This program is made possible in part by Gramps from the standard bred breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey incorporated the New Jersey Department of Agriculture and the freehold Racing Association. You are watching the willow wiper storm through the stretch and last year's Aubrey's Cornell memorial pace at Freehold Raceway. Real life as a four year old set a new world record on a half mile track one 55 and one some other past winners in the Cornell face include Secret Service in 1981 direct studio in 80. And rambling Lilian 79 as a nine year old rambling Willy is the only horse to win this race twice. He also won it in 1977. For many horses turning four means going out to stud there is much more money to be made from breeding and racing back for those horses that stay on the track. You are Bruce Cornell memorial page is the
premier race the four year old set up at Freehold and one of the top races in the country last year's field has been called the best of any race ever at Freehold Raceway and today it's the 16th edition of the prestigious job Bruce Cornell memorial place. We'd like to tell you it's a beautiful day but that is not the case. We'll carry on our harness racing expert John Barry standing by here we are at Freehold Raceway. And John not as we saw Willow wiper wind last year in that record time the sun was shining ideal conditions today of course anything but ideal conditions that is the story line out here last year the great field what about the field this year. It's a small field a field of six. And most observers figured two horse race came from course of the year last year and harness racing and my bill forward. It's a small but select feel in the cold learnings that combine their earnings are over two and a half million
dollars so it's a very good field today. And of course cam is a star and we'll see how he does on this kind of sloppy race track. My bill isn't super of shaved my the samurais has the rail he'll be a threat today to the conditions what will it all mean. Well it just means that we won't have another world record as we did last year but it will mean that we still will have a great great race. It's the 16th annual our Bruce Cornell memorial place. Obviously Pat's Scanlan is a lot brighter than John very and yours truly the PBS broadcast team continues here with harness racing a New Jersey network very very and Scanlan Pats care and one is standing by inside where it's warm and dry Patrick. Thank you Bill of course you'll have the last laugh as I'll be going over to the winner's circle at the conclusion of this Cornell pace. But for now inside and joining me Lester Bud pullin the trainer of my bill forward. But let me back it up five years to the standard Boat Owners Association yearling sale at the Meadowlands. Couple hundred horses to choose from you and your owners choose my bill
for what and pay 60 $200. Now as a six year old my bill for his one five hundred fifty four thousand dollars to date. That is some kind of return on investment. That's as I like to do it every year. But let me straighten the record. I had nothing to do with purchasing my bill forward Dr. Chiao did this on his own. Forest picking out a yearling of this type. Everybody in the horse business has to go about the same way it's a simple recipe. You study your catalog for pedigrees and they add a couple ounces of that. Then you go to the sales and you look at these individual yearlings for confirmation and a couple ounces of that. And you take them home and you fill the pot the rest away with Rocco's an awful lot of luck involved. But did you know that my bill for was going to be a great free for all or from day one when you began training him. Now I had no idea I'd be this caliber of a horse. He seems better this year than ever two years ago he was a Delaware Valley pacer of the year. And last year he was USDA District 12 horse of the year so he's always had direct recognition
fishier he's always had the speed but this year he seems to put it all together and he can still has his great speed that he can carry and. Go for the lead from the beginning. Well I leave that strictly up to the driver. You can't make up your mind how to drive a race prior to a race. They have to see what the other horses are doing but the way he can leave I certainly would think I would expect him to be leaving with him yes. OK John Patterson Jr. The driver today thank you very much but call and curse my bill forward it was a great find and it is a great story you know so many great stories in the back stretch of a racetrack. Got it all up. Drivers horses owners grooms some great relationships. Now let's take time out for a light look at life on the backstretch. Going OK. I. Was.
Going to. Get. Over. It. OK I. Am going to end. Up. Going. To ever. Again. The. Guts
of the show. Q Thank you. Thanks. Thank you thank you. Q. Thank you. Phil Perry and John Barrie at four year old Royce were in that video that piece put together with video shot up prior to today on a much nicer day in just about any day of the year would qualify as a nicer day. Thirty six degrees John some 40 degrees less than it was a year ago for the author Bruce Cornell memorial place when will the white bird set the record cam fellah 1982 harness racing horse of the year 28 of
33 last year brought home for three best far in 1983. My bill forward has four straight victories as we mentioned those two perhaps the two to look through our field of six we had a late scratch but had nothing to do with the weather conditions that scratch actually coming yesterday. You know Raggedy Man is out of this race he put in a good performance last week but it was a little under the weather for today's competition so he is out OK with 12 minutes to go before post time. There was a look at the odds and John quickly you can go through it it's the 11th race this afternoon at freeholder Amaitis Aylmer's number one is 7 to want at this point Bob Del Campo will be in the fight Duncan's right with Phil O'Donnell his 12 to one cam fellow right now is a favorite pad pro on the bike 45 Paulsboro Ray Rehman 40 to one Raggedy Man is out. My bill forward Number Six will leave from post five is the second choice of three to two with John Patterson Jr. Kara Moore number seven will leave from post 6 with Jack Moyes he is now 25 to 1 so the odds right here with still a full 12 minutes to go.
