Please. Permit. Wow that's great.
It was like he was morose and and he said Is there anything else I need to do. I said no harming others. Nothing was always always very helpful. And then he said I want to say goodbye. And I walked out very upset because I knew that well could be the last time I spoke with Herman. And he knew something his doctors to know obviously. Yeah. Right. But it's still probably a shock it was a shock
when we learned about this. Of course knowing Herman's age and his health. Was not good. We expected it but we hoped. That he would stay with us as long as possible. And he really did. I would meet with Herman regularly and talk about the campus and university affairs he was always well-informed he must have had a horde of spies out there but he always knew everything that was going on. But this last time I met with him just a little more than a week ago took a different home. He was more rose and and he said Is there anything else I need to do. I said no. I mean there's nothing. We're always always very helpful. And he said I want to say goodbye. And I walked out very upset because I knew that well could be the last time I spoke with her. I mean he knew something his doctors didn't know
obviously. Or as he wrote a brief Methodist version of an Episcopal service. Is this. This. Is dreams were so large they shake us and in turn shape the culture around us.
We all need somebody who believes in us somebody who sees us as we are and yet also sees us as we can be. This was his genius. But those of you who knew him well might be surprised that
as ever he was way ahead of us in his planning. He wanted a short service. Or as he wrote a brief version of a possible service to me. Jesus said I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me yet shall he believes in Me shall never die. And the Saul most rights Blessed be the Lord for he has passed that is in the morning. In the morning and is read in the evening. It fades and withers. We are consumed by your anger by your wrath. We are overwhelmed.
You have set before you our secrets and the light of your cot. His timing as always is amazing. We meet here for his role 62 years to the day that he was inaugurated. Interestingly enough. This is the same number of years that President William O'Brien was related to Indiana University Dr. Brian lived to be 95 and Dr. Wells lived to be 97. I wish you well Miles the part of human rights for some and all he did more than speak against racial injustice he acted with quiet calm and
moral clarity to see that African-Americans and others were treated with dignity. Herman trusted us to do our best as he set up this faculty. You should praise them when they succeed and cover them when they fail. He was able to transform any self concern into other concerns. And that is why we so readily followed him. At least even some can be. His dreams were so large they shaped us and in turn shaped the culture around us. We all need somebody who believes in us somebody who sees us as we are and yet also sees us as we can be.
This was his genius. I am certain this wonderful man knew disappointment and pain. His life had its sorrows regrets and just like everyone else. It may even be that as public a man as he was eating Herman was seated in the back of the room. When asked if he was a participant in the. Create his own legend by 1962 when he ended his 25 year presidency he had turned a small midwestern college man who had distinguished themselves as among the country's greatest educational leaders. I can think of no more fitting tribute than to name the library which is the heart and soul of the university after this champion of knowledge and discovery on campus.
It. Was actually to actually go into it. This was the way for every member of my you as well as the Bloomington area to
recognize him in his accomplishments. That's why we chose the noon time right around lunch time where hopefully a lot of people would be here. Also the longest bell tolls at noon and we figured that such a man deserved such an honor. Students faculty. Because that's a club now. Thank you. That's a close. Look at those. They still bother me. This is. Home. I just made four points.
That I watch. Knowledge. Of right here. Well. I knew that I had both bars. And a tail and I would and since I was first one in the lead I could bleed out get out there's only seven trumps. And my chances of getting. For having and them having a division of four because I had three. Then I had two good other cards. I played the off highest off card and then I went to the lower one which was the same suit in courts a very there on and. Off. Well I just did. I only cheat in my knowledge. They go to their beginners and I'm not. That's way I cheated through much you know. Yeah. Like.
Our own. I played with beginners before and they remade pretty bad. Yeah and that's the same as cheating. That's one the things you just don't do. For you know where you have a card and the suit is played and you. Take a trumpet intro and instead. Are you have a trump and it's a higher trunk than what you have and you threw off was throwing another card in place of a card that's necessary to play. I think that's a. No. You got it.
Right. Right. It was all right.
You're right we are our butts whipped here. You're going to go so you want to get one last game with 11 of your mind right now. Yeah that's right yeah that's right the right to tell you to take a second of three. I mean show you who's boss. Good deal those cards as experience. May be just the interview. Oh wow I thought it would be more face to face. I've been playing ever since I came to Bloomington in 1986 when I transferred here as a junior. And the guys on my floor promptly indoctrinated me and Judy. The.
Ways of the UK playing full. Now I'm a region rat from Northwest Indiana where not only do they not know what your career is but they also don't know what the region is you only find that out down here. But ever since then I've been. Pick that up. Ever since then. I've been a. Sordid devoted fan but that's a sordid. Yes quite Simi actually I mean very unseemly white underbelly of your life. What do I call him there's really not space. What's that about mornings I don't it's a it's a it's a good thing. It's a good thing. My preference is double deck bed euchre. We'll talk about that. This should be my. I. Need strength anything about it. Yeah my maybe not easy when your prayer is like I. Don't.
