Description
Description
7 scans . Contains two posters by Oppy. 1940s Amelia Opdyke Jones, who signed her work Oppy, was the artist of an unusual form of comic: 'The Subway Sun', a single-sheet subway car poster. This appeared in the subway of New York between 1935 and 1966 and was originally drawn by Fred Cooper. His assistant Amelia Opdyke Jones took over in 1946. 'The Subway Sun' promoted in a few panels good subway manners, and it is said that Oppy was the first to introduce the word "litterbug", derived from the then popular term "jitterbug". Oppy's panels were quite popular, although some, who assumed they were drawn by a man, were offended by her depiction of women: "...inadvertently jabbing strangers with their umbrellas or clunking heads with handbags." Amelia Opdyke Jones also drew another comic, called 'Reddy Kilowatt'.
