Description
Episode Description
"The Hastings family has been farming in East Bethel, Maine for over 200 years. Sometime in the near future Sonny and Betty Ann will turn the farm over to the one son who returned to Maine from the buzz of the city. The son, Jay, joined the hundreds of Maine's young people who leave the state each year in search of more lucrative jobs elsewhere. Now he has decided the farm is too precious for his family to lose. He is back home, attempting to work side by side with his father. Ninety-three year old Grandma 'Moo-Cow' doesn't much like the idea of Jay sacrificing his life for the farm. It has always been a challenge to keep the farm from becoming the center of their lives. She fears that the depression she calls the 'Kimball streak' may do him in, just like Grandpa, as the farm consumes all of Jay's life. In a state known for tight-lipped, one- word responses, At the Center of Things excels at capturing the issues these rugged dairy farmers deal with on a daily basis, in their own words, without expert analysis or omniscient narrator. The more candid and personal the interviews become, the more the viewer realizes that it is only the spectacular scenery which separates the viewer from the universality of the stories. In a very natural and human way the participants' stories become 'our stories', the series name of which At the Center of Things is one of four episodes."--1998 Peabody Awards entry form.
