New Jersey Nightly News; Political Convention Delegation Meeting Tape #4

- Transcript
My. Great fortune and I don't know how many but they certainly are. You want to get something right. All right. It is my understanding from discussing it with them this morning. So that in the event this question was asked I couldn't answer. I think what is the most up to date information on the subject. Is that the pro-bowlers of Jack via the Resolutions Committee at the start. They would not be able to effect a change in either the rights amendment. Lying on the floor of the convention.
Understanding that in all probability particularly with respect to one of our members on that committee. Has been involved in that effort and it's my understanding that she will be a part of that meeting. There is not at this time I. Don't know there are replaced.
To get around your neck. Yes that's true. OK. We we were under the impression that a couple of other women delegates were going to make a fuss in this caucus about the planks in the platform regarding women why did you decide not to. I think the important emphasis is to try and get those planks out of the platform here. Just our ability to negotiate to get 26 or 27 members whatever necessary on the platform committee on the platform
committee that is there. We don't think it's possible we're still trying. But. This is about the abortion plank should not be part of the Constitution. At least their own logic in this issue. The abortion issue or a right to life as a constitutional amendment. That's what they're asking for in the platform. We think we have a better chance of getting the 26 members there at this point we're trying to do it as reasonably as possible. What happens if you can't convince the committee will there be a floor fight. I happen to be and I am. I am not one of the delegates so I will not have a chance to do anything on it and I don't know yet whether anyone will. But I think the best approach and approach of the party is to say we're going to work through
the platform committee if at all possible. OK this is just for the purposes of it. Yes it is very definitely civil. Well. I've done a lot of research. It's just like anything else. The door to door. Meetings anything possible if there is a summary of the players will be going back to that sense I get that. Just raising the money to get my message across and spending as much time meeting all the people. I thought you and the few other women delegates in the New Jersey delegation would make a fuss in this meeting about the plank in the abortion amendment plank in the Republican platform you did not. Well I have no doubt that some of the women in the New Jersey delegation.
Would like the movement to be furthered. But so far as I'm concerned there's a delegate from New Jersey that worked on the platform committee. The abortion issue is dead. There's no way that we can change it. We we we realize is the way it came about. I think that's an unfortunate you got a plank in there. It is unfortunate but. It's just something that it's been what the expression signed sealed and delivered. And as there is no input there is no way you can to change that abortion and absolutely not have a theory. We're making a concerted effort with Governor Reagan to. See if we can get some of the language changed.
Our main point is that we want to impress upon him the importance of how he is going to address. His States during the campaign in the northeast section of this country. If we were able to get across to him the important change in language we're not saying throughout the platform we're saying clean up the language of it. Maybe just maybe we might not have lost. In November. But as I see it now. And with all the furor going on back at home which I know it has because I received telephone calls from home. I think Reagan stands a chance of losing because of his past lewdly and women that when they're on this committee that voted against. I also feel the same way if you can't convince the platform committee you are a member to to change things and you seem to think you can't.
What about a floor fight. We. Stop short of doing that number one we had to have 25 percent of the delegation on the platform committee in order to do this and we knew that the signatures were not there. So it's it is a lost cause Pretty much unless you can get Reagan to soften it a little. That's right. That's that's what we're hoping with. We're going to be able to get him to do. OK. And let's hope the female gender. Will have an impression upon him to do so. OK. OK. Just stand for two shot. OK this is just one of our shots for editing purposes only takes just a minute. OK. One two three four five and you can say the same thing. One two three four five. OK.
