painters maryland murphy and sean deadly but realistically represent a figure but in dramatically different ways deadly up and zeroes in on particular body parts it could be a woman's hands or face or the bottom of reflect most of murphy's works look like movie stills from the nineteen thirties and forties while deadly uses found objects and like models for his inspiration murphy carefully researches subject for her pieces she started working on the idea for her new work about eight years ago when she was in an old junk store in chicago i was going through a pile of scoffed at home this ship that was painted in most curious manner that ships were painted the end what is termed a tasseled hat it was early can launch and they were meant to dazzle gunners from afar they were aiming at the ships murphy collected about a dozen of the postcards that showed the short lived stripe in checkerboard patterns shops where she was waiting for them to inspire a painting she ran across a
newspaper photograph that triggered this series it showed a group of japanese traitors having a good day if the stock exchange i looked at the filing paper and an economy and i knew i had to use that kind of image somehow those images have resulted in a rich body of work that focuses on falling papers in a highly detailed graphite drawings called spreading knowledge feature a woman tossing papers out of a basket at the papers and now one war was really a stand in for knowledge after she finished that when murphy combine the idea of the flying papers with that dazzle patterns from the postcards ec as a gentleman sitting reading a newspaper oblivious to what's going on and papers are falling in the sky just outside his peripheral vision that shift is just about to enter his peripheral vision on the
horizon and see me sitting at their son or daughter so it's that moment in time just before surprise happens the viewer knows it's going to be a surprise but the man reading the paper a dozen deadly prefers to concentrate on the figure he says he's intrigued with the idea of showing his work next markets because it should raise even more questions for the viewer and the two of us together is an interesting choice she brings almost religions interplay in this white fluttering papers there's a little bit of a mystery and both are works sean says many of his are close ups and we wonder who the people are what why are we zeroing in this close deadly makes hand formed frames de emphasize the subject and to give it a sculptural quality one of his pieces is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand it's a steel viewing box that has leather science and there's a switch on the side to turn the switch on
and illuminates a light on the inside you look through the class at the troops are lands that magnifies what's below and what you can see is a tiny little the moment that has been somewhat magnified instead of the canvas the most talented prefer deadly uses hard way i first find cases and then really reshape are some point that they don't run amok of them were filed onto just the schip the money bp they're kind of a visual surprises and that's something i've tried to do on my own work sean is a meticulous painter it's interesting because chavez deal with that figure and now i'm moving away from the figure but i still feel like many of my works have eight a presence of that figure with the following paper that paper has to come from somewhere someone's drop that someone's thrown their own you know where's it coming from its alluding to the figure without actually seeing it and looking forward to showing with sean penn and
it's continued fun of the show opens friday evening with an artist's reception at cumberland gallery in green hills for national public radio i'm at now
