Interview with Hoang Thi Thu sister of Hoang Thi Dan.
Interviewer:
When did your husband go to the South? Did you get any news from him
during that period? Were you worried? And what was your reaction when
you received the official notice that he had been killed?
Hoang Thi Thu:
It was in 1969 that my husband went into the army. He stayed in the
north for about two months, and in December of that year he left for
the South. I sent letters to him, but did not hear anything from him at
all.
Interviewer:
Stop and start again.
Hoang Thi Thu:
It was in December of 1969 that my husband went South. I never received
any letters from him after he got there. I sent him many letters, but I
don't know whether he ever received them either. And then in 1971
suddenly I received an official notice saying that my husband had been
killed in that year. I did not get any further detail on him.
I felt really miserable, very angry, and really dumbfounded. I just did
not know what to do after hearing of my husband's death. Now, I was
really already very angry and frustrated that year when they bombed us.
But since after the death of my husband was announced, I have been
really out of my mind. I have not been able to concentrate on anything
at all.
Sometimes I am just a body without any soul. I cannot hear anything and
cannot think about anything at all. I have been out of my mind since
1971 when the village gave me the notice of my husband's death.
Sometimes I am just like a crazy person, like a corpse.
Interviewer:
Did you worry when your husband was in the South?
Hoang Thi Thu:
Yes, I worried a lot. It was really very miserable. My children was
very young then, and I was really out of my mind. I have really been
out of my mind.
Interviewer:
Do you think your husband died in a worthwhile cause?
Hoang Thi Thu:
My husband died in combat in the South, but I do not know where.
