National Educational Television presidents. Time
to change that engine and then when we were born. The middle of a piece you were the center of the growing they did wrong in the wrong only different.
Oh it lowers your lawyers shyly at the station. I walked up from Asia where and who's to fetch it. Oh I don't care. Providence probably. If not your mother will have a fish it's not exactly her business is it but I know that I will love her for doing it. I say chuck away your silly weekend novel and talk to a cat. How do we get that filthy office my brain is simply blue moldy to talking about something intellectual. No now seriously bunny Ive come down here to have a pleasant weekend and I'm not going to put up with your confounded arguments if you want to argue or get out of this and go on over to the congregation with ministers he's in a lot of arguing he likes it when you can't argue with a chap whose livelihood depends on his not letting you convert him and would you mind not calling me Bunny. My name is Bentley Summerhays which you please. What's the matter with the only thing that puts me in a false position. You ever consider the fact that I was an afterthought. And after school do you remember the IOA the house stuff I don't want to know it's just the dogs to start an argument don't worry it won't overtax your brain. My father was 44 when I was born my mother was 41 I was 12 years difference between
me and the next eldest I was unexpected was probably unintentional. My brothers and sisters are not the least like me. That's a regular thing that you always get in the first batch from your own parents quite pleasant ordinary do the regular things so nobody no brains like you old chap. Thank you. Don't mention it now I'm quite different from the time I was born the old couple used as a child I came out all brains a normal body that is actually necessary and a good deal older than you though you were born five years sooner. Everybody feels that when they hear a stall so it sounds quite natural to hear me calling you Johnny it sounds ridiculous and I'm becoming for you to call me Bunny. Does it bug you oppose what you just stop me doing it if you can that's all. But if you go on doing it after I've asked you not to feel in office why pleased I should but I suppose you're not so particular. I'll tell you one of these web or you need a good talking to and I'm just the one to do it. Not if you think that because your father's a K.C.B. and you want to marry my sister you can make yourself as nasty as you like and say what you please your mistake Carrie. Let me tell you that except Hypatia not one person in this house is in favor of
your marrying her. I don't think she's she's happy about of herself the match isn't settled yet don't you forget that you're on trial in the office because the governor isn't giving us all the money for an Iowa man to live on and you're on trial here because my mother thinks a girl should know what a man is like in the house before she marries him. That's been going on for two months now and what's the result. You've got yourself only to slide to the office and you're getting yourself thoroughly disliked here all for your bad manners and your conceit and the damn impudence you think I shall take you. You don't suppose I hope that I should have come down if I know not how you all feel you know you know when you sit down do you hear. That's the advantage of having more body and brains that allows me to teach you manners. And I'm going to do it you'll get a spoiled young pop in you need a jolly good licking and you'll get it if you're not careful. I'll see to that the next time you call me a swine. I didn't call you wish when I join asks why you're engaged you're angry. You are CAN YOU ARE A LIAR you are a bully and I should like to wring your neck for you. What I'm trying trying
trying trying trying. Now. All right all right. Or use your mother as hard as you please it won't stick to me. What I don't understand is this. How is it that your father who I suppose is the strongest man England has produced in our time or you got that from your hate in the newspaper a lot you know about him. I don't pretend to do anything but in my room and be proud of him as an Englishman. One for my respect for him I would have stood your cheek for two days let alone two months. I don't understand why you didn't like it out of you when you were a kid for 25 years you kept a place twice as big as England in order a place full of seditious coffee colored heathens and pestilential white agitators in the middle of a lot of savage tribes and you couldn't keep you in order. I don't pretend to be half the man your father undoubtedly is but by George is a lucky thing for you that you weren't my son I just taught you to behave yourself. Yes behavior wouldnt come naturally to you also I would know you keep a civil tongue in your head you hear it all stand on your snobbery.
I'm just as proud of Tolkien's underwear as you are of your father's title in this case CB and all the rest of it. My father began a little hole of a shopping needs no bigger than our pantry down the passage there. Yes I know I've read it. The romance of business or the story of child and underwear. Peace take love. Well I took one the day after I first met HYPATIA. I went and bought half a dozen. Think about this for her sake. Where do they shrink. Oh don't be a fool never mind what I'm a fool. Did they shrink. That's the point. Did you get your money's worth. I couldn't have them in my skin just because your customers hides. I did soon address myself to not make greater. Don't talk rot. You make me pity you for romance of business indeed the real romance of trawlers business is the story that you understand nothing about it. You never could explain any mortal thing about To me what I asked you the last time that was the beginning and the ending of your wisdom your nothing but the truth of it which you call the spit.
