By everyone I declare news we have near perfect weather conditions with a tent at the Jersey Shore Marrus on clear weather 50 degrees and no waiting time should be good. But the times are not the entire story of a marathon Those are the marathon features people. Why does the story of 3000 of them in this way when they come in all shapes and sizes at all ages. Why do they do it. Why do they call themselves against 26 miles 385 yards. Well we hope to capture that story for you. And helping us will be to marathoners they will be out on the course reporting to us through our. First step is to make a movie will be out running with. The field and his reports should be rather interesting. Also helping us. The world. Has a higher authority. Time for one. Dollar. Play stuck in Boston. It was one of those ways a couple of times a. Year. Should be a very interesting race with some very interesting but it's. Not good. This time for his opening Rick. Thank you. For starting on your jersey shore. Is Back. Because.
People start to feel the anticipation after the race. It's 26 miles a long way but people don't know what to do with their energy in the first. Few minutes before the going goes off we have a man or a stage I'm a clone we will be following him along of course keeping track of what other people in the race will be moving around strategically different points in the race. So we got to Mrs. Tyler a lot of nervousness right here in the front line at this point you can't wait for the race that's all you think I just got the gun going off the motor. Feeling. Kind of nervous in my stomach at this time. I feel good spiritual aspect of this is important. I guess you can compare it with your fellows Excel so you
really need to get on the road and get away from this mess for three hours or so and have a good run with the people. He runs in his own people. Well it's a labor of love really. We've been doing it we've been staging this marathon for since the beginning. When we when we start actually planning it. And it was a real small race at the time the first race we had a hundred ten people in it. But it's grown to be a large race it's a very well-known race. We work hard for one main reason and. Truly as a people to keep it the way it was intended doesn't really change. We've tried to do that. People want to change the race and we don't want to change.
Seconds away from the starting gun. Runners are lined up here according to the front line up in the front along with the back to back your package. It's time now for the starting gun. You're. Runners are running at the starting line along the track toward Long
Branch. It's right here that everybody tries to avoid getting sucked up in the mob scene. There's a tendency to start too fast. Everybody has a game plan and while they spread out here to get over we are struggling with their individual game plan plan and hopefully will be locked in on automatic and not be disturbed. That's the strategy right here. You stabilize your logical systems and hit racing pace. The game plan that will carry them through the 26 mile. Once on target they can proceed comfortably for a while but you can see how easy it is to get swept up by the best the face. Gets sucked into a race plan that isn't to your liking. After a lot of these people. Trained alone and suddenly here they are running with a hundred. At this point the runners head along the beach and out of Asbury Park. Here you had a huge back and. For the most part that's going to get the feel of the race. Finding their pace.
Others are still struggling to discover those feelings. They're tough to deal with all those sensory perception you flouncing around in your head. I suppose that somewhere up the road everybody will start to entertain. Us. But that's not so much the problem now is just getting underway and settling down for the long run. The North Fork bends here to the left. Pack leaders run followed by a very. Trying. Time. Runners in about 20 minutes. On the back of the pack with. Five hours. Around the bend. Here's the
last year's winner. Allen her. Second here two years ago. Talk about a day 31 years old from Johnstown Pennsylvania. Ben's around North Long Branch. Looks like a good pace. There is no wind which can be a tremendous factor. Those off the Atlantic Ocean Presently the conditions are ideal. Great weather for the summer in the northeast. Around the lake with everybody feeling frisky. People are all by home and live. Out there on the road to Long Branch is world class marathon of what's happening out there pick it up from the point where you are. OK with the one point during the course it's a very interesting point because whether you're running two hours and 15 minutes or running for hours and 15 minutes. Going to most
people by you're just waiting for them one mile split as they come by we'll be able to get some idea about what pace they're running in the beginning the most important aspect will be to settle in to your desired pace and just try to relax because you have 25 miles to go. But coming now. I'm just kind of a stay totally stay out of the running about 312 marathon which is kind of fast. Forever Beautiful running absolutely perfect of course just ideal for a fast time. Nice time for that report for the 1 mile point this is probably the best place to quickly splain what this course looks like graphically. You can see that it's a. Back porch which means the others leave a park and head up that long stretch. Or if there's a turnaround point along right and then back down take the next word of course these are two way traffic to one side just as required to
run or swim right. One's going to tell the take the rail and indented loop using turn and then back with your back up the convention hall for the start finish line which now is the halfway point line. Those runners must run the circuit again heading back up the Long Branch a second time back again. Employees 13 miles along the way there are plenty of meat stations a water station. That's what the Course looks like now let's go back in time plumbing at the 3.5 mile mark on that northern stretch the Long Branch time. Killing our three and a half mile point was just one by leaving the state there from Allegheny in second place with Chris Lloyd. With him. Are sure they're right. Arius area writers who sure as you see the pack just went by we packed consisted of about. 12 to 15 people. When conditions are still ideal.
