This is a joint presentation of New Jersey. New Jersey likely with some graffiti. Good evening. In the news tonight in the Ocean County town of new Egypt the floodwaters have receded and the people who live there are spending their holiday weekend cleaning up. The men who work on the exploratory oil wells off the coast of New Jersey are spending their weekend preparing for a hurricane which may never come. And state residents in general are finding a variety of ways to amuse themselves this last long weekend of summer. We'll show you several examples. In sports Phil Perry joins the New Jersey Nightly News Weekend Edition with an examination of the giants prospects for the season which starts tonight. And on a closer look we'll have a newsman's discussion of the top New Jersey stories of the past week. The village of new Egypt in Ocean County was still in a state of emergency today following heavy flooding there
Thursday night and Friday morning. There were no serious injuries but officials say the damage was at least 2.5 million dollars and probably higher. Reporter Michael Norman went to the village today to check on the cleanup. Yesterday the streets were a lot like Oakford poured over its banks and spilled down main street leaving the center of town two feet underwater. Today local food was back within its banks but Main Street was littered with debris. Emergency vehicles and water soaked property with the exception of Route 528 all roads into town were open people were still drinking bottled water however the town's well can't be used for drinking water for several days. John Gale owns a real estate agency on Main Street. They were pumping the place out today Friday morning the water was a foot over his desk. How much you think you've lost. I really don't know it's several thousand dollars I'm sure but I don't know I have a lot of merchandise and furniture and so forth stored in the back room so I don't know I've been back there yet.
Civil defense director Ed Ryan and Police Chief Glenn Miller set up a makeshift headquarters in the back room of a law office. From there they try to coordinate the cleanup effort in any way they can point. To that. Period until we get the word. Fear of potable water. Right there they said only half of the 50 people evacuated yesterday were back in their homes today. The rest were staying with friends and relatives. Other than that official said everything was going smoothly. I think the folks in town tremendous everybody has been fantastic we've had absolutely no complaints. Everything has gone along fine. The townspeople have cooperated. No one in town can remember the last time the waters of Lake spilled their banks and float so high down Main Street. Police Chief Glenn Miller says this is something he's going to tell his grandchildren about. He and other officials are already calling it the great flood of 78 in new Egypt. I'm Michael Norman. And off the mid-Atlantic coast crewman aboard six oil rigs are preparing for possible trouble
from hurricane Ella. Crews from two of the rigs positioned 75 to 100 in five miles east in the southeast of Atlantic City have already been evacuated by helicopter. And while it's not yet known when or whether that will hit the Baltimore Canyon region hurricane precautions are being taken on all of the oil rigs in the area. The state floodplain management bureau has ordered the operators of the want a reservoir to make repairs in the future and zero dam. The Bureau said yesterday that the Passaic County dam is in fair condition but it's training time would be too slow and a high water emergency. The Bureau said yesterday that the Passaic County dam. Excuse me that you're on the Army Corps of Engineers are making dam inspections around the state. Also yesterday operators of the jersey city reservoir dam in Morris County and the dowdy pond up a dam in Atlantic County were told to develop new systems for handling spills. The Bureau said those dams were in fair to good condition. State police are gearing up to cope with a record number of motorists expected to travel the state's highways this Labor Day weekend. Colonel Clinton the
Gatto says an intensive enforcement program is underway to curtail speeders drunks and other unsafe drivers. Traffic has been building all day today on New Jersey's major roads and state police caution that 14 people were killed on New Jersey roadways last Labor Day weekend. So be careful. Well it looks like New Jersey may get through the opening of school this year without a single teacher strike although teachers in Philadelphia and New Orleans may be on the picket line. The New Jersey Education Association says this state's teachers will be in the classroom when school doors open later this month. Teacher contracts are still up in the air and Camden Fairlawn Pemberton a Maplewood but the NJ EPA reports that teachers will return to work in those districts while their great minds are being negotiated. Reporter Jim Kincaid keeps an eye on New Jersey News in the nation's capital for the New Jersey nightly news. But Jim has a problem. A lot of the newsmakers senators and congressman are out of town on vacation this time of year. So Jim took his microphone to the streets where he found that a lot of out of towners are coming