If you don't take that back and apologize for my sound you will sound off. John are you there and that there Johnny will get the document and give you something just to meet with me on a wall or speak a word and yes I know I beg your pardon Johnny frightens me. You know you see this you hear me and I'm too small to defend myself against Johnny Johnny. How often have I told you you must not fully the little ones that I thought you don't gotta know that I do not play I love my job is protected makes it possible to live in the house with a few
friends for two years mother since you have that role with me forgiving Hypatia a black guy because you bit me I promise you then that I never raise my hand to anyone again and I've never broken my word and now because this young will begin to cry over for her to treat me as if I were to plead to the savage not to savage but you know you must go on a visit to not to let him enjoy your fear of the truth my mother need to hear Johnny's not just turn to another we better go. Yes that would be best done. John we didn't mean any harm to himself. Full story for you on the market seems rational feel better now. I know only one person live right here on the bridge trying to commit
murder and that person is my son wasn't he as the car stopped I had to yell which is only too familiar to me. It generally means that some infuriated person is going to thrash Bentley. Nobody has ever succeeded though almost everybody has tried. Bentley is a problem with our confess I've never been able to solve it was supposed to be a great success at the age of 50. Most English when I was close enough to be born to be great successes of the age of 24 at most. The domestic problem for me is how to enjoy a Bentley until he is 50. The problem for the nation is how to get itself governed by men whose growth has been arrested when they were little more than college left and the big friendly doesn't really mean to be offensive. You can always make him cry by telling him you don't like him. Only if the crowd is so loud. The experiment should be made in the open air in the middle of souls great plane if possible. Here is a
penetrating intellect and the remarkable power of looking facts in the face. But unfortunately being very young he has no idea of how very little of this sort of thing most of us can stand. You'll forgive me for rambling on like this about my son. Oh yeah. Did it on purpose I wasn't quite myself I needed a moment to pull round Thank you. Not at all is your father at home. No he's opening another of his free libraries is another nice little penny gone. He's mad on reading promised another Free Library last week is ruinous and we hit you as hard as it does me when Bunny marries HYPATIA. When all Hypatia's money is thrown away on free libraries where will they come in. Can't you stop him. Fraid not he is a perfect world and indefatigable of Public Works. Wonderful man I think public work he does too much of it. It's really a sort of laziness getting away from your own serious business to amuse yourself with other people's. It's the danger of public business is that it never ends a man may kill himself. So I say you know it's really really encouraging to me to know that you agree with me
because we have no one agrees with you only you know that a lot of my church was Utah. So use my saying anything I'm a child I'm still I have no influence. Besides you know how to ask your man what you see are you having me just now when I was making myself a fool of myself over Bernie. Not at all. Oh yes I was I know I was. My blessin father would come in and have told me to control myself as if I was losing my temper on purpose beyond what have you come I will make you have a silly ass of myself here. I'm awfully sorry Johnny old chap why don't you kick me when I go on like that. As we came through goggling I talked I heard yelling. Yes we should think you did. Johnny was rather rough on me though. He told me nobody here likes me and I was silly enough to believe him and all the women have been kissing on pitying ever since to stop your crying as a baby I did cry. I feel good after crying it relieves my wretched nerves. Not at all ashamed of yourself for instance when I started feeling ashamed of myself I should have time for anything else all my life
I feel very fit and spry. Let's all go down to meet the grand tram doesn't wish to talk to like being called the Grand Champion sing Brantley. Well he thinks he's too modest for it because I'm self plain John but you can't call him that new office. Besides it doesn't suit him. When I saw him go down to meet him the last telephone for me over to say he's on the road. Thank you I prefer a quiet afternoon. We're going to shock us joy. You've had enough of me one weekend. Would you like me why don't we buy the seats are you going to be supporting the right to make profit. For the idea this was going down to me to go in on you know you wouldn't think it but the governor likes bunny bunnies cultivating it shouldn't be a bit surprised if you only could squeeze me out one of these days you know. Don't say show the young rascal I should like you know some shoebox. We don't I don't wish to mention the one you know I like to shoot me down to the ground.
