It's just kind of window has immigration allowed women to come because they've a boy they say they have anyway. So you know what this summer and the kids already grown not they never even see their pictures of consistently. OK let's talk a little bit about. Your father and mother and how they. Came to live and what you know of accomplished or what have they got along. Well and actually like I say my father in his group of Tucson merchants came up here. When the town really wanted to get going want to grow. Well my father had seven in this establishment. So. He. Came up. A lot and Bill seven places. Place where I was born one two three. Four. Five six seven places. So that kind of give you the boost at that time my father was a very prominent citizen of the delta and he was involved in some bombing sharecropper you know all that kind of stuff.
And at one time in the 20s he had a thousand acres characters would hire a lot of Chinese people. And. He would he work everything out of the headquarters here in the company users. Here I was upstairs downstairs with Gen. Richard III story. And the story and he himself was a doctor too. But I don't know where he got all that knowledge but he was very intelligent. You seem to be very biased. And but in your 30s you had business all along here in Nevada. Oregon California. And. Started he asked for. Food markets and such. My 20s and 30s finally you know we're. Going to go out because the big ones come in. And. Found out that he himself amid it that it's just too far that you can't watch it. So. That's how I got into that kind of
business is when I came back from college I went to kill stores and I got kind of stuck with that going back down there. So the part that he played in LA. Was quite significant. Like I say yes seven places the bill and he was at the center of all the civic things. Even in the well when there have been money. But our community Colwell slowly collected and built the community home at the end. You put up the money and build it and then years later got his money but that was away years he figured he says incessantly till you got to have it and there wasn't enough money to do so. At that time. He was. Quite. Well-off. Until. You just mentioned that you went to school education how how you got out of life and oh you know well I did not attend any elementary school here.
At seven years old I had to go to school and I was brought up to Grass Valley in the county because. At that time my father's reason for taking me up there since he had a ranch up there and we went up there to stay. Just about a hundred yards away there was a school. And we went to that school in here. Secretary school you know that guys. How can you know English you know you are Chinese so we have that Morocco sign so that I was away I had my own mental school education and that's about it and I started high school this year and I have came down here and I went to court and then high school myself. Finished and then. At that time my father was very poor. You lost everything to a person whose thousand acres around the Grass Valley Ranch and only got there with the fewest steps you want here barely.
Surviving. The better up a couple years. Here. No. College prep courses taken. So I had to convince him I had to go to junior college with what I can get in the Cal and I did go to college and then I found a care finish up the last two years. And that's when I. Wish creation would. Use them. I study economics and business menstruation and I came back because there were no more just broke up. And unfortunately I didn't know I didn't have to go. And so I'd start to take care of his business and Simon. And that's how I got. Done 58 years and. There's. Great posts about how a lot of guidance and I mean and how what was the Chinese last year you know that's a very good and there are a lot of course today we know a lot that's a family. A family of choice a lot like I've said before that was that on the property.
Well. You know she came here and you know how Chinese talk sometimes they say Lucky lucky and becomes lucky. That means and can only use. Happy living that's a good name for succumb to spring up. And I'm originally it was called Rockport. Yellow Sea Cape York T. Because of this great big war and part of living here they're exporting all of these sins. I bought some Cisco So that was a good name. Lockport Mr. Lott's point. But then unfortunately all the letters got screwed up went to Lakeport and something that never got down there so after a few years they decided to drop the port and just kept it locked. In in honor of Mr. Watt. So that's how that name become. What about my lawyer right here. The gambling. Oh yeah this gambling place. The original name in your story. There you go ahead with the counter like I work because I get
off on a light from very well the original name was not by the name came about. One thousand nine hundred thirty. Seven or eight. Course the gambling was shut down 1950 so the original name came from WANT TO GROW SOME OTHER me but they decided we're going to change the name. I think what they did was oh maybe the gambling house wasn't very good maybe they were never going to any monies or the sign of the change and good luck or whatever so means big walk. By them. I mean yeah big welcome that's what it means. Can you let me use you stated to say something to say you know what I mean by them as they grow up. Yeah so that was a name that was until. Recently it was not. OK. That's why I think that's all we need. To.
Hear. You know there's a you're right. I think we're doing OK. The next person just out of the book. Why.
Oh. Yeah.
Yes.
