In Black America; Rance Allen, Gospel Singer

- Transcript
From the University of Texas at Austin, KUT Radio, this is In Black America. You know what I just love the way of on the music with structure. It's a thing to me that most gospel music will kind of like more of a stroking of the type of effort. You know, you just hit the end and you get to an hour or two in a studio and set up these russians because, you know, this is a studio in Toronto and so forth. The studio back in that day has much more respect than it does today. If anybody lets you in the studio, you just go in and see what you can do and you don't have it. And the music back in that time was kind of more of a, you know, you call together the best people, but because they had to add any structure to the music, the music kind of sounded that way.
But I've noticed with R&B music and all the way here. R&S Allen of the R&S Allen group. Between 1971 and 1974, R&S Allen set the music world on fire with the electrifying recordings from the stacked on gospel truth label. It's like just my salvation. There's going to be a showdown and ain't no need of crying. It broke down stylistic barriers between gospel rock and soul musical styles as they never had before. Allen began playing piano when he was seven and picked up the guitar two years later. He created his gospel giant James Cleveland as his main influence, but also named Ray Charles and Chuck Berry. In 1968, with his brothers Tom and Steve, he started the R&S Allen group. In 1971, they won $500 on the gospel talent contest, where stock records promotion man Dave Park was one of the judges.
And the rest they say is history. Today, more than 40 years in music, they have a new CD entitled The R&S Allen Group Live Experience 2 celebrating 40 years of music and ministry. I'm John L. Henson Jr. and welcome to another edition of In Black America and the beginning of our 41st season. On this week's program, R&S Allen of the R&S Allen Group in Black America. I'm John L.
