Oh. My New Jersey night. Oh my God. With Rebecca Schauble in Trenton and Clayton Vaughn. Good evening. In the news tonight Texaco says it's found natural gas off the Jersey coast the first such find since drilling began in the Baltimore Canyon. The state Senate has passed two contradictory bills and it restoring Sunday closing blue laws and Princeton University gives us a look at nuclear fusion machine a device that may someday and most of our energy problems quite get it back up. And sports ball bought lawn I was an obituary on Jersey City boxer Kevin Smith. And on a closer look we'll see what is and is not being done to help the handicapped get around. Texaco announced today that it did discover natural
gas in the Baltimore Canyon a hundred miles off the coast of Atlantic City. But in the announcement Texaco officials called off on only moderately encouraging and reporter Jack Canaday tells us why. Workers began burning off gas about eight o'clock last night. Texaco officials who operate the exploratory rig they all join five other companies say the find of this wildcat well after digging down almost two and a half miles below the surface of the ocean is just the beginning. The flow rate here is seven and one half million cubic feet of natural gas per day. But Texaco says it needs several more wells at the full rate of 200 million cubic feet a day to make the following commercially profitable. At a press conference in New York. Company officials remain cautious even as the news sent Texaco stocks soaring and heavy trading on Wall Street. One gas well is not in this particular
situation offshore of the Eastern Seaboard in 400 feet of water. A commercial discovery the outlook has become moderately encouraging as compared to the pre drilling picture which was in our view all was in the lower end of the spectrum. It will take almost a year company officials say before they will know for sure if the find this commercial. But even if the other wells to be drilled on this 6000 acre tract also hit gas. Officials estimate it would supply only 20 percent of the gas used in the Northeast each year. The effect of this find on consumers from Maine to Pennsylvania including New Jersey is still not clear. But Texaco oil officials here say that even optimistically with a commercial farm in the next few months it would only cut consumers gas bills by a few pennies a month and that would have been for almost seven years at the Chrysler Building in New York.
I'm Jack Carter. A great coil tanker carrying 15 million gallons of crude oil ran aground this morning about 20 miles southeast of Cape May. But refloated this afternoon after being stuck for eight hours there appears to be no oil spill age after the ship steams to the lower Delaware Bay and anchors a diving team will inspect it for damage and possible leaks. The tanker was en route from Venezuela to the British petroleum refinery at Marcus Hook Pennsylvania when it hit hard sand and about 30 feet of water and ground Rebecca. Scientists at Princeton University today confirm they've achieved a breakthrough in the search for cheap clean electrical power. It came in a continuing experiment with nuclear fusion. It's the same reaction that occurs inside the sun. My power has the story. The breakthrough happened in this machine right after the Fourth of July. It has to do with heat. Princeton scientists burn plasma inside this device at 60 million degrees centigrade. That's far hotter than anyone's been able to
do it before but still not hot enough to actually produce conventional electricity. There's no questioning the scientific achievement here. But to put it in a layman's perspective of all the energy put into this machine scientists got 1 percent out of it. At the other end they will not get a hundred percent out of the other end until a new plant is built five years from now. That plant is under construction now. It will cost taxpayers almost a quarter of a billion dollars. But some proponents of nuclear fusion say it's worth it. In the Princeton breakthrough is the beginning of the end of the oil crisis. But even the researchers here aren't that optimistic. Well the oil crisis is definitely not over and will get worse before it gets better. Fusion power will not significantly step in to help until the year 2000 or even if you're years later all depending on the horrendous latest pursuit. Dr. Freeman said the breakthrough to 60 million degrees also achieved another
milestone before he said something always went wrong this time. Nothing screwed up. At Princeton University. I might however. The state Senate today voted to restore bans on Sunday shopping in the 10 New Jersey counties repealed by the new criminal code. But the Senate was unsure whether the assembly would buy the idea of simply restoring the Sunday blue laws so the Senate approved another bill excuse me that would let voters in the counties decide again whether they want the laws. So has a report. The legislature is well known for its political horse trading but the Senate went to unusual lengths today when it approved two bills so that the assembly can pick the version it wants one bill sponsored by Senator Martin Greenburg puts the Sunday clothes back on the books in Essex Morris Union Middlesex Hudson Passaic Somerset Monmouth and Cumberland counties.
