TONIGHT'S ARTISTS RAYMOND CARVER (1939-1988) was born in Clatskanie, Oregon and lived in Port Angeles, Washington until his death. He devoted most of his career to the art of the short story and the poem. His short story collections include Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, Cathedral and Where I'm Calling From: New and Selected Stories. His poetry collections include Winter Insomnia, Ultramarine and the posthumously published A New Walk to the River. His work has been translated into more than 20 languages. NOEL COWARD (1899-1974) was a playwright, composer, novelist, performer, director and screenwriter. His works include the plays Fallen Angels, Design for Living, Hay Fever, Private Lives, Blithe Spirit and Present Laughter, the films Brief Encounter and In Which We Serve; and innumerable songs for his revues, musicals and operettas. His books include two volumes of autobiography, Future Indefinite and Present Indicative; one novel, Pomp and Circumstance; and The Noel Coward Diaries, which were published posthumously. JANE CURTIN starred on Saturday Night Live for five years. She won Emmy Awards in 1984 and 1985 as Leading Actress in a Comedy for her work on Kate and Allie. Her movie credits include How to Beat the High Cost of Living, Suspicion and Coneheads. She appeared on Broadway with Joanne Woodward in George Bernard Shaw's Candida, and later reprised her role on television. Her other theatre credits include the Off-Broadway musical revue Pretzels, which she also, co-authored. She can be heard on Volume II of Selected Shorts on Audiocassette reading Gail Godwin's "St. George" and on Volume VII reading Tobias Wolffs "In the Garden of the North American Martyrs."