This is the fourth table. These 40.
People change this one back. Kind of stuff. So. That's. Right. And sometimes. With the right. Guy. That's what it means. They. Will come. To. Me. I was born in that room. Jacob when. You want me here that's ok. But you know when you get start talking to me is that yesterday you said this is the house where I live or is that what you have to go that far you go right OK.
OK. OK go ahead. Right now this is the house in LA here where I was a boy up there up stairs. And you see a little balcony there. You used to when I was a little kid I used to stay watched a lot of people downtown downstairs and general merchandise store my father. Which let's say. Like hardware store and a Chinese herbal store. And also dry goods. Late. Ok ok now. We come. This is. This is the upstairs where I was born and the balcony with a small pot. I used to play up there and watch the street with all the people downstairs in my father's headquarters general merchandise though a. Dry goods store store and also like a hardware. Course this one is to next door.
And. That's. Why I live here till I was about seven years old. Then I went. Oh so this is the building. This is the building right here. Here is the front side. Yeah. Well no you come in from the top. The highway sign that's for the residence. And there there's a step that comes down to the store from the top. There's a big door comes down like most of these buildings have that this one doesn't. This one house and on the side comes down to store. General Merchandise still upstairs. We just saw this. She went they reinforce all this kind of. Two
three years ago. Close it up. He sold a building and oh yeah yeah. Tell us a little bit about this. This building here this association one of the this is just one of the buildings. Originally I don't think that was built I don't think it was built for association. Somebody else build it. I don't recall who they bought it. And later you know 20 that was established and then it went on six or eight years and it was come very dormant. Nothing happened and then after the Second World War they came back and they reestablish it and they always had great times a loss of people lost some members maybe 50 60 members blown WHAT YOU'RE STILL have a headquarters this. Summer Cisco and Los Angeles has this one too. So that's.
Always a risk. You're. Both right now. Yeah maybe we could swing the most from originally. In the point when they start school. This being the power. And then. Private structure of the whole lot of new managers and say why isn't it right rather than OK right after this. Well these are the these were some of my original seat not oh. Back in the thirties when when the seats are put in here for the Chinese school being this was a power and instructor. We would pay him
but among the teachers and school our school five to eight and even on Saturdays 9 to 12 you remember that. And. And we study it here and. Back in 1954. Now in the 40s this was close up there was no Chinese school could be 54 I repose. This. Schoolhouse. They figured that I learned my Chinese here and I have to do something so I came out with the help of the time and some riches. And Mr. Johnson's foundation then we re-establish the school and the peak of it. It ran for about 10 12 years. The people we had 25 30 students it was done pretty good. Just like anything else when the kids get bigger they didn't want to go in and. I used to I used to sit on this this desk here and the instructors up there and I was often asked why do you always sit there with I
love the car. And if I sat up there would be too close a teacher and I sat back here and open the window to talk to somebody who was in the school see. This was. This was my favorite spot. I always said I came here about three years at school and. Sat night and school has helped me through. We had maybe two weeks of vacation. So it was force onto us but we did. But today they checked the school. Bus with. These pictures pictures of us. OK.
When you're ready. A. Little bit about what life is. Like living in LA for so many years and it's just home to me. I know everybody here and everybody know and I help a lot of elderly people and all young people. But I have new people coming here to help pick up my whole set up there. What about. What makes Locke so different or special. Well. But you know everybody's happening to help. People. Overcome. And I did a lot of
people and. They enjoy coming here. Just because they want to go back to residential area and they love coming in here you have to the company. Yeah. Now last question. So far when you live in LA What has changed for you. What do you think over the years actually. Well things changed a lot or the elders. And all the young people finish high school college. Got a job in a city that will come back. I just don't see it's rather ironic that we do have a lot of Mexican. Kids. So that's really I don't know what would happen if the building fell by 70 here. OK thank you very much.
I'll. Meet you here you know. Well to start with I'll say
it's all. Part of the. Bars. People expect. Quite a lot. I think the block also felt. Like. They enjoyed the atmosphere. They have a good. Meal so. We have a lot of trade. Offs. And I think that just because of. The money on the ceiling. Good during.
The day. That's what our. Brothers are saying. I'm still all. Dressed. Up. OK thank you very much. Thank you. Yeah.
Yeah. OK OK. All. Right.