in. Considering the heat the humidity the sometimes practically on the breathable air it seems somewhat surprising on the face of it that people would choose to spend their precious vacation days in Washington. But they do they leave the comfort of New Jersey and every other state to visit this political amusement park on the Potomac where the rides run spectacular if somewhat symbolic. And we're crunching great distances on foot from one monument to another and up and down seemingly endless flights of steps is relieved only by being open to a busses for a quick look at some of America's better known try. But they persist and their reasons for choosing this place over a beach or an amusement park. Or some other scenic wonder are many. So why did you come to Washington on vacation. Well we came here to see the Capitol and the White House and so it sounds all about you know. The Big Apple. We were on the way back and we thought the children would enjoy
seeing the center of our government. Well we've been here before we like all the sights we want to bring the kids to see them. The biggest waste of time. I have lots of relatives here and see the sights. That's basically it. Was any part of your motive trying to see how your government works. Yeah I kind of see that here. In fact one can learn very little about how government works through a short trip to Washington. It's too little time to learn too much. And a job best done perhaps by a civics teacher back home. But it's not a bad idea for the boss. That's the American people to drop in occasionally and see how things are going with a government that works for us. At least that's the theory. And a later report will see the Rileys of New Jersey got a pleasant surprise. The red carpet treatment no less. In the meantime consider a trip to Washington. And while you're there talk about ballot boxes on Election Day and things like that. It gets attention.
Jim can Kate for New Jersey Nightly News Washington. But it really wasn't necessary to go to Washington or even to leave New Jersey to find special ways of enjoying a Labor Day weekend. Our reporters found activities all up and down the state today for instance and they're having a festival to celebrate America's labor movement. And Jeffrey Hall reports it's the great first of all for obvious reasons on either side of the Paterson. There's the usual fare of the most rides and games. Good authentic ethnic stuff including authentic American watermelon. Today there was an 8 mile radius around the falls that ended with a lot of tired out of shape blunders including one woman who shape has been changing for the last six years. Well my doctor want me to stop around three weeks ago but I just like the competition that's why I. Decided to continue on about the baby you think you're usually like the competition. He does fine just fine. I can feel him kicking going uphill but he's all right going down the hills. So here's the kicker I guess is going to be
a runner. I hope so. The real focus of the festival is a few blocks away from the Falls on Patterson side streets where the U.S. labor movement has roots tours are offered to the city's old mills and factories which played a major role in America's industrial development. This mill for instance was the work site for the construction of locomotives. Now 170 years old it's been converted into a museum to point out the past. And this weekend it serves as a reminder that Labor Day means a lot more than just water and a mile races in Paterson. I'm Jeffrey whole. Units of colonial militia and their revolutionary. Camp followers port mama today to reenact the battle of. The real battle actually took place in April. But the promoters decided during a Labor Day weekend in 1779 72 militia men confronted nearly 800 British troops on an out historic site. The Americans won the engagement.
The militia men also planned with their revolutionary weapons and set up an authentic campsite. Today. And people began their holiday weekend watching the popular the Grateful Dead at Giants Stadium and in the stands began her career during the period. And. Just happened to be 10.
It. Was. The. Giants Stadium at the Meadowlands. I'm Geoffrey. The U.S. Amateur Golf Tournament in Plainfield. Bill Perry will report that story and all the Garden State sports when the New Jersey nightly news continues. Here's the weather forecast for New Jersey tonight should be mostly clear and comfortably cool. Temperatures will range from 58 to 66 degrees. The pollen count today was 28. Tomorrow should be mostly sunny and pleasant with afternoon temperatures in the 80s. Sure tomorrow it'll be partly sunny with temperatures from 77 to 82. The water temperature will be about 75. Hurricane Ella is far out at sea but could cause some showers tomorrow afternoon.