Have to be you got to every. Girl have the right was a very very. But doesn't like to know that I say anything else of. Import or. Drink they revoke my zoning permit because I could fall over and kill somebody you know. So I have to settle for it as a no way there's no way I'm going to take it I thought it. Was a spade said here I want to play euchre. Two drunk guys playing three you know it's everybody has their sort of story right. That's definitely my that's it lead with the best card you had Steve. It's like yeah I can tell. You what I mean. Oh man I don't.
Believe they're beating us up right. Look at this. Oh. Right. Presumably that way sits. By me. With. My hara kiri and I think. The quicker we can we can fall out the bottom. I can shuffle cards to save my life. I never have to throw up in the air they need more stuff more efficiently than I do you know I was always the old take a hard look at it. Well little lady. You mean like what kind of lingo do people use outside the game. That's also used in the game. You know like I
mean like living in the barn. You look at that a right for the cook the potential right. What I say. Is when you're almost about to win there in the barn and did you did your best. I did. Sorry it is not way to start and it's a few other people. Oh I can't say no to this token I say no thank you. How could I say no to this new turns down of the earth. That's pretty blunt there Ed.. It didn't matter whose aces that so. That's what I thought. I figure that means farmer in German so getting in the barn is you know it's a farmer's game. I don't know if this my dear departed just a boy look at this. I always forget what the suit is. Pay-Pal It's my life. There are serious numbers here. That's right. Follow those. Really you're going to be useful.
I was going to look at what you guys say but you guys say what you guys say. Oh he was there with a knife and it's about time I stopped getting beat up here. Look at that two points. That really it really if you want it. What was I saying. Lingo. Well of course is the the word to Renee. This has made its way into the language for many other reasons but I don't know that it's came from euchre or any of the other trick based games I'm just I'm not your expert but I play one on TV. Yes quite often yeah. I don't know I have a feeling that it's. Why women that I don't. Like. Yeah all those and then some order of means. Whoever is the somebody is not the dealer is telling the dealer you pick that card out because I want to play that suit Trump and even though you have that card our team is going to kick your butt.
That's what it means so you know ordered out piss away I say and do what I say pal because I'm going to show you how to do things and then wipe your white the table with your face or something like that like right now maybe I should do it. Is that your past that you don't order up. I didn't write it I will pass. I looked at that turned out of our He's a fool you a fool for a pardon. Yeah you said that other terms let's see what is the idea of a power you know you have and I don't I don't hear your terms used as often as terms like you're telling me you know that even if I mean right now nor do you have to look at the first base you want to write haha that's why you're a squeeze play you know you say things are getting ugly people use outside of baseball but next to zero. I don't know none of the terms that are special to you. But people used to run your life. What's Trump made spades next.
It's very traditional. If I have seen far in the world it's because I've stood on the shoulders of giants players. People who were so addicted they put me to shame. And in fact I'm not even really. I just say I'm addicted I don't have I go through withdrawal every so often you know because I don't get enough you could. But. It might. Nowadays a couple times a month and that's nothing like what I used to play every night you know and it was a single day it was double deck you felt like you cared when you played that you'll never go back. Double Decker euchre this year you spend more time talking about the hand then actually playing you know I don't mean just plain old regular yogurt. I'm trying to teach him how to play these two don't know how to play like you're so you know of course you know you you know. But yeah
it's much more fun for anybody just so I talk about double deck you can hear double deck you're better than single you're single like bigger because it's more interesting. There's two of everything you do on all the cars. Theres 12 cards perhaps less really and so if you have so its because its to everything if you throw out the rye flour and somebody else without the right bar the first one thrown wins. And you bid to see who gets to call the big number of tricks that you think you and your partner can take many of the deficit you down in your career but it is fun. When I say that we do nothing for emphasis it is so much fun. I don't even know why I do this because I want to double your night here at Borders. Well see we can do this and I just. Frankly not a lot I know that I mean I've been working for a long time exactly what the term means that obviously it's French. But. No actually I'm going to write. I am but I'm from the region.
Yes I have this. People say oh no see I'm from Northwest Indiana which is in a different time zone and in a different real world you know the rest of you know my to forsake us so we didn't hear about your career or about the phrase the region until you get down here. So no I didn't hear about it so I got here which is why I'm a kind of coming late to your career. But if I had lived any farther south what now I do like to buy a dime's pick that up. Sorry. But if I was from anywhere else in the end I would have said that yes I have heard it many times. I'm from Indiana aren't I as a response to. I called what you may be trying to get at.