Next up let's find out where our man in the race to me. Is. Point when he's off to do the job he running on somewhere on your front. Coming to him What's your problem. It's about 21 minutes into. An hour. Everything to their face. To think about how am I going to get there. Whether through the absolute preference recorded by like Jackass or not. Because it's about the four mile mark. Ok past four miles now running about 540 pace I gots. Were running about twenty fifth. Twenty sixth place to other people here handing out water. I think the smart rider of today for three lots of fluid early. Will get this one that I'm back. You know overheat everybody. And. Something is not right in taking on. The summit of.
The camaraderie of. Christmas. Going off for a while that their. Flights are 33. Be without. A leader is Steve although our running very smooth. As he heads up through Alan Hurst through the john to deal with all the running tour the turnaround point in Long Branch mall are as like a classic marathon build up very slight build great speed unperturbed luck it's hard to know what's in his head at this point. Let's talk shoes for a moment. John Fleming How about a quick rundown of the importance of the right shoes and who wears white shoes in a race like this one. Just a day like today 50 or 60 different types of training shares the
training ship was assured of Percy's in all the time on when he's training on the roads and you'll see some variations of racing she as usual later wait she'll strip down very very light made for speed running rejoin people out they will be wearing a trainee flag becomes a very personal thing. My selection of shoes you see depends on the kind of course that I'm running on. If I'm running on a flat course I can wear lightweight you're running on a hill your course I may desire to have more padding again very personal and you'll see many many different types of trees out there today. Like why did. I tell her not to. Be a tough first or a point. Really can't wait to think when you know you're a quarter of the way and. Then idea when you're asked. To change to make you know that they're. Going to sing the. Lyrics come back this way pretty soon. I don't think you. Gotta wonder if I. Got home at. Last one of the front by now. I don't think I can go into that.
But then again lesser known of a great home or. Whether or not. The Jersey Shore of this actually. There's no what I said I thought were. Really boring. But talk about breath and Heartbreak Hill. And I was actually trying to really. Break a fraternity and. Get their arms up on that north. Korea got nothing. So the changes are important. I mean I forgot the US and. Some here thought I thought I. Was good for him but trying. To make his hanging tough things always Steve Omar's Steve is in the groove apparently and you know is it the turn around point in Long Branch which means he now heads down course back toward the report. Don Fleming you're the turn around time. The first point. Just passed. Steve.
