Description
Series Description
"WANTED: 6 rms., AFFORDABLE looks at the current housing situation in the Boston area by focusing on Meridian Street in East Boston. Four separate stories are told through the people of Meridian Street: a first time buyer, a newly settled Cambodian family, a local [realtor], a first time developer and a long time resident of the neighborhood. "Housing was chosen as a topic after many talks between WGBH staff and community members throughout the year. Through the WGBH Community Advisory Board and other Community Relations outreach efforts, housing was named a vital topic for the Ten O'clock News anchors and reporters to examine in a special half hour program (materials included). "The program was well received by audience and press and the specific East Boston community. This is an example of a local station's ability to produce informative programming in an innovative way. The Community Relations Department sent a special mailing to alert various organizations about the program, organizations which would have a particular interest in housing issues. This department also offered a housing resource [list free] to the audience and filled many requests for this list. "'WANTED: 6 rms., AFFORDABLE deserves Peabody consideration for taking on many facets of housing issues; for showing how these issues affect different people's lives; for dealing with the topic in very human terms and for demonstrating high standards in broadcast journalism."--1985 Peabody Awards entry form.
