A. A federal appeals court has temporarily stopped in Monday's draft to sign up. In sports boxing from Ice World New Jersey Open golf and basketball's Edgar Jones and the party's over in Detroit. The Nightly News with Karen Stone and Bill Perry was scorch. That evening. A federal appeals court in Philadelphia has ruled that selective service registration scheduled to begin Monday is unconstitutional. A panel of three judges said the law excludes the registration of women and therefore violates the Constitution. As a result Monday's scheduled sign up with some four million young men is in doubt. The federal government is planning an appeal. Phelps logons reports the latest word from Washington is that the Justice Department is frantically preparing an appeal to the Supreme Court asking for a stay in the appeals court's ruling.
A successful appeal would allow the registration to start on Monday as originally planned. It was not to be a draft just registration no examinations no classification just a name address and Social Security number filled out on a form at your local post office. Even so members of the New Jersey coalition against registration and the draft were on the campus of Montclair State College today spreading around leaflets the government's plan was to register men born in 1960 next week. Those born in 1961 the following week then next January men born in 1962 would register in years after that men would register as they turn 18. Generally the registration has been viewed as a political ploy by President Carter signing up a possible military force without going so far as a draft especially given this is an election year. But members of the coalition believe the draft would be just around the corner think the politics of the draft is extremely important.
We think registration is being set up. As the first step for the draft and the draft is going to be the first step towards pursuing a new intervention every policy around the world and we want to try to make young people aware that this is just what it's all about and that is something is going to impinge on their lives in the same way that you have then please them the lives of the young people of the 60s. Even if the Justice Department is successful and registration starts Monday the appeals court's ruling that it is unconstitutional should provide a handle for anti registration groups especially the American Civil Liberties Union to continue the battle with new energy. Either way whether it starts on Monday or not the issue of registration and its sexual bias would appear to be lodged in the courts for some time. I'm Philip Hawkins the party's over for the delegates to the Republican National Convention. Last night Detroit George Bush officially joined the ticket. Ronald Reagan gave his acceptance speech and convention there celebrated what they feel is a great chance for
victory in November. Now remember also has reports on the GOP optimism and the man responsible for that optimism. Ronald Reagan used to make his living acting in Grade B movies. He played the all-American boy full of earnest sentiment Well ways got the girl last night in his acceptance speech he played the same role. This time he got the convention with millions of immigrants from everyone earlier in the week here in search of freedom. Some say that they're making that seem right. We slept in the big city small town and it never gets to where you are willing to do whatever and talk about family freedom self-reliance boundless American optimism and the restoration of the old values and New Jersey Republicans who know him or met with him personally this week
say he really believes it all he really does mean all those things he said about trusting the people. He's very warm. And you can. See he was very warm very receptive. He went through the crowd. He talked to people on a one to one Reagan spouts right wing conservative philosophy but in his eight years as governor of California he showed himself to be surprisingly moderate. Jeffrey Bell who worked in Reagan's last presidential campaign says Reagan evolved into a conservative during that time he was the first governor who put a tax limitation measure on the ballot Proposition 1 in 1973. Even though it lost it led to the whole tax limitation and tax reduction movement in the 50 states after that. But Essex County chairman John Renna says Reagan's not the right winger he's perceived to be. Well I think it's conservative but I think the public is trying to perceive them as being a real right winger and he isn't. He's a conservative with a moderate leaning New Jersey delegation is pleased with Reagan.
Pleased with the man himself pleased by the choice of George Bush's V.P. and the national Republican organization will be targeting New Jersey as a key state. It will be looking for support in some unexpected places like Hudson County. The organization thinks Reagan will play well with the ethnic and blue collar vote the hard working people. Reagan touches I Mary MRO said one person who probably got almost as much attention as Ronald Reagan did at the convention was Bill. Here's a look at the man behind the elephant mask. He spent about $600 on Hispanics and it paid off immediately to make money and still got his face on TV screens and front pages than the country. And the world. Guys we have channeled. I'll give you an example 2. 5. 7 9. Out of New York. I have your TV stations of. 3 6 10 and your station which is 12 down in our area public
TV. I've been interviewed by the Brazilians the English the French the Italians the Canadians. We went as far as Japan and just being very you know delicious forty nine and it was something I wanted to tell and I love letters. Sure. Also Cape May county's Treasurer and chairman of Cape May County Republican organizations and a good sport. You know. It was funny. The Detroit CBS local TV station nominated me believe it or not for vice president as a joke because I got so much good publicity. But you know it's a lot of fun you know these conventions are great they are tiring and you can have a little fun with it. And it does you know it's the American way of life that kind of odd questions that people ask. I don't kinds of questions I don't want a reporter you know say to me Do I like fish. I said What's this got to do about electing a president. There were five times as many media people as delegates at this convention. Phil may have met them all. And the phenomenon of Phil raises one weighty philosophical question who is the bigger fool.