Reflecting what we've been talking about. Yeah the public thinks it's a two horse affair at this point but we can't. We can't discount any of Especially might assail Mars to a show and a good bit of sloppy tracks in the past and I look for him to give a good performance track condition sloppy Of course the half mile track here at Freehold they will go around twice meaning they will be covering some of the distance that they've messed up a bit right here. This track is classified as sloppy but it is still rather hard on the surface and dry in the track. Man has done a magnificent job in keeping this racing overall very very good. Matter of fact the invitational went just a shade over two minutes two minutes and two fifths. OK last Saturday just one week ago in graduate series competition here at Freehold we will see cam fell in the second division John he came up not quite empty but he didn't win camp or was second despite a great performance.
While the second division of the graduate last Saturday at Freehold and cam fell out and now second on the outside here put in one of the gamest performances in the history of Freehold Raceway. But his speed hard and gameness did not result in a victory. Outside every step of the mile through fractions of twenty three fifty seven and three and one twenty six and four cam fellows could do no better than second against his stablemate Jap's eternity. Harry's got a head up on Linton Mick Faber on the inside and now from far back closing in is Jeff's eternity and as they turn for home these three races a team but now Cam fella clears and gets a length lead but enjoying a perfect trip. Jeff's eternity goes right alongside and puts her neck up right at the wire to win and won 57 and to fifth. OK John a little bit later on be for the start of today's race Pats game going we'll. Have an interview with Pat Crowe the trainer driver of camp and
he was parked in fact he was parked so long I was surprised I didn't get a ticket a week ago. Went to great trip and he didn't win but he was a champion in defeat. And up Pat Pat Crow will discuss just what camp problems are a little bit on again. Well for the three of us for this year at the top John we talked about some of the previous winners of this prestigious race and Grambling will be still prominent in the harness racing game among others 13 as a matter of fact he was supposed to try and surpass us all time money winning mark last night at Maywood park. But he was scratched and taken X-rays of his leg today and we'll see if he can do it in the future what about some of the others. Well Andy's Bye-Bye is now 13 he raced today and he won this event in 1975. OK. The field John Barry will take you through the field of six with our pre race post parade. Number one might us Alomar hearse driven by Bob Del Campo this 6 year old by a high ideal and he's been a great race horse a $400000 winner.
Fifty seven thousand three hundred this year in just 12 starts two of them wins and the fastest 156 and one at the Meadowlands as a lifetime mark of 154 and 3. Last week over at the big Emmy was photoed out and won 55 in four and the Rio will definitely help this one today I look for a good performance. Number two Duncan's right a five year old by Isle of Wight driven by the nation's leading driver below Donald three for 11 in the win column this year the fastest in 155 in four which was a very game performance a couple of weeks ago in condition company at the Meadowlands. He's earned 45000 this year and that puts his lifetime at two hundred thirty three thousand. I'm looking for a good performance but he may be a notch over his head. Number three cam fellow harness racing is horse of the year last year with eight hundred seventy nine thousand dollars in bounty on the strength of 28 wins in 33 starts this year he is 0 for 3 although he's got a couple of seconds and a third
and he's won three qualifying races the fastest in 156 and two fifths. Very game performance last week and I look for a very game performance this week with Pat crow in the bike this 4 year old to be right there. Number four is Paulsboro four year old by Nero and this is kind of an all or nothing at all horse he has four wins in seven starts this year no seconds no third thirty two thousand four hundred in earnings lifetime he's got one hundred forty four thousand on his car. But he has shown brilliance sparks in his career like last year at Springfield when he won and won 54 and won. And then this week though you may be a little bit over his head he won his last in two minutes in a fifth but he's not playing with kids this week. Number six is my bill forward with John Patterson Jr. in the bike this six year old by Isle of Wight cost sixty two hundred is a year five years ago and has won five hundred fifty four thousand dollars. One of the best Free-For-All ER's in training today he's won five of 14 this