We have inferred a 50 100 yard lead fourth place is coming Chris. That. Becomes. A show. Coming up for people on the back it looks like they're running about five. At this particular time. With him is to marry another race favorite the writing really really good race right now. I'm in the race to McLuhan I started out as a playboy she'll be coming to Long Branch this
time running along with the meat packing. Jim can you hear me. Welcome to the. First turnaround. With a great flick what they were really. Great at doing that are back for. Your one for the other. That's a lot of red back. And back into the glad the sun is not a fun. Thing. So get off. My watch. Let's. Get right. Back. Yeah everybody's got something to say. Then the race proceeds nicely with stable art in the lead pursued by Cliff Whitehead. We want to again mention that this race is known as the
people's race. No appearance money is paid to big stars to show up for a store show of the run. If they want to they get no front money. So really the story of this race is a bunch of stories. Everybody has a story in one such story about a guy who raises roses for a living. Races on with one console is one of those writers who is out there trying to improve his personal best time. We caught up with him a few days ago the Freehold Raceway where he races danger breads and we talked about how he got into running how it all came about. That's true and a half years ago and in that year we break at the farm and your kind have to run alongside of them when you start. And I rose right alongside of a call for about a quarter of a mile and I was rudely out of breath and tired out so I decided to do something about my condition and I started jogging. Maybe you know half a mile and I worked up to where if I start jogging or some other fellows all we got a five mile race just continue to train in Philadelphia
and try to marathon I tried to marathon last year Jersey Shore and completed it. If you miss a couple of days you start to feel bad about it like you did something wrong and you kind of you enjoy doing it you want to do it. It's not like you know when you start out it's like a punishment. And it's hard and after a while you really want to do it and I think it's really needed. I lost I lost about 20 pounds and my physical condition and become better I think I've become more aware of myself. I finished last year and for hours it was the first marathon I probably felt as good as the guy I didn't want to. Console him running and racing is a way of life pushes on and a Jersey Shore marathon hoping to better record. Our. Race rolls on and along that stretch of ocean avenue that goes up in the back from Long Branch there is two way traffic diversion of sorts with runners we vote here where they can see the other contestants and find out who was where in the race with the
loneliness of the long distance runner for the moment the leaders all Morricone by kids on wide circle races along like a machine legs pumping. In that on the turf war. What. Does a. Runner think about take you in a race like this one. Has a good lead over to the white man and there's nobody around. Certainly there is the anticipation of who's back here and how they might be playing a waiting game right now Molnar. Looks to strong. John. Time and miles back down to do you running with Allen Chief John Newman who has an interesting story. First question I ask you Are you really not doing more than just a person you're directing traffic. I think you're a fan of marathoning when explained during the course. Yes. Appreciate the work that they do to come to this point today. Being a runner myself I appreciate what they can do and I'm
supervising directing traffic. But to be the number. We're coming and. We're going to pass convention hall. We have to go south and come back to. The tough now. But in the right is going to come back on the other side of it. I think the better you go over there I guess we're one and a half and this is where. A lot of people come into the halfway point really questioning whether they want to keep going. Very tough when you have to look of course it's tough enough when you're going out.
But when you go by the first thing to do. Knew it had to be exact about two or three coming and looking at a very interesting figure as it approached this point it's almost kind of ironic. It's a clown's face and it's run as if you were going to look at this building and head over to the halfway point which is very essential. Because the trauma coming up the smiling face of the house and there's
a. Message. That's right if. I don't hit. Send In The Clowns. QUESTION If there's a cloud over. My head the second 24 might have a funny feeling it's Miles that's right. We will mention the role the female runner plays in a marathon in this race there are over 300 women but dissipating one of them is presently going past chief Newman at the point where Ocean Avenue breaks off onto other streets streets that send the runners on a looping course through aspirate Park rather unmentioned is characterize a boom home wife of last year's men's winner Greg Hall. Garrison talked about as a potential wins when. He won the Rochester marathon twice placed in Boston. And works for victory here but