Those are the counties that voted back in 1959 to keep stores closed on Sundays. The other 11 counties voted to open them says he sponsored his bill because legislators last month didn't realize they were voting to repeal the laws when they approved the criminal code. Maybe. Do you think that knowledge of the legislature at the time didn't act. But despite the protests of mom and pop stores that say they'll be forced into a seven day a week competition with the malls if the Blue Laws stay repealed the senators also realize that there's considerable sentiment from voters who like the idea of shopping on Sunday and even shopping in the
Saturday used house cleaning and shopping and they want to reserve their right to take your older or 7 year old son or daughter shopping to buy a suit or a trip to the merchants and shoppers. The Senate also approved graves bill to put the question of Sunday shopping on the ballot in November. Graves says that he'll withdraw his bill if the assembly approves the Greenburg bill but he thinks the voters would be a better judge of shopping and might have an easier time of deciding it than the legislature. I Mariama also. New Jersey last year received almost 25 million dollars in federal money and Urban Development. Democratic senator Harrison Williams today issued a one year progress report saying that only New York Ohio and Massachusetts receive more federal urban grants. William said the point of the money is to stop urban decay. It's expected that the 25 million federal dollars will generate another 25 million from private industry. Quite.
More than 100 residents of Hightstown had to be evacuated from their homes in the middle of the night last night because a truck carrying 20 tons of ammonium nitrate lost the load when the truck hit a low bridge ammonium nitrate is used as an explosive and it was on its way to the Naval ammunition depot and hurled the accident happened to 120 this morning. Area residents didn't get back into their houses until five hours later the police so the truck missed clearing the bridge by about a foot. The only injury the truck driver's Cutlip were 21 injuries none serious on a bus accident last night on the turnpike in London. The boss was a Lincoln transit charter headed for Manhattan from great adventure blew a tire hit a guardrail and ended up blocking two lanes of traffic. Movie making becoming big business here in New Jersey with a nudge from the New Jersey Film Commission. Growing numbers of filmmakers are turning to the Garden State and even some of our more unlikely locations. So I'm working on reports. Roll it. Be quiet everybody please.
Sticks to one thousand thirty seven. Actually the action takes place in a prison yard. But these are no ordinary inmates. In fact their actors gave us the stars of the movie night hours for the extras that are the real thing. Men serving terms up to life at a state prison. Now back on the set for the day is the prison itself. It's the eighth movie to be shot in New Jersey since January. That's because the state's aggressive new film commission has spread the word that filmmakers needn't look further for whatever they need. People who were filmed here are our best advertisement so they are the ones who are now out telling other people how great it was to shoot in New Jersey the cooperation was fantastic. The locations of their medications the Virgina them been seen before and we have everything for Gabe Walsh the notion of filming in New Jersey was a novel one. But after five weeks of on
location shooting in Hoboken New Jersey city Teaneck and now it couldn't be more pleased. It was like walking into a Shangri-La location with all the cooperation. Everybody gay that may be a nice place to visit would like to live here. Oh I love it here. I'm thinking of moving to hobo night isn't a prison movie. In fact only about one minute of what was shot here today will actually make it past the cutting room. But that's how movies are made and more and more movies are being made in New Jersey. I always state prison break a contract talks resumed this afternoon in the New York newspaper strike as the first negotiating session son's press man walked off their job Wednesday shutting down the Times The Daily News and The Post which combined have a circulation of several hundred thousand her New Jersey paper said today the strike is costing them two million dollars a day. President walked out after the papers posted new work rules the president say will cost half of them their jobs. As talks began today both sides so the strike could be a long one.
Rebecca. The damage caused by gypsy moths to trees in New Jersey is the worst in eight years. While experts were saying a month ago that the more Florida had a foliated more than 100000 acres of trees in the state. Officials now say the damage was twice that. Trees were stripped of their leaves and two hundred five thousand acres and most of that was in northern New Jersey. Two years ago a New Jersey doctor refused to go to a hospital to treat a 10 year old girl suffering an asthma attack. We don't know why that doctor refused to go but the patient died later that day. The physician Doctor now lives in Louisiana. The New Jersey medical examiner scheduled a hearing for last Wednesday to review the doctor's license. But the doctor sent word that he couldn't attend. He said he's too ill to make the trip. The board has asked the attorney general's office to check it out. A 39 year old woman who's been living in a bathroom at the Trenton police station for the past three
months has new lodgings a cell at the Mercer County Detention Center Evaline Layton who was allowed to use the first floor lady's room as a home was forced out this weekend. Apparently the Trenton Police gave up repeated attempts to find the woman a job. They also got tired of complaints that she was locking others out of the room so they lodged trespass charges and line with the Garden State's sports coming up. Stay with us now. Here's the New Jersey weather forecast. It'll be fair tonight with temperatures from about 66 to 71 degrees. Tomorrow after some patchy fog in the morning skies will clear for sunny and very warm afternoon. High temperatures will range from 86 to 91 degrees. The weather will be sunny and warm at the shore tomorrow highs will be from 82 to 87 degrees with water temperatures of about 70 degrees. Outlook for Wednesday. Hazy hot and humid.
