Description
They wanted to "do something important." So a 17-year-old boy is dead and his 16-year-old buddy faces a charge of manslaughter today in Commck District Court. The victim was Dean Louis Weldon of 1415 Saxon Ave., Bay Shore. His buddy is Richard Polizzi of 2 Bertram Street, Islip, a classmate at Islip High School. He told police he and Weldon were riding around Friday night and decided to "do something important." POLICE SAID the boys went to Weldon's home where they got a hacksaw and then rode to the 340-foot transmitting tower of radio station WLIX off Freeman Avenue in Islip. According to police, the boys took turns in cutting the guy wires at the base of the tower and also unscrewed the turn-buckles. The tower started to topple from the top, away from the boys. They started running in the opposite direction. However, they said, the tower crumpled in half and snapped off and a half fell on top of Weldon. He was killed instantly. When Elliot Gross, an engineer for the- station, reported for work yesterday he saw the wreckage. But, it wasn't until police arrived that the body of Weldon was discovered. POLICE SAID THEY FOUND a slip of paper with Polizzi's name on it in Weldon's pocket. They questioned Polizzi at his part-time job at a metal finishing firm in Bohemia and he told them what had happened They said Polizzi was remorseful and grief-stricken over the tragedy. Station officials estimated damage at $3,000. They hope to have the station back on the air Tuesdav.
