Description
Series Description
"The Pittsburgh History Series is an ongoing series of hour-long documentaries that highlight various parts of our city's history. Since 1988, these documentaries have captivated local audiences by mixing memories, old films, [mementos], home movies, snapshots and new interviews. Focusing on popular history that's often overlooked in official history books, this series has sparked new interest in local lore, the importance of non-political history, people's recollections of ice cream parlors, dance halls, ball fields, parades, the beauty of old neighborhoods, and places that have been torn down. These 'scrapbook' documentaries have all caused unprecedented viewer response, and unusually high ratings (when available). Local newspaper critics have praised the series as the most noteworthy recent accomplishment of any station in this area. "Letters and requests form teachers have let us know that all these programs have been used in local classrooms, from elementary schools (where 'Kennywood Memories' helps prepare kids for the annual trip to the amusement park) to history classes (where 'Wylie Avenue Days' helps show what black life was like in Pittsburgh before 'urban renewal') to science classes (where'Flying Off The Bridge To Nowhere!' helps explain the mysterious job of civil engineers.) "The Pittsburgh History Series has brought about new ties with community organizations like the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation and the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania. WQED has also been invited to work with the City of Pittsburgh's newly formed Historic Review Commission. "The Pittsburgh History Series has tapped into our local community, its affections, its spirit, and its collective memory. These programs have earned WQED a new reputation for community programming."--1991 Peabody Awards entry form.
