Episode Description
Color film about a Chicago deli on Grand Ave. famous for the owner's temperamental antics. Jerry Meyers is known for yelling at his customers for split-second delays in ordering and frequently takes indecisive customers back outside to look at the menu. Meyers speaks about his behavior, his past, and the history of his deli: "I don't know what percentage anymore is gimmick or my own neurosis." He tries to explain why people might come into his place and deal with his behavior. "Ninety percent of people can't be masochists, so it must be something else... They're very humanized when they walk in here. Where they work, there just number 4 or 5. They become human when they walk in here." Palazzolo films in the style of direct cinema, following Jerry as he rushes around his establishment, cutting this with shots of him speaking directly to the camera.
