- Episode Description
- In this profile of 89-year-old conductor Leopold Stokowski and his American Symphony Orchestra in rehearsal at Madison Square Garden's Felt Forum in New York City, the orchestra performs three works Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings; the first movement of Franz Schubert's Eighth ("Unfinished") Symphony; and Sergei Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, with Jerome Lowenthal as piano soloist. Throughout the program, Stokowski offers verbal interpretations of the music, prods the members of his orchestra, and even pauses to provide musical anecdotes. "You notice the jazz influence there." He remarks during the Rachmaninoff piece. "He used to down into the bed parts of New York, and it began to creep into his music." Stokowski's assertive personality is in evidence during the entire hour as he stands at the podium, hair tousled, hands describing the arcs and sweeps of the music, and voice chiding "Crescendo, cellos ,AeP not very good. You do better tomorrow." Off-camera, he remarks that he is constantly seeking "to realize what was in the soul of the composer and make it alive again." He is scornful of "mechanical" conductors, who "do not have that impulsive quality in the nature of art and human life." Born in London April 18, 1882, Stokowski was a musical prodigy who became at the age of 14 the youngest student ever admitted to the Royal College of Music. After becoming organist and choirmaster at St. James ' Church, Piccadilly, in 1902, he assumed the same position three years later at St. Bartholomew's Church in New York City. In 1909 he became an orchestral conductor with the Cincinnati Orchestra, and attracted worldwide celebrity after taking the post of conductor with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1912. During the next 26 years, Stokowski developed the Philadelphia into one of the world's great symphony orchestras. At the same time, he was challenging traditional ideas about orchestral creations, as reflected in his transcriptions of Bach's compositions for organ into works for full orchestra. In recent years, he has largely confined his musical energies to the American Symphony Orchestra, which he founded nine years ago. Fanfare "Stokowski Rehearses" is a production of NET Division, Educational Broadcasting Corporation, transmitted nationally by PBS, the Public Broadcasting Service. This hour-long piece was shot in color. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
