Description
In this episode, novelist and screenwriter David Lodge follows the Camino de Santiago from the middle of France to the farthest corner of northwest Spain, a path walked by millions of pilgrims since the Middle Ages, to the shrine of St. James the Great in Santiago de Compostela--in its heyday, the third greatest center of pilgrimage in Christendom after Jerusalem and Rome. He makes the thousand-mile journey along the Camino on foot and bicycle, and sometimes by the less traditional means of a car. Along the way, Lodge takes in a mixture of the sacred and the profane: riotous fiestas, like the running of the bulls in Pamplona; visions of contemporary Spanish life, architecture and landscapes; and glimpses of the Camino's mystical past.