year and one hundred twenty three thousand dollars a little bit more than that. His best a 156 in for a mile at Roosevelt raceways won his last four in a row. And if you want to see a horse leave like a shot out of the gate. My BIL can do it if he certainly does elect to and we'll see if he does. He's the main contender in this event. Number seven is Carol more driven by Jack noisey Evan this one has turned out to be just a great great race horse 5 year old by Jolly Roger has won four hundred five thousand dollars in his brilliant career and a 4 year old time trial Mark of 155 and two fifths young Jack Moise they have in the bike and he is one of the upcoming top drivers in the business. Karen Morris four for 11 this year and blew out his feel last week with a final half roughly in 57 and three just went by everybody and looked explosive in doing so. He didn't draw very well the outside won't help him but he just kind of flows up with the cover and it might not hurt him too much either We'll see what kind of a horse he is
against the best there is in the business. And with five minutes to go before post time John of course we remember Carol more last year as we were at showplace farms our final New Jersey network harness racing telecast of the 82 season and three of the six in the field for this memorial Paisley our Bruce Cornell Jersey sire's here and that just shows how far the breed has come along here in the Garden State it's getting better and better every year there are hitting in the Meadowlands pace and in the Wilson pace and the breed is really good here. OK. The 15th annual Rob Bruce Cornell pace a year ago under those ideal conditions won by will wipe for a record setting performance 155 and one we take you back it was a record for a four year old on a half mile track. Last year's Cornell featured some of the greatest Pacers in the history of the sporran among them Willow wipers skipped by night gang Eskom Miller Scout Van Hanover and as we pick up the action going down the backstretch skipped by a knight is your
leader but alongside of him is Willow wiper. And indeed it was Willa library who went on to set a world record for four year olds and a half mile track won 55 in one fifth flushed out a fourth just past the quarter mile mark. Willow wiper was outside the rest of the mile and he gamed and skipped by night the whole way and out of twenty seven and for a final quarter gain enough ground to get a half length up on skip by night nearing the wire John Campbell with Ted wing was skipped by Knight these two battle down the lane with a willow wiper just a few steps away from his world record 155 in one performance. Very doubtful we will have a record setting performance with the sloppy conditions we are four minutes away from post camp fella. The three who are still the people's choice at three to five and my bill forward at eight to five the second choice and then it's really a bunch of long shots although the horse that will have the rail Midas out my arse at six to
one can fall of the 1982 harness racing horse of the year Pat Scammell it is with Pat Crowe the driver trainer of camp fella. Thank you Bill of course we all know cam fell of the 1982 horse of the year. Joining me now the driver and trainer of Cam fellow Pat Cuomo and Pat for your efforts last year you won Canada's horsemen of the year. Now what a difference a year is made. One thousand eighty to thirty three starts for camp. Twenty eight wins this year three starts two seconds and one third. What's the big difference then. Well the big difference last year can start at the bottom and work its way up to Sherry's at the top start right off and he hasn't come back quite as good as what he should in 82. Cameron from January right to November without any real break. Now you've had a three month layoff you're coming back in 83. Has the layoff affected cam. Well it's kind of I mean he's not you know can't fall of 1982 that for sure at this point. But he'll come around and maybe take a couple more starts but I think your comeback to
push the horse has been bothered by SNL mosquito me a little bit about those. Well when you're first on the Meadowlands he got sick and he was the transport brought about a product in a car accident 25 hours on the van. He got off that he had a temperature and then he kind of got over that and we got a married race and the next after first starting out attempt on her high the next day and he seemed to be already. Coming back and so I played last year you only lost one race on a half mile this year you've won three qualifiers on the mile track haven't won on the half mile What about today. It's going to be tough. You know off track it's not camp special day but you're going to run for their money. All right thank you very much Pat. Pro driver trainer of camp. Let's go back now to Bill and John. All right thank you Pat camp for coming back in February. One back to back qualifiers in February at the Meadowlands. And what about Pat Croce comments about the track because you did some research going back a few years he has had some success on the last year he had six hits
on sloppy tracks and he won four of them as a matter of fact he took his lifetime mark of 154 and four on an off track at Lexington Kentucky in October during that great meeting down there at the Red Mile One minute to post time. And the odds have dropped to five to one on one horse. Duncan's right at 15 to one camp follower at three to five. The favorite Paulsboro the long shot at 50 to 1. My bill forward at 9 to 5 and Kara Moore at 20 to 1. Incidentally Freddy McDowell the starter has called these horses to the post Harold the driver of the car needs to play an ever so important roles in the in the start of each race. Our race cam in the starters car and perhaps you will be able to hear starter Fred McDowell will listen in.