The outlook for Monday Labor Day partly cloudy and cooler. Start your other kind of football this thank you all. You can participate in the soccer revolution what's exploding. All. Summer. Thank you. All the facts. Ready. To. Start. Sunday evening. At 7 o'clock that New Jersey that looked a little thank you. Good evening I'm Bill period. More action today at the U.S. armor Golf Championships at the Point Field country club the quarterfinals and semi's played today in the morning quarters favored Bobby Clampett an 18 year old Brigham Young saw Moore beat Steve all in foreign to Scott Hoke a Wake Forest grad topped Robert Burke one up Big Ten champion John Cook eliminated. Not going up 5 and 3 and Michael Pech defeated Griffin OT 3 and 2 now in the
semis this afternoon Clampett and hope are in extra holes the first to win a hole wins and advances to tomorrow's finals. Cook winning the 20th hole beat one up so the title match will be played tomorrow a 36 hole finals. Seventeen horses including one thousand seventy seven triple crown winner Seattle Slew have been entered in Tuesday night's $150000 added John Patterson handicap at the Meadowlands. Or run from the 16th pole position in the mile and an eighth race. The Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the privilege of opening the 1978 NFL season tonight. The box losers of twenty six in a row over two seasons before winning their last two in one thousand seventy seven get the home field the Giants won a meeting between the two clubs last season 10 zip. Tampa Bay 3 and 1 in the preseason are much improved. The Giants to ensue in the preseason have high hopes listen to starting quarterback Jerry Hall stated we can finish second place being realistic because I'm pretty sure Dallas will be up on top again.
I feel we can go a long ways and we've got a lot to improve upon but I feel that if we can. For a one time plan for potential that we're going to be playoff contenders. What about this open air camp today was the joke of the league last year they're not a joke this time around even last year when people laughed at him that a solid defense was altering people in Amman have taken it for granted maybe that the media and the fans and stuff but when you play against a team like have a bay differentially speaking they were very sound I thought. It's a problem with their office where they couldn't get any points on the board as we did last year also and it caused a lot of problems but this year they got a little more of an office of punch and different just kind of feel quite as long as I'm looking for a very very aggressive hard and aggressive and hard hitting their terms which could be used to describe Giants middle linebacker Harry Carson number 50. Carson and the rest of the giant defense will have to concern themselves with Tampa Bay's rookie quarterback number one draft out of Graham point. Because. When I was in college. He was very impressive at that time.
Right because he could only get better. We've seen that really looks good all fail. They've got a much more pro ball game. Last year a lot of people. Think that. You know they're going to be a pushover. But then that. They're. Much improved. A lot of people Bush shot a Maoist year but offensively you just alluded to the fact that overall there are much better ballclub but you've got to figure out facts if we're going to be a lot stronger. I don't want much better because they play together. More. Thank you. Their backs were. Better. Than the close. Now all this week. We saw this research station next Saturday Rutgers opens its college football season at Penn State last night the Nittany Lions and Temple battle that the vet the owls gave third ranked Penn State. All they could handle it was a 10 7 final. Penn State won it on a 23 yard field goal by MATT BARR with just 10 seconds to play. Mendham New
Jersey's Jean Mayer lost in a second round U.S. Open tennis match today Neyer in the New York court here was eliminated by 12 suited Harold Solomon 6 4 6 To Match Point coming up. They are will be receiving some other results. Third city BML the loss over Stan Smith. What's the biggest Carol I dispute Andrew had us an eighth seeded Raul Ramirez 11 seeded Roscoe Tanner and 16th seeded author ashfall advanced. 13th seeded Jose Luis Clark lost to Bob Lutz 14th seeded while tech 5 back lost to Butch waits the U.S. Open continues through next weekend at Flushing Meadows in New York. That's it for sports. Have a good evening. Thanks Bill and we'd like to welcome Bill Perry to New Jersey nightly news. Bill was the sports director of Charleston South Carolina but he's no stranger to New Jersey. He'll be anchoring our weekend sports coverage from now on. Coming up on a closer look this week in New Jersey. Sometimes you just.
Came to get. My ok. Nothing to seem to do. And now. Here in. New Jersey Public Television. Saturday nights on a closer look we feature a prerecorded discussion of important stories from the previous seven days. The host of This Week in New Jersey is Jerome Wilson. David. This was the week the New York Times reporter Marlon Farber got out of jail at least temporarily. Barbara been locked up since August 4th for refusing to give a judge's notes in the Dr. X murder case. But a unanimous vote of the New Jersey supreme court freed Farber on Wednesday the court also suspended the $5000 a day fine but you've been imposed on the Times as
Farber and his editor came out of the Bergen County jail he was asked for his thoughts on the ruling. Well I have read in the paper I. Climb out of this jail as of this minute and I'm delighted to be out so I have an opportunity to go home. I'm a little misty gratified that the Supreme Court of New Jersey has taken up this matter and I'm sure exercised the greatest consideration of it. And. I'm sure in the end of. Proposition which we believe all along the framework of the law will be vindicated Kyra. He's a colleague in New Jersey for that paper. Also. What do you think of this latest. Question of. Myron had. I'm at. Home. Now
but he feels. That. His main objection that the subpoena by the material. Is too broad and he said that. If the subpoena is made more scaled down then and made more specific that he might have a different response. Perhaps. Richard Hughes the chief justice politically sensitive to the state of peers around the country and the press reputation has perhaps decided. To take it away from us. I think at. That point. First.
