"'Domestic Violence: Faces of Fear' was clearly an example of public service. NJN first examined the issue of domestic violence in 1985 in 'Battered Wives: Shattered Lives,' and follow-up call-in programs. In 1996, NJN again looked at the issue of domestic violence and examined innovative programs aimed at breaking the silence. "The documentary first aired on NJN. The regional broadcast was followed by a pre-taped [panel] discussion with New Jersey domestic violence experts. Following the national airing of the documentary, two days later, NJN produced two live call-in programs---one for the East Coast and one for the West Coast. Experienced hotline workers and prominent domestic violence experts were on hand to answer viewer questions. "NJN partnered with the new National Domestic Violence Hotline to get crisis calls handled. The Hotline reported more calls than ever before following the broadcast. NJN also partnered with the Family Violence Prevention Fund in San Francisco to provide 'Take Action' kits in Spanish and English for viewers."--1996 Peabody Awards entry form. This documentary focuses on how different types of domestic violence show up in relationships, the resources and training available, and advice and encouragement from experts and survivors of domestic violence on how to get help. Looks at domestic violence in different cultures, including the Jewish, Black, LatinX, and gay/lesbian communities. Includes interviews with Janice Davis Miller, Roberta Cooper Ramo, Judith L.