I joined me co-host for the final look. Thank you. Friday have not. A New Jersey Public Television. Good evening. Funeral services will be held Wednesday for Jersey City boxer Kevin Smith. Smith was an up and coming 20 year old light heavyweight. But yesterday morning he died apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the head. As we reported back in June Kevin Smith worked as a driver for Jersey City Mayor Tommy Smith No relation. But while driving paid the bills Kevin Smith's main driver boxing at the time we take this footage Smith said I want to live in fights and last only two and was one of the
most popular figures in Jersey City. I know a lot of people through my life I have a lot of friends from my neighborhoods and I've been everywhere and it's crowded. I want to see somebody make a home. You know I'm trying my hardest to do it. The affection with which Jersey City fight fans held Kevin Smith was evident a few nights later on June 13 in this bout with my quarry. The fight ended in a draw. Smith won one fight since then and was next expected to meet Olympic gold medalist Michael Spinks. That could have propelled his name and his career. But this weekend he apparently killed himself. The reaction of friends predictable shock. The new Kevin Smith quite well. He promoted three of Smith's fights and today I still can't believe that this kid would do such a thing. He said he was a good kid. From your dealings with Kevin Smith was he troubled in any way.
That's a tough thing to say I don't know his inner self I don't know you know I just I just can't pin him down all I know is his hearers in the ring. This guy had more guts and then any fighter I've seen. One thing we haven't touched on. If Kevin Smith was and that's what it looks like to the police. QUESTION At least right now no one can answer as his manager and best friend Johnny Magner told me this afternoon. His career was headed up and there were no obvious financial problems. In fact no problems at all. Kevin Smith's death a mystery. Kevin Smith dead at age 20. The Cosmos continue their playoff competition tonight with a second round game against the Minnesota kicks in Bloomington the cosmos and kicks played once or earlier this year the cosmos coming out on top for the two and the first round of the playoffs last week. The Cosmos crushed Seattle 5 to 2. Here's how the North American Soccer League playoffs work. Eight teams are still alive.
The second round competition in progress now is a best of two series. The cosmos for example will play Minnesota on the road tonight and then at home in Giants stadium Wednesday. Whichever team has the highest combined total of goals in those two games moves on to the League semifinals. Also best of two it all leads to Soccer Bowl 78 for the league championship. That game is separate Giants Stadium on Sunday Aug. 27. The Cosmos by the way are in good physical shape for tonight's game. All the regulars should see action counting the regular season and the one playoff game the Kosmos current record is twenty five and six. And while soccer may be on the rise football is still America's favorite televised sport. That's according to a survey released by Opinion Research Corporation of Princeton. That survey found that 60 percent of television viewers questioned watched pro football on the tube. College football was second baseball third soccer far down the list only 6 percent. Rebecca thanks Paul and sound off tonight another commentary from Jerome Wilson
the host of W any 213 Stateline New Jersey New York City's latest chapter in its seemingly endless fiscal crisis brings to mind that you don't see the likes of President Carter coming into New Jersey with promised loan guarantees by the federal government. The reason is he doesn't have to for all the arrogance that New Yorkers sometimes impose on New Jersey. The fiscal health of New Jersey is virtually without rival. For one thing the state has a triple-A bond rating which means that New Jersey can borrow money just about as cheaply as it can be borrow. Only one other state in the entire northeast New Hampshire has a similar high rating. Not only does state government have a top rank in the nation's money markets but the cities of New Jersey enjoy an 8 rating which is high indeed for urban centers these days. Ball State Treasurer Clifford Goldman and his predecessor Richard Leone ascribe the state's high fiscal ratings to factors such as the state income tax. The success of the Meadowlands and that state government has had a conservative rate of growth
as have the salaries of public employees in the state. All this is not to say that taxpayer groups in New Jersey are wholly satisfied still by these objective standards. New Jersey is setting an example which is less fortunate neighbors such as New York and Pennsylvania could well look up to. I'm Jerome wells. OK. Russian. Mother. By this magnificent. View
of Russia. Join us for a fascinating look at Russia and her people. Along. The New Jersey Public Television. More than 50000 people in New Jersey have some form of physical disability. For years the disabled were confined to institutions excluded from the mainstream of society. But now there is a growing effort on the part of the disabled to fight what they see as widespread discrimination. Tim say Gos is 28 years old and lives in Orange. Two years ago a serious accident left him paralyzed. Since then he has been fighting not only his own disability but the physical and social barriers that confront individuals who must travel in wheelchairs. He spoke with New Jersey Nightly News producer Bill Line run off. People's attitude towards what I can and cannot do.
