Description
Episode Description
In dealing with Wagner's Lohengrin, Mme. Lehmann concerns herself with the role of her major operatic debut - Elsa. Alternatively taking one part, then the other, she coaches two singers (Evangeline Noel as Elsa and Olga Chronis as Ortrud) in the Elsa-Ortrud scene from Act II of Lohengrin. Her remarks are chiefly directed to stage movement and vocal characterization. In Agathe's aria from Act II of Weber's Der Frischutz, Mme. Lehmann demonstrates to student Judy Allen how the youthful, ardent qualities of the role can be realized. Between the two performances Mme. Lehmann delights her audience with anecdotes from her younger days. She also sets the scene for both performances by summarizing the plot up to the point of action. Series Description
In a career as performer and teacher that stretched over fifty years, Lotte Lehmann has enriched the lives of countless audiences and dozens of young singers. For three decades a world-famed star of the Vienna and Metropolitan Opera Companies, Mme. Lehmann has chosen, in the last dozen years, to work with students not in vocal production but in expression and acting. She has conducted her famous master classes in lieder and opera roles for the past twelve years at her musical home, the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California. In July of 1961, Mme. Lehmann gave her final master classes at the Music Academy. This series presents a record of her final classes, during which Mme. Lehmann suggests dramatic changes; she often sings to demonstrate a variety of points. LOTTE LEHMANN MASTER CLASS is a production of KQED, San Francisco. Produced at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California. The 7 half-hour episodes that comprise this series were originally recorded on film.
