- Description
- Episode Description
- "SOAPBOX is a 13-part series of half-hour programs that fearlessly tackle any subject important to teenagers, from sexuality to racism, depression to nuclear war. Because SOAPBOX confronts these issues openly and directly, it serves as a vehicle for communication between generations and between young people themselves."On each edition of SOAPBOX, we bring together a small group of diverse young people to talk about the issues that concern them. The frank, unedited discussions, moderated by Dr. Tom Cottle, are intertwined with edited comments from a much larger group of teens taped at various locations. "On the submitted program, 'Teenagers and Sex Roles,' high school students debate sexual stereotypes, the changing roles of men and women, and their personal reflections on the issue. Preceding this show is the 'SOAPBOX Sampler,' a 5-minute compilation of several SOAPBOX programs, which presents a general overview of the series. "SOAPBOX does not pretend to be the complete answer to all the problems teenagers face. But SOAPBOX is the first step in facing up to, talking about, and understanding those problems. The impact of SOAPBOX continues beyond the initial broadcast, as families, classes, and community groups use the program to illuminate complex issues and to spark lively debate on difficult subjects, debate that most often wouldn't happen with a catalyst like SOAPBOX."--1985 Peabody Awards entry form. This is tithe episode on sex roles as described above.