I sort of have to be bullheaded in. You know. Refuse or help. At times. Just to let people know that I can do things which gets me in trouble. First there's times when I do actually need help. And. When that. Time arises that I do need help. People are very unsure and very wary of what to do. Going down to three stairs that say I need help. People aren't sure how to handle the wheelchair they're very unsure. Of how fragile is this person. And. Their overcautious ness actually. Causes trouble. People surprised by the fact that you drive. Oh yeah. Yeah. There are. People coming checking out my car how do you do this has to work. And I often go through the process of showing them how the car is rigged so I can drive it. I try to get jobs to see this.
But I see it as a policy of accounting social security disability which I collect. Because the accident. As income. Veterans Disability is not counted as income. The income problem is that since I'm collecting more than their stated. Allotment there are limits. That I'm not. Eligible for see the job unless I drop my disability payments for three months. And I know how they expect me to live on nothing for three months. But they said after that three month period then you get a city job. I originally went to Cedar looking for a job. That was being offered at the at Orange Recreation Department. Working with handicapped people. The problem arose because of the income I was disqualified from the job. Orange recreation department then said they had a part time job for me. Teaching music at one of the grammar schools. I
said great. You know I'm willing to take this job. I asked if it was accessible and they said well they're not sure. After further checking they said no it's not. And I came to. I was offered a job that I couldn't get to. Again I get up to the front step no further. He has an authority is a failure situation. I receive subsidies from. The Housing Authority under Section 8. Because my low income in disability I qualify for Section 8 housing. The problem arises when I get. To go to apply. Go through review of my files go to speak to. The people at the authority for various reasons. The house in authority is not accessible. There in the. Public. Housing Projects. The housing projects. From I understand.
Have met a few people who are in wheelchairs. Are not accessible. People are virtually trapped inside these public buildings. There are so far as I know no plans to make the successful. There is a service ramp. Namely a garbage tram. Going down to the basement which is set at extremely steep angle nowhere near state regulations or federal regulations. It's virtually dangerous to go down that in a wheelchair. Yet this is their only access in and out. People in wheelchairs. After all you've been through. Are you bitter. Extremely bitter. And. So again. It classifies. In some ways classifies a handicapped person as a second class individual. Not being able to gain access into a public building. Not being allowed or. Decide. It's not saying you're not allowed to go in.
It's just that the barriers are there therefore making it impossible to get in. Recent changes in the law require that all new buildings constructed with federal money. And any buildings that are as federally supported programs must be barrier free. That means the buildings must be accessible to those who have sight or hearing disabilities or those confined in wheelchairs. But even government officials admit it may be years before these regulations are fully implemented. Once again our top stories Texaco may have struck it rich off the Jersey coast its found natural gas in the Baltimore Canyon. The state Senate has passed two bills aimed at restoring New Jersey's blue laws. New Jersey share a federal urban grants last year amounted to almost twenty five million dollars. And although talks have resumed to settle the New York newspaper strike both sides say it's going to be a long one. Right. That's the news we welcome your letters on New Jersey problems achievements and issues the address is cn 7 7 7 Trenton 0 8 6 2 5 the seedlings have to do with this news broadcast from Thomas Silva of Bayonne.
I've watched other new shows but they focus mainly on New York and I think that's a damn shame. But your show is just New Jersey and that's what I like. Since I live in it from John Searle Jr. of Richmond I've seen your news and I find that many times South Jersey does not have as much exposure as we should. If you don't shape up Philadelphia will be my only city for South Jersey New Jersey. And finally this from Mrs. beholder of Glen Gardner I was so bored with both New York and Philadelphia news and was so depressed after listening to all the murders rape arson etc. of those cities it is so refreshing to listen to only New Jersey New Jersey. I like the no frills way it is presented although since you have been getting letters you have changed slightly. I hope you go back to just being yourselves. Goodnight Rebecca. Goodnight Clayton.