there's a problem for Gary in this race she has a cold is not feeling well and as a result on a loop back to the halfway point back of the store finish line. Will have to drop out. It's your sex marathon run and the first time she's had to quit the honor of being the first female across the finish line will be left to someone else back there on the course. It's important to emphasize the role of women in raising their numbers are growing significantly and with that growth is tremendous performance in time we will get back to the women a little later on. Because at. Home. You have to wait for another time and another marathon. At the halfway point now. The end of the loop that spans the carousel in Asbury Park and back on Ocean Avenue comes our leader Steve on our own or continues to grind it out moving smoothly up the straightaway to get his halfway time with Whitehead is running second at this point about 200 yards back in the clip is going to go on or sleep. He's got to do it approximately here. Omar moves
on the halfway point and here is time running. He's there to report on it. Tom. Was directed to a point right now Steve is coming through as you see. One. Is 7 to 14 for the marathon. That's an excellent pace. Very very good time coming back to second place as Cliff Floyd did from the sure area also is on a very good pace. Race field is coming to the halfway point now and it is here that everybody considers the pace and time at which they're running this race for instance Wal-Mart passed by here a one hour seven seconds and that means that if you can keep up that pace it's quite possible he could break 272 that's Craig Holmes record set here last year. Buddy pretty much is going to have to keep that pace. He looks good but it's going to be very tough to
do our man in the race. In the gloom he's been out there running through the first 13 miles of this race and it's been mighty tough running along and talking to all those people now. We are going to pull 10 from the race and the reason we're going to pull him from the race right now is so we can insert him here and there throughout the field so he can keep giving you all those real good race impressions that he's been doing so well he's been doing a great job. Still they keep coming across a halfway point here. All shapes sizes all ages dressed in all kinds of clothing some people dressed very warm some dressed lightly. And we'd like to pick up again on the theme of the People's Marathon. There are two people running today with a very interesting story. Jenny and Bill failing or a husband and wife team from Colts Neck New Jersey and they are running in their very very first marathon today. And how did it all start for them marathon running while we visited them a few days before this race. I think you've got to go back.
When you really want to do something other than sit around. Better running for running. We ran a half mile. And I thought we'd run for. 10 years. I've been in about seven years. We were very worried about the. World but I was not going to run there. I was not going to run a marathon every two or three weeks time with a something like a marathon and I prayed not me. I guess for me at that it had become because I still wasn't going to run it as recently as September. I think I'd like to know if I can do it. I'm going to graduate cover now that kind of a long term thing. And I very much like that graduate program. Doing the training on a daily basis doing the work on a daily basis. I mean I guess I'm going to find out about myself discovered.
As an English teacher. Doing fine. Let's see. The new women's leader is harming your. Partner. Helping her make you hard to know your. Thoughts on this one are. People rushing. From Nancy. What's the price you have to run in a half marathon OK. Are you nervous about this about going the entire distance. What's
the fathers you've been running and training lately. About Is your family here to watch your own today. He has added time to think he's going to run today. How about yourself what he aiming for. For 30 That's pretty ambitious. Are they worried about your running the race will you have any family discussions to figure out whether you should do it Annette. OK well I'm sure there are a good job they will look for on the course later on. Good luck. As you know Nancy it's the turnaround in Long Branch thirty years the question still lingers in the mind. Is it necessary for a 10 year old to run on distance or are we boarding our youngsters in the specialized boys at too young an age. Will Nancy Fox turn her back on this kind of support when she's 17. It's an interesting debate and is being discussed is a great deal. Nancy doesn't seem
to be any less where and as long as he seizes upon that it's probably OK. There has been talk of setting age limits for long distance raises. 21 miles if you can keep. Going for the final turn a crucial time in the race
pretty much running the people in the street fluids drink. Stations are going out and coming back because everyone is tired. In the. 21 to 19.