Race call upcoming by John. Thirty six degrees at Freehold Raceway. A bitter cold April day for the 16th annual Bruce Cornell memorial pace. The purse. Forty thousand dollars. Have a field of six. Field for the memorial to get a movie Up. We'll bring you through with the race call here for you all. That's a recall. All right. That's a recall. Somewhat 2 3 minutes before the start of the race we do have a recall. And Donald Cody. Will have an explanation for us on. The recall. The reasons are are there protecting of course the horseman whose horse involved in the race and of course
protecting the betting public at the horse we have a fair chance of being competitive in the race. And there are several reasons the starter will sound the recall and that is if a horse doesn't come to the gate on stride or if he refuses to come to the gate altogether he's the starter with Demon noncompetitive if he's not close to the gate and there are several reasons a starter can have a recall after the recall not as if horses for all and before the start there's another horse interferes with the horse. Warrior horses broken equipment. Well I got him back in the gate in a hurry before less than two to three minutes before they try to start this race again. John what did you see what brought about that recall. The rail horse was off the gate and so very smartly called a recall. Well they really did get back into the gate very quickly. No stragglers and we were just about set to try it again. That our race cam in the starters car. And the voice you heard
calling for the recall was John and that's John again and he will have to call here at Freehold Raceway for the Cornell memorial place. And they're awfully 60000 you alarm Bruce Cornell memorial Carol always on strike at the start. My bill forward quickly to the. Filing that I have. With cam fell inside get my D cell March 3rd then I like the name Duncan drive for another two by Paul's bottle fed up. And far back. Carol more. Down the backstretch the first time my bill forward laid by a link. Cam fellow second minus Marston third with Duncan Dr. Paul's bar always fifty by the first quarter. 29 for. A ride on the train. Yeah it's my bill forward by like that I have cam fell in second. With my third another two back Duncan drive for. Paulsboro along the rail fifth count on the outside getting back into it sexy as
they come by the stands a first time. Mild bill forward continues to. Camp fellow right there second. Along the rail. Heard the outside. With. A hammer from it the end for. The final time. My bill. Cam fellow right there second third. And. Duncan drives. Trail six corners and it's still my. Cam fellow second at their other three corners one minute 30 seconds the pace is quickening. As my bill for would. Cam. Around the final third as the field turns. My bill forward leads a campfire swings the outside to challenge. With my SO Marston third.
Rail. Here comes cam. Cam. The two favorites battling through out on top and just beautifully last time a remarkable mile incidentally 159 and three fifths the last fifty eight and on this racetrack cam doesn't mind an off track all that much. Incidentally it was pretty close for a second might have gotten there for the play. He might have gotten there. Carol more breaking at the top.
Got back into the hunt but really throughout it was a battle between the two that we expected leading it fell a second my third pick up the action 130 to the three quarters and my bill forward is still about another two and a half back and third care more now from fourth and he had a long ground there and has a turn for home and cam out a second and now driving for Pat. It is still my bill forward midway down the stretch leading the way but Cam has his sights on the leader and is just about to go on by the sew up the wind with my bill now second a late charge by MIKE HURST but it is all cam at the wire and Midas our mothers did get. My bill forward until the stretch. Fading to third. Duncan's right was fourth
the price is. Camp. 340 to win 280. And 210. Hurst $4 to place and two twenty to show and my bill forward. To 10. To show. Exactly. Everyone paying $13 and 80 cents. And of course for Campell it adds another $20000 to his claw for its first win of the year actually in parimutuel racing. And we've got thirty nine thousand two hundred for the year. Many now braving the elements here at Freehold Raceway. In the victory circle. All right thank you very much Bill Perry Pat Crow the winning driver packing graduations first win in 1983 and what a great finish. Yeah super It's really good. So he's on his way now to get over the hump get that first victory in
1983. Just coming back now to where you used to be Michael cam talent and I know. You came around the first half mile. You look behind you to see who was there was that a factor what was going on at that point that I seen the horse I was calm and I didn't really think long and hard face and I thought wow I considered for for quite a way. When they started my exam or sort of a back which I kind of don't know Patterson's we also have a clear shot of ahead of me. Last last weekend of course cantle got hung out on a great trip but was. Parked almost always not not the story today. Oh it was off to get better today. More like most OUR was a track a big factor Pat Brown all track is good for all the way to track a supernova. All right thank you very much for the winning driver cam Phillips Let's go back inside now to Bill Perry and John Barry. All right thank you Pat Jana really is a tribute to the folks here at Freehold Raceway despite the miserable day. You heard Pat Crow say the track was not bad. Well I'll tell you Ed Wright has a track superintendent here.
These horsemen have their hats off to him every day of every meeting of the year he's a great superintendent.
