Description
Episode Description
This is a seven-part adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, read by Ursula Drabek.
Series Description
"As a mass medium for the entertainment of children, radio has allegedly been passed by -- by television. But it is our belief that children's radio is the best of both worlds -- books and television, -- in that it can reach out actively and resent many points of view (like tv), while leaving the imagination free (like a good book). "The Spider's Web is a radio storybook, produced by WGBH Radio and broadcast each weekday, which uses that advantage in pursuing these goals: to bring the family together in appreciation of literature presented by professional actors ad enhanced by music and special effects; to introduce children to diverse cultures (from American ghetto and Eskimo to French, English, West Indian and Hindu) using authentic representatives of those cultures in the presentation; to present classic children's stories of literary value in the most stimulating possible form; to set before our listeners such remarkable human beings as Harriet Tubman and exciting and moving true stories like those of Laura Ingals Wilder. "Imagination and shared experience are important to creativity and a healthy social life. We believe that the Spider's Web uses radio well (uniquely well, at present) to encourage imagination and compassion."--1974 Peabody Awards entry form.