He who plays the fool or he who records him. I Mariama Rosso. And Mary has returned from her week in Detroit we're going to take a little conventional wisdom from her. Mary even later this week David Norcross the state Republican chairman was expressing a dismay with the platform that was adopted earlier this week is that going to be tough now for those New Jersey delegates to come back to the state and campaign for Ronald Reagan in that plot. Well I think that everybody's going to try to move away from the platform and whatever dissension there was at the convention the Republicans in charge tried to tamp down keep it down. The platform is not acceptable to many New Jerseyans But Ronald Reagan has also seemed to move to a more moderate position. On women's issues and so I think they'll just ignore. It. They've also said that jersey is a key state for the Republicans now as well as for the Democrats. What are they planning. Well Reagan is supposed to be in four to six times before
Election Day. And they've been talking about some canvassing that they're going to do door to door across the country as well. Thank you rest up. Hard to wish has been approved for students at state and county colleges Rutgers University and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The increases range from 8 to 13 percent. At the same time the State Board of Higher Education today approved its new to wish and grant program for the coming school year more tuition aid will be shifted to low income families adding strains to middle income families. State officials say they don't know what is causing the fumes but they say it is not chemical controlled. It's not coming from the chemical control site that's definite We don't have anything left on the site that would produce hydrogen sulfide odors plus the wind is not conducive to taking in that direction. The wind yesterday and today was blowing in an easterly direction which ruled out chemical control but upwind of the companies where the employees got sick or three chemical companies a sewage

There is conflict and turmoil again at Essex County College in Newark. This time it began with a New Jersey Nightly News interview aired last week. It's just the most recent in a long string of power struggles and disputes but it could topple the school sixth president after only two months on the job. SANDRA KING reports.
It was this interview that brought the schools behind the scenes squabbles in front of the cameras and remarks like these that heightened the controversy in the board process on not allowing some of those changes to take place. And definitely I would want to preside over the institution that is going to go down later. Adrian Davis who chairs the trustee board apparently phone Dr. Yaba in protest. He then took offense and wrote her a strongly worded letter. But the fight reached the flashpoint Wednesday night when you read that letter to a crowd of several hundred at the school. In it he accused Davis of arrogance charging she attempted to push him around and intimidate him to censor his speech and activities. Today she denied those charges but made some of her own calling Jambos letter irresponsible and blasting him for going public. We had assumed that we were beyond that kind of attack. We were moving forward. There are certain issues that we've got to deal with middle state's fiscal problems a curriculum student enrollment. Those are the kinds of things that we are
hoping and that we were hoping that we could focus on. But they weren't the kinds of things he was focusing on obviously Middle States is the association that evaluates colleges and rules on their accreditation. It's been highly critical of Essex and has deferred any action to accreditation the dismissal of yet another president. The schools six could further weaken its case for credentials and that's not all. If Dr. Yamma is fired the faculty Association says it will call a general strike in protest and in the mean time Yama is fighting for his job and making still more charges. I think the real basis is the inability to accept somebody who is going to be dealing with real issues somebody who refuses to be pushed over somebody who has strengths in his convictions. But for now the real issue is Will Davis seek to dump Yama. She says she is
considering and will decide by Wednesday night's board meeting in Newark. I'm Sandra King. That special Thomas's English muffin with all those nooks and crannies is being toasted. Tomorrow on it's 1 100th anniversary in America it was a century ago that Samuel Beth Thomas moved from England opened a bakery in New York and began peddling the muffins created from a family recipe. The plant moved to total one position County in 1962. SB Thomas employees will be celebrating that anniversary with a giant party on the plant's grounds tomorrow. And even after 100 years the famous English muffin recipe is still a big secret. But that's apparently because Thomas's promises to keep their success behind those nooks and crannies. Camden have a good weekend. A retired geography professor from Glassboro State College made modern nautical history today. He crossed the Atlantic Ocean without using any navigational devices. So in these last reports Marvin Kremer got a hero's welcome this morning as he sailed into a marina in Atlantic City. From here three months ago on his 39 foot sloop nav star determined to make the first modern day round trip of the Atlantic without any instruments the crew relied solely on the wave sun and stars. Surrounded by a flotilla of yachts Coast Guard fire boats helicopters and small planes waving welcome signs. The former Glassboro state geography professor showed little signs of fatigue. He was obviously elated by his navigational feat creamer and his three man crew missed their first two destinations the A zorse in the Cape Verde Islands due to rough seas but undaunted they made it to the African nation of Senegal on May 20th. And it was pretty much smooth sailing the rest of the way.
The eight thousand mile voyage took ninety two days and with pinpoint accuracy they reached Bermuda two weeks ago then headed for home. Today a large crowd of well-wishers greeted the now famous sailors dock side as a coast guard band serenaded them. Right Captain creamer got a special welcome. The ice cream sundae he requested upon his return sealed with a big kiss from his wife after acknowledging the sweet taste of victory. Kremer said he felt he'd proven what he set out to do here is that the method is successful over a lot of data. The Coast Guard location data with our location data but. It appears that we were able to find our targets fairly well as a success. As for future nautical adventures Cremer plans to sail around the world in a year or so. That is if Mrs. Cremer gets her OK. My liking the postponed his round the world for a while when he heard I want to take me on the boat going shorter cruises. None of this.
Small Talk down there either in Atlantic City.
