In addition to films of the concerts at the American Theatre at the Fair, there are films taken at the open air concert in the eleventh century Grand Place of Brussels and music of the Goodman band is heard as viewers take a short tour of the fair grounds. Benny Goodman was born in Chicago May 30, 1909. He gained the top of the music field soon after he organized his first band in New York in 1933. During the Thirties he was named King of Swing. He's retained the title with his work with his orchestra and trio, quartet and sextet. He has also appeared as clarinet soloist in concert appearances with many symphony orchestras. Recently, Mr. Goodman has become known as America's diplomat with clarinet. In late 1956, he and his orchestra made a highly successful tour of the Far East under the joint auspices of the US State Department and the American National Theater and Academy. At the Brussels concerts, the full orchestra shares the stage with the trio, quartet and sextet. The trio is composed of Goodman, drummer Roy Barnes and pianist Roland Hanna. Arvell Shaw adds his bass to make up the quartet. Zoot Sims, tenor sax, and Rex Peer, trombone, are added to make up the quartet. Vocalists with the Goodman band are Jimmy Rushing and Ethel Ennis. The program: "Let's Dance," "One O'clock Jump," "Stealing Apples," "Sing Sing Sing," "Bugle Call Rag." "Roll Em," "If I Had You," "Going to Chicago Blues," "The World is Waiting for the Sunrise." The Westinghouse Broadcasting Company, Inc. with the cooperation of the United States State Department sponsored the Goodman band appearance at the Brussels Fair.
