Saturday edition of New Jersey nightly news will hear from Jerry Goldstein at Giants Stadium. Bill Perry. And while the Giants are getting ready to open their season college football is also gearing up most colleges have already been working out. But at Princeton the first day of practice was today as usual practice began with a ceremonial photo day. Photo Day is when all those exciting yearbook action shots are taken because of today's
weather all the activity was Jadwin Gym. Princeton is coming off a three and six season the team hasn't had a winning year since 1970. But because of that at the end of last season head coach was fired. I had been at Princeton for five years. His firing was unpopular with the players and with much of the Princeton community. His replacements Frank Navarro has a tough job on his hands to win over the players and try to bring respectability back to Princeton football. I think that we've got to start our own program a new year and that's got to be based on fundamentals and growth. And like you mentioned has had a winning teams 70. Right. I think we have. Do you see the improvement. Honestly is it possible to have a tremendous academic institution and win football. I think those are compatible goals. Yes as I mentioned many players were quite upset last year when Bob got the
axe but now the shock has worn off a new season is ready to begin. This decision this bitterness that I just have to go with what we have and hope for the best. I think these coaches realize. We really have a good team this year. Everybody says at this time here but if you look at the team is really excited about it. Sisters are too. Princeton opens their season September 23rd at Cornell that long talked about sale of the New Jersey Nets is finally official. Roy sold the team to a group of investors headed by Alan Cohen of New York and Joseph taught of ten to fly the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship is still in progress at the Plainfield country club. This was not a good day for New Jersey golfers. Both Jimmy Dee of Ridgewood and Bobby Cutts of Trenton were eliminated. He was beaten in the fourth round cuts eliminated in the fifth. Only eight players are still in contention including the favorite Bob Clampett of California in the quarter and semifinals are set for tomorrow. The final match will be played on Sunday
and that sports have a good weekend playing ball. Coming up next a closer look at how a college freshman survive that first year. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The song for all this thank you for writing the song.
And. Yeah. Thank you apart of all the acts. Pretty stark funding at 7 o'clock on Jersey Public Television thank you. This month thousands of New Jersey young people will begin their college careers or many of the transition from the relative security of high school and home will be one of the most traumatic experiences of their lives. There's more to it of course than just avoiding the drug scene or becoming overly and maced in the campus social well or a bottom success in college depends a lot on hard work and discipline. This man believes that he knows how today's college freshman can achieve that and get off on the right foot. Years or Bruckner of Cedar Grove graduated magna cum laude three years ago from Seton Hall University. Mr. Bruckner now runs an advertising and consulting business in Livingston. That is a sideline he has privately produced
and offers for sale at $3 this booklet which as its subtitle says is designed to turn freshman apprehension and the confidence of Mr. Bruckner How did you get the idea for the college survival kit in the first place. Did you need it. Well fortunately I had in me a while to adjust. I wish I had it when I went to college just like everyone else when I was in my seeing it happen to feel right around exam time. I looked around me and I saw that many of the seniors were taking a final exam as if the four years of College St. had only had a study take tests and two papers. So I thought back to when I first went away and I said Ching you know a lot of kids could use some practical friendly down to earth and fries and what to expect when they get to college. So that in the summer before they go away they can perhaps bone up on what is expected of them and not really be hit by the avalanche of work that usually is there. I suppose you could argue that that's what freshman orientation courses are supposed to be for but they
rarely are. Well they usually were in itself. The workload. That's what I found. The primary problem of the typical freshman goes into school. Number one they are faced with a tremendous workload anywhere between three to six times as much as high school. In addition to that the relative sophistication of their work is much greater than. They have to. Have to do it on a higher plane. They also don't know how to use their time. Well there's much more free time. There's only two or three hours of class. The problem that. Faces most is they waste our time. Everything costs. I made it a policy to spread everything out throughout the pressure when it came time for
that sort of. However. I think it's supposed to. Make up the calendar. If you have an hour between free time. Rather than going to the cafeteria talking with your friends to someone get something. For 20 30 50 50 the next. It's. Not that hard to work plenty of time to enjoy the things that. Can Make hours. I suppose that's got to be the obvious question is there enough time really in college to have that good time. Well I met my wife and I played a lot of Keisha many. When you. And your
friends are socializing so I think after all the kids have to realize. Guy went to college costs a fortune for the education to get the grades and not to have fun with the other half of what. The education has to come first. So it's a priority ordering blends other things however rather than time management. The business of taking for instance. The route of anonymity the student has a large college lecture class for us. How do you deal with that sort of. Thing. The student has to realize that the professor is. Talking to a class of fifty or a hundred people but he's really just an individual talking to an individual. Professors make quests. For their set aside called worthless hours where the kids can go. And. Discuss any problems they have so it's not really a
situation where the student is just one of hundreds of thousands or even thousands. He may be so in terms of telling moment but he has enough people to see that Pfizer's librarians professors chairman of the public. Can help him out and make a more. Individualized. Book concentrates. Obviously on the freshman who was going in the person who never had a college experience. But there are a lot of people who are in their second and third year in college. I get the feeling they're in big trouble too. Is it too late for those. Now it's not too late to turn yourself around. It's a matter of. If you have a certain nature of college at a time when you're second to 30 you're sort of just starting out. So even if you know you haven't learned how to study adequately some of the hints in the cars can be useful. And it should be that high. No matter what school you going to instruct the same problem to X amount of work and time. That's what it boils down to. Thank you Mr. Parker for being here and
college costs being what they are today you might want to gamble three dollars more on learning in greater detail of Bruckner's advice for academic success. Send the three dollars to this address you will receive the college survival kit might make a nice going away to college present for a freshman friend. And our closer look tomorrow will feature this week in New Jersey our Saturday Review the week's major New Jersey news stories once again. Today's top stories money streets in Egypt in Ocean County under water today the result of overnight cloud bursts. Exxon this afternoon found signs of oil or gas in its first well off the Jersey coast but out of that the find so far is inclusive. It may take another month to see whether the Exxon Wells producer last month at Texaco well in the same area hit natural gas and postal worker union leaders from around the country met today in New York voted to strike again. Postal workers don't get to vote on ratification of that new contract. And that's a good