Down here in second place I think we are behind the leader of 70 seconds how do you feel like you know what kind of place you think you're running on. Until. You know the later the theme Omar. Yeah he looks good. I don't there's anybody behind you getting any word on whether the third and fourth are about laughter is going to create hope that you are going off. OK if you feel at this point
I'm paid to figure you out and I thought of good writers and second he says something about the 3 percent of you look like you've got him by about a minute nobody mention your name coming into the utility to run me right. Yeah I got to set the record together I think I might not. Have all the chords or hundreds of letters to sing. Finishing well. My time with the People's Marathon people struggling against 26 miles of 385 yards struggling against brains is no way to stop running struggling people on somebody's back in the pack
running 24 on 1 1/2 points. It's about warning of miles to go is about twenty four and a half miles. He's got a very big lead an excellent time for you to try to do now is just hold it all together and bring it in as strongly as possible. He is relaxed. He knows pretty much at this point he's going to win. But the main thing is to get there and I'm sure that's the most important thing right at this particular time Steven all are going to have to go through it but I feel like it's about to. Tell me that's the biggest thing you've won this. Race. But.
I guess TV history where else are the front runners been interviewed as he sprints to the line. Instead of a difference of may have been a food stamp was the ball more as wrestled with the loneliness and pressure of the number one all through the race. He's probably tired of hearing his own mind repeated repetitious messages. Oh more from Johnstown Pennsylvania. Thirty one year old marathoners is all alone in front on even a similar challenge. Doing closed one. Eye without unperturbed morning wind. Reading is going to be wearing a shirt right now. Yeah you said it.
It's pretty much from start to finish. Congratulations. OK here's the big question.
Number two miles from the finish she kept her company you probably understand. Run along with her it's obvious she will be the first woman. Do you remember the first time I fell in. Yeah like Field of everything the weather the perfect area. Everything with her the water you're going to go to get a better day probably make a living from her. Thank you for. That move. What kind of time you're on even if your first were looking pretty. Good on your. Bathroom from that would be coming from I even got trying to get the word
out about a. Product. Or person. How to get. There. Yeah yeah. You behind you with I guess a mile behind it or around here for the crown right. OK good that I'm with you later. Did you ever try to tell when Steve any part of the race you were close enough you could see him. I got pretty doggy at the end. Jeffrey thought of to catch you maybe at the last few miles. Yeah I was hoping to catch him at the top ally 22 23 of Atlanta with us to struggle to get in so you know it's a matter of bringing an end that I was hoping to catch on now but ok. The 25 miles I feel free I don't. Think of anything but time to get into it for about 335 three for your good.
I defend the right of the other so that's if you look at your more just below with the sonograms one how can one since you're starting. Running about a minute mile pace that would pretty much figure. Testing I run. Like this. That's the way. Forward for the. Man finally looking strong and coming up straight away from the carousel when his mind is not. Formally running with George Will and you're on the left of your screen one of the many knows your first woman across picking it up from the piano. What. Do. You want a little
tentative about this neighborhood about a mile I have to go. You feel better about it. Well I think. It. Has your fist in the hole what you had to do. Right. Down. To. The Border. Yeah he was holding as if you're a terrific. So if you try to graduate in the. Top of the Florida. Route you look really good I've got a national report of the 25 mile mark of the gun this last year at. The threat level. Standing there with Mao and harming those women's division winner on Tuesday for 22
that is a PR moment he feels. That it is the first time I rode three hours I really don't feel anything right now I feel that a few days I'm sure it's one of the great things about winning is you never feel pain. What was your biggest marathon prior to this New York City Marathon three hours and 12 seconds. So you're making improvements of almost 20 20 minutes per race. How can you answer for that what's what's the reason. Oh I don't work I wish I had started earlier instead of starting when I was 33 years old. I want even running it only two years in January. What improvement I think you have to be looking for even bigger and better times is what's on your mind now even before you think you had it all. Go down by just maybe a little bit 250. Very modest like to say and I do this and I do it. It's a good attitude. Congratulations remain a great race. You very much. What we need again was 24 miles higher for my drill total
to fill it out of the political. SCENE IN THREE during the last hour we were together for oh about 15 miles to about 42 miles and she got real cold thoughtful and of course the Iraqi police car came right so they got a bad attitude that allows her to be very disappointed on what you're going to make us all very proud of her so you know she's a trooper killer and I love you and I both he and I are going to get your list in there. His great wealth manager Brady from going that way. Still others continue to cross for one
reason or another. Many have run to better personal records while some have run to meet the qualifying standards for Boston in the spring. It simply has been a lot of little races within the big race. No other sport attracts people of so great a spectrum of abilities. Winning a private race for a few. Possibly the game plan expert medical assistance. OK I feel really good obviously and I'm going to go for it I'm going to finish you're wired for all of us. I view America as being nice is about my trust with it you got it and you know how to post a note to their interest every fast because of the weather. I'm good as I was going through and I'm pretty good so I was really happy when I got a right to travel. Everyone that you are the troll Robb on 24th whatever
you know. For some I thought that other would just testify for I got about 2 miles to go. By letting him forget it and write I'm going to write I walk a little. Yeah okay physically. Oh yes I'm alright will fire up your growth. OK. I will go into. Genuinely wasn't always funny. Now Jenny moved toward the finish line and I think I detect the smile. Smile that says I made it. I finished my first. I was apprehensive of finishing as Manuel and certainly was back again. Writers is just one accomplishment of many in this race. All those personal stories of why someone started running in the first place or spelled out here.
