- Description
- NEWS: Update on Cardinal Meeting at Vatican: The unprecedented Vatican summit on priestly sexual abuse concluded last Wednesday with Pope John Paul II. Correspondent Kim Lawton talks via satellite to John Allen, Vatican correspondent for National Catholic Reporter about the summit, the upcoming Catholic bishops meeting in June and the possibility of a greater role for Catholic lay people. THEN, how religious is America, and how are Americans religious? R & E will explore a range of subjects, including Protestants and Catholics, American spirituality, and the relationship between religion and culture. A significant part of the series will be a national survey on religion and spirituality in American life which RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY conducted in partnership with U.S. News & World Report. This week, R & E examines religious diversity in the U.S. In addition to the survey results and expert commentary, R & E profiles a small community in an Atlanta suburb where religious tolerance is being put to the test. Jeff Sheler, religion writer for U.S. News & World Report and a contributing correspondent for R & E, reports on what happened when Muslims in Lawrenceville, Georgia requested permission to create an Islamic cemetery on land they previously purchased--located across the street from a Methodist church and cemetery.