Please keep out of jail time. The trial. Of the trial. That. Which is very strong. Talking about the content and the privilege and therefore in effect. And. The. Order. Of. The trial judge. Trout want to. Come up with some sort of arrangement where the defense attorney has to specify what it is for pretty much what it is in Mr far as what it is that he wants. And that's really the core of the issue here is whether
the expectation. That the data. And if it is found is. In. In fact. That could also get the reporter command allow him. Why don't you do that without violating the reporters called I think it's going to be in the highest sense a kind of political sense. OK let's go to another subject. One Thursday of this week the administration admitted that it was or had considered rather adding a 5 percent sales tax to the existing 8 percent tax on gasoline. Which could mean a price increase of 3 cents a gallon at the pump. Jack already filed this report on Thursday. Prices are going up. Even without any additional tax. But the fact that illustration is shuttering have a 5 percent tax hike because gas taxes are the fourth. Largest source of revenue in the state officials. Now two hundred
billion dollar deficit next year will get more tax monies generated. There's also the hope that higher prices at the retail level. Will discourage the stilling pricing consumption of gasoline by state motorists. The bad news about a possible taxing crease is complicated by price increases at the pump. Seen the price of gas jumped by five cents a gallon since April. Oil Company spokesman we talked to refused to comment on that saying it wasn't something they were interested in talking about. But this man does want to talk. Jerry Flora the executive director of the state's gasoline retailers association. He's not have a castle in Texas is a sales tax is just making the state a pawn. In what I think is the rip off of the American public now the rising prices of gas as the companies raise the prices the states collect taxes. I think an investigation of the oil companies will show the prices just
but that won't save consumers money this way we can gas prices around the state will hit an all time high. Oil companies generally refer to the. Phrase. Seasonal. Foreign. Retailers he represents say the price increases to almost 10 cents here in the past 18. Months. Taxes. Have a way of staying around for a while. If you were. Hijacked by John McLaughlin do you feel that the ministration would commit this act of political suicide. An increase in sales tax on gasoline. I don't think this is serious because I don't think the ministrations it's pretty clear. That there will be some kind of new taxes next year. We're at the stage again now where you put forward the most outrageous proposal so that ultimately wind up with a more painless. Ministration even in the few days after that balloon went up and back home again.
Anyway. It was that the land of the mid-Atlantic. Well also on Thursday Governor Byrne went to Washington to land support to the president's fight for natural gas deregulation. Byrne was one of several governors who visited the White House. Jim Kincaid filed this report. It was lobbying at the highest level. The president making a speech to the governors obviously hoping for their help with Congress. The object passage of the natural gas compromise the heart of the Carter energy program. After the meeting we spoke with Governor. Fighting a position of much smaller government. Feeling a certain way he's fighting for this determination that you've got to.
Basically then governor Byrne is in agreement with the president terms it. Fair well balanced and desperately needed. In Washington for New Jersey. From watching he was not happy with the regulation and then. He said the president. Is the president. Perhaps where Governor Byrd and. Carson Pirie invited to the investiture. Do you think the correct. Change in attitude is for the primary.
To carry. This state. And to have. Carter. Conference. Politically. But I think it's probably a fair summary of. Respect for. The burning. OK.
That's good. Tomorrow night on a closer look will visit a special school for autistic children. Once again our top stories in the village of new Egypt in Ocean County. The floodwaters have gone but the mess will be there for some time. It's considered likely that hurricane will affect New Jersey but all the oil 100 miles east of Atlantic City men are being evacuated and other precautions are being taken. And that's the new. Jersey. Record.
