Description
Episode Description
This is episode three, 'The Power of Example.' This last episode of the program emphasizes the importance of parents being a model for their children. Michael Brandwein teaches parents to show their children that adults also make mistakes and feel fear, and to further demonstrate how to deal with them through calm and productive problem-solving. Brandwein emphasizes that while children learn by telling and repetition, they learn better by overhearing and seeing, encouraging parents to reveal their own imperfections and teach accountability.
Series Description
"In three one-half hour programs, Parenting Puzzle: The Middle Years presents tips and techniques for improving communication between parents and children ages 9-13. Acclaimed parent educator Michael Brandwein uses humor and storytelling to focus on three important concepts: listening, problem-solving and modeling. A parent/discussion leader guide accompanies the series to help parents and others use each program effectively. "With a lack of good resources for parents of young people in this age group, Parenting Puzzle: The Middle Years stands as a much-needed - and easy-to-understand - training course for parents and child care providers. By focusing on broad concepts instead of specific problems, the series promotes better communication by improving underlying skills. Parenting Puzzle: The Middle Years is distributed nationwide to public television stations and parenting organizations."--1998 Peabody Awards entry form.
