Description
Program Description
"The story of German Russians begins with the migration of land-hungry German peasants to Ukraine under covenant with Catherine the Great, and ends with their descendants? migration to the North Dakota prairies under the aegis of American railroad companies. "The first part of 'The Germans From Russia: Children of the Steppe, Children of the Prairie' illuminates the history of this ethnic group, tracing their movement from the original Germanic homeland to their pioneer experience on the Russian steppes. The second half of the film uses stories and anecdotes told by the descendants of those who migrated to [America] to show the difficult adjustments and hard life of the German Russians on the American prairie. Entire villages of Germans From Russia migrated to North America in the early nineteenth century and blended in so well that many people are unaware that they are a distinctive ethnic group. This documentary seeks to raise awareness and appreciation for a culture that helped shape the prairie character."--1999 Peabody Awards entry form.
