The music was inspired in large part by the lushness of color and rich Balinese village life captured in the film. Many scenes of authentic Balinese dance in the film also suggest traditional gamelan music, for which the musicians utilize a wide range of percussion instruments including tuned gongs, metallophones, drums, cymbals, and bamboo marimbas. The creation of this new work is made possible in part through the generous support of The California Arts Council, A State Agency; The Rockefeller Foundation; the Lutz Foundation; the National Endowment for the Arts; and individual donations. ASIA SOCIETY The Asia Society is America's leading institution dedicated to fostering understanding of Asia and communication between Americans and the peoples of Asia and the Pacific. A nonprofit, nonpartisan educational institution, the Asia Society presents a wide range of programs including major art exhibitions, performances, media programs, international conferences and lectures, and initiatives to improve elementary and secondary education about Asia. LEGONG: DANCE OF THE VIRGINS Shot on location with an all-Balinese cast, LECONC was directed by Henri de La Falaise who collaborated with color specialist William H. Greene to capture the rich colors of Balinese life. Released in 1935, the film holds the distinction of being the last silent film produced in Hollywood, as well as the last film to use the two-strip (as opposed to the later three-strip) Technicolor process. While LECONC tells a simple story of unrequited love between a young dancer named Poutou and a musician in the village gamelan orchestra, the film reveals much more about the West's view of the East in the earlier decades of this century. The melodramatic plot, the focus on seemingly horrific rituals, and the bare-breasted women appealed to Western filmmakers' notions of an idealized tropical paradise. Although the romance was created by Hollywood, the setting and players were nonetheless genuine, and the striking tapestry of Balinese culture and religious life are elegantly captured. GAMELAN SEKAR JAYA Gamelan Sekar Jaya is a non-profit, San Francisco-based performing arts group specializing in Balinese music and dance. Founded in 1979, the group has invited many of the finest Balinese composers, musicians and dancers to join them as guest artists-in-residence, allowing a vibrant artistic exchange that has brought the group international recognition. True to the Balinese spirit, Sekar Jaya seeks a dynamic balance between old and new, and has sponsored the creation of more than fifty new works of music and dance that are performed alongside more traditional pieces. Many involve collaborations between Balinese and American artists. The group has performed over 300 concerts in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Indonesia, with three tours of Bali to perform in the Bali Arts Festival. CLUB FOOT ORCHESTRA The eleven-piece ensemble, under the artistic directorship of Richard Marriott, has pioneered the modern use of live music for silent film. Since their debut in 1983, the Orchestra has performed hundreds of sold-out performances at such venues as San Francisco's Castro Theatre, the Smithsonian Institution, the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center, New Music America at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the NuArt Theater in Santa Monica. The Orchestra has written and performed the scores for six silent feature films: Robert Weine's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1919) and The Hands of Orlac (1924), F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu (1922), Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1926), Buster Keaton's Sherlock Jr. (1924), and P.W. Pabst's Pandora's Box (1928). In 1995, the Club Foot Orchestra scored 13 episodes of The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat, an animated series produced for CBS-TV. The Cluf Foot Orchestra's website is located at www.clubfoot.com.