Did exceptionally well for the first time in fact like a lot of athletes who established person like Ruth Ginny will probably not accept this war torn from this day forth and now has a personal standard and she will chase that standard in future man crimes because. The Britishers. Continue the boring now. Race is over for them and they slowly walk behind convention all of them actually inside to the auditorium where they can rest a bit get a drink and talk with their family and friends about what a great race it was. Oh they look great and tired. There is that great personal gratification that comes with athletic accomplishment they have beaten the course they have won the race. They are all marathoners. Everyone. Decides to walk about two miles to go walking on jogging walking or jogging two blocks walking one block. It's great then coming off of a cold I still feel great. I know lots of the best runners are stopped the route to
various times and it's a real do it one time or other. The Japanese particular physical problems that caused the race everything was well run as usual. Yeah that was like that and I didn't have the fatal flaw to say the fatal four is right that we are through. I did the first 5 in about 44. 44. But for me it's too fast for me or if it was the weather that made you I just it was so nice and great it was very well run through if it were reversed me to you know. How many marathons of your own is the first very first run for first or you're going to make up for us live thank everybody weather go. You're running with anyone
and. Everybody has to start a job. You know you just gotta hold on just. To just push it. There's a lot of people back here at this time that are working but I know the two of you are walking intentionally and even race walking for a long time. That's great. Let me tell you is that easy to keep up with you and I got to go you do it OK. Are
you from New York club. OK. Have you done many marathons before. Oh yes it's my turn to see you this year. That's terrific. Do you run it out I'm worried just for three years with injuries don't tend in a setting up 20 miles or so. Race walking you come down about 1 1/2 times a way compared to the full time Joy Ride you noticed this limp right there. So you don't get that 10:00 tonight as soon as you do. That it's only with. You. You know. That's great. What kind of pace do you walk out for miles. You do about a tenth life of a marathon. Take it easy today. Like that. I just haven't done anything since then. You can do that many marathons and because of the less stress on your body it's rather much of a factor
your recovery. Like where you feel like tomorrow. I'm going to dislike both of you with us right. Now. And. And. The People's Marathon is history. Steve Molinari the winner and he's the guy who
said well I really didn't come to win but I felt so good. Tom Fleming Wednesday can't cross the finish line first thing he said was no one's going to take it out so I took it at the mile and he did and he said the weather was on my side and I think we just about he knew he was going to win and that's the extra key I guess he had to McClure. You've got some action today. I spent most of my time with the people in the so-called middle and back of the pack and I was very impressed with the fact that they seem to be very happy in their own world they're running all that slower say than Steve Molnar but they're perfectly content back there and having a good time amazingly enough. And although our commentary is over the race is not. There is still coming across that finish line. Sports America is a production of the Pacific work sports consortium.
