Description
Program Description
Each year in an old Texas mission, an ancient miracle play which is a survival rather that a revival of the very earliest drama, is presented at Christmas. Los Pastores (The Shepherds) actually antedates the famous Passion Play of Oberammergau by several hundred years; it was enacted in the early Church of England as far back as 980 and became popular in France, Germany, Italy, and Spain before 1000. Since the play has been continuously presented in Spain, the Spanish version is believed to exist in almost its original form. In addition, Los Pastores with many variations, has continued in other European countries. Los Pastores is a Christmas story - a story of shepherds and their journey to see the Holy Child in Bethlehem. The play, as it is performed in Texas today, presents a mixture of sacred teachings, Indian imagery, and Mexican religious folklore. Priests and monks originated the miracle play cycle in Europe to act out events in the life of Christ and other Biblical stories as a means of instructing the people. Franciscan fathers introduced the play on this continent. It was presented on Mexican soil as early as the sixteenth century and was brought to Texas by the padres who founded the missions there. When the missions were secularized in 1794, the play was left entirely in the hands of the Mexican people for almost one-hundred years. Around the turn of the century some of the residents of San Antonio became interested Los Pastores as a bit of folklore. At that time, they play was only performed in the yard of a Mexican home. But there was a great demand for public performance and a published script, and soon Los Pastores was being presented each Christmas for all the people of San Antonio. During the last few years the San Antonio Conservation Society has presented Los Pastores at the Sam Jose Mission, which was built 200 years ago for the Indians and was the site of some of the earliest performances in Texas. In the courtyard of the mission, a complete Mexican Christmas fiesta is held. This film presents significant parts of the miracle play, Los Pastores, as well as documentary details concerning the presentation and background of the play. The program runs approximately 30 minutes. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
