Night times is a production of Katy CA Channel 2. Oh. Live from the Twin Cities. This is not the times variety with Michelle barber. Once again with us tonight is the popular Twin Cities vocalist MARY JANE HALL And first our featured guest Marian McPartland Now Ann McPartland has been called the Renaissance woman of jazz for the simple reason that she has contributed her talents to more areas in the field of jazz and any other female player. She is a teacher a composer a pianist. She is head of her own record label. She is also the host of National Public Radio's Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz. Everything she
does points to the fact that Mary wants people to understand and appreciate the many different styles of jazz music. She has recently finished an album with George Shearing. She has lectured with the late Duke Ellington as well as compose songs for Sarah Vaughan. We are indeed privileged to have her with us tonight. Please welcome Marian McPartland. It'll
thank you if you want more from Marian McPartland a little later on. My next guest Mary Jane Oh me is one of the city's most popular vocalists so popular in fact that last year she was chosen as a best female vocalist and musician by many local music fans. Recently she has started to write and record her own material all through the song she's doing for us tonight are her original songs. The first one is called Faded Love she's being accompanied by Billy barber. Welcome please marry me. You.
You. Too. Me.
It is. We.
Are you know. We'll be back with your entire band a little later. Right now I would like to welcome once again Marian McPartland and one of her original this is called. The featured guest tonight Marian McPartland.
It is a pleasure a joy to have you on our show tonight. Thank you Michel. I know it you've been in town the past weekend as part of a woman's Jazz Festival at the Orpheum. Right. Why do you think that there is a need for a woman's Jazz Festival. Well right now Michel I think it's that women musicians still to a certain extent. A novelty. Not everybody knows that there are so many fine women musicians around. Including here in your own town like yourself and Janey Peterson. But all over the country there are many fine women players and I think there's still a need to have a festival to bring them all together and say look folks you know all of us women all playing but we sort of hope that one day there won't be that need that women will be more take. Not for granted but to absorbed into the mainstream of music. I know you're in the process of writing a book about Women in Jazz Yeah. Am I trying to get that down because the more I work at it the harder it gets because the more people
I find and. And right now I'm working on a chapter about Mary Lou Williams. And I'm hoping also to do a recording of music. Oh great. Now what kind of things do you look for when you're writing about profiling a certain person. Like what about Mary Lou Williams What are you trying. Well early days and how she learned to play and who our influences were and I mean she really I envied her as a child because she had all these great players the offensive person said to them she was a little kid you know like Elle Hines and James P. Johnson and all those people. And then she went with Andy Cook's band and she was just a teenager and that's how she learned to write and play and as she learned by doing which is really the best way I think. Do you think that it is easier today going back a little bit to the first question for women instrumentalists to be seen and to be accepted as it were. It's easier today than it was in the past. Oh definitely because I think that's one good thing that
women's lib has done is to. Make it possible for women to join in and do the things that went excepted years ago like it was considered nice for a woman to blow on her own though it wasn't nice. Even you even worry about looking nice when you're playing a piano. You know little of things of God out the window. Women can play they can play drums play the bass and and women everywhere and a lot of orchestras playing you see and hear them all the time. I know that a lot of people recognize you from your radio show where you play duets with many greats is Oscar Peterson Jamie Shea and what do you learn about your own technique through working with these people. Paul I'm really thankful that I know them and know some of the music because I have to be familiar with so much music in so many different styles that Jamie Shan is a far cry from Oscar Peterson which is real scary. BILL EVANS And then of course I had Mary Lou with him say he's a Scot Eubie Blake which is really it. Oh it's more old style traditional
ragtime if you will. Jazz from Chick Corea which is very progressive. FOSTER You know I just have to keep my wits about me. That's about it we do it very well as mere fact I'd like to hear you play another tune. We also had love to share. The next minute Marian is going to do for us one that is familiar to many of you jazz standard that was written about 40 years ago. It was written incidentally by a woman her name is Ann Renault. The song is for me once again Marian McPartland. When I do want to remind you that Marian McPartland's National Public Radio show will be on
again starting this coming April it's called Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz so be sure and listen for that. I also want to tell you about kind of a fun show we have coming up in April April 12th we have the legendary Kerner reign Glover with us this dynamic trio very well known in the Twin Cities area will be here for their first appearance on Friday. Also with us on April 12th is something that we really haven't tried before we have the flying Cara Mazzaroth brothers with us. They're not usually known for their juggling antics and they will be doing that as well as flouncing around the stage we haven't really figured out yet how we're going to simulcast juggling for our listeners but I'm sure we'll figure out something. So that's April 12. It's a special show be sure and watch that. Right now I'd like to welcome back once again this time with their entire band of Mary Jane all band. This is a tune called Love comes when you least expect it. The Mary Jane a little bit. Plan.
Your. Plan. When you then to go.
You're going to have the clean blue grass sound of Stoney Lonesome we also have a tape of Willie in the bes doing supermarket and boys at a hot number. We also have a steel drum solo by Cliff Alexis clip as part of the group she enjoys So there is going to be plenty of variety next week. I would like to thank my guests tonight Marian McPartland and Mary Jane all band. I would like to also bring back Mary Jane all right now for one more song this is called anybody else. Mary Jane a little bit. This is a production of