All right I didn't want to have some tea. No thank you I'm not allowed to eat and I'm ashamed to say that I'm not done with that beautiful vase of the all yours let me replace it with that IMO. Glad to be rid of it. When my former Castle Rock Bunny said it was a mess of operation that night. Yet you keep telling us that was exceedingly rudimentary Mr tough and I hope you'll go to let you know it doesn't matter what you don't know if he says it to me bro. Never mind about that. I'll get the gown to come and take the pieces away. Oh dear that I've done it again. I don't want to go. Last summer I said to a funny thing but now I'm getting old I'm sinking back into the ways that John and I had when we had barely hundred a year. You
should have known me when I was 14 I talked like a duchess. There comes a time when your let matters so little one queen look up for miles when they reach our time of life let you alone for given that they got a pretty ten year old humbug you know that its embrace John doesn't know it and Johnny doesn't know it but you and I know it. That something even you dogs wisdom be all put there we all want without another thing. I don't know all the details in there only that way. I used to think Dorsey was a lot to me enjoy. There are always giving in to tell you not care about anything but you get used to it to everybody. It wasn't my fault they say
that always means they want you to lend them money and you would never do that Hypatia because they say how come they don't make anything you see. No dear you must be afraid of the outer stop Crissy only human creatures like ourselves are going to be afraid of them are you know we're not afraid of them exactly. But you've got to pick up their way. I never agreed with your father's notion of keeping clear of them and sending you to a school that was so expensive they couldn't afford to send their daughters there. Girls who are from the big business families like ourselves. It takes all sorts to make a world and I wanted you to see a little love all sorts. When you Mattie Bunny and go among the women of his father's set they are shock you first the things they talk about who do know you don't know. We all do that that's only human nature. They have no
notion of decency. I shall never forget the first day I stepped the marchioness to the Duchess and the ladies this I've never had a mission and it was the Marchioness doll to talk to sold things drainage. She tried three systems in their cars when she was going to do away with the truck. I didn't know which I'm going to look. When she started talking they all of got up and gone out of the room but they were all just banish they all had systems and each one of them live there with my chain and one of the Duchess's ostomy was sort of system I had. I said I was sure you of all times things are not going to change the song. Then one of the Duchess's did anything that how she expected to live to be over 100 if she can regularly let me
listening to her that and the neverending dead to think that just simply isn't in their life. They had nice good women the things I did and had to do since we just didn't mention it don't pretend to know anything about this and they can't do anything. LOL I am sure you feel that this is on a week when I eat slowly.
Yesterday we celebrated like one of those special little dogs. Yeah a bit of a mongrel myself for the rights of my dog. This for every day that goes by the same dear little fellow but I never see him for I have been what was your age. Some crazy stuff my old restaurant called Everything I you think this is a little sweeter to see the other chances I had. One of them has as much praise in his own body. And he has this little thing which is I can do tell one from the other. They wouldn't even have money if they weren't the sums of their followers like Charlie still to do. I never met anybody like pancake fall. He may be small but he's the best of the. How does all that mean you're not in love with Blondie. How could anybody be in love with me.
I like you to kiss me just as I like a baby to kiss me. I'm fond of those we are seeing is very clever. I am not what you call gone. Bottom if that's what you mean then why need you marry him. What better can I do. I must marry somebody I suppose. I've realized that since I'm 23 I always used to take it as a matter of course I should be married before I was 20. To me what do you mean the pressure we're getting going to the right girl or is it your only goal. Oh and bunnies women. You see here you were never sure. They flew my what you call your Usenet NG which is pretty well together. Just because I know you yourself all you know about it I'd like to see how we might shake your booty.
Hello love. Woo me. Lose wrinkles these gray years this repulsive What is it. Now I ask you what a jolly nice and venerable old man don't be discouraged I haven't read your wife's room for sharing John tell him to read his Bible or for the good of German children to read the Bible when you know it won't. I was carried away by over 40 years of driving and prone to read it when I was young. Then one evening a picture that put a hotel in Sunderland. When I left all my papers in the train I found it wasn't half bad. But if you want to understand old age scientifically read Joel NYC Of course if you want to understand it Romantic me read about Solomon and have your teach all yes Chickabiddy not drop into a raft when I'm improving the boy's mind. Where was I.
Ah this repulsive mask that my boy is another invention of natural selection to disgust young women with me and give you lads a chance because I won't have it. That's a forbidden subject. They talk of the weakness and the vanity of women painting their faces and wearing Alben wigs at 50. But why shouldn't thing. Why should a woman allow nature to put a false smile on her when she knows she is just as wrong as ever. Why should the glass and see a wrinkle Ari when I touch a firearm. Push over a glorious truth the wrinkles are indoors during a pale young man. So far she doesn't want to repel young men. Suppose she will actually bunny take Hypatia out for a turn around the grounds that's a good boy. John has one of his naughty fits this evening. Oh never mind me I don't mind I'm used to it I am not. I never heard such conversation. I can hardly believe my ears. And mind you this is the man who objected to my marrying his daughter on the grounds of the marriage between a member of the great and good middle class with one of the vicious and grubbed aristocracy would be in this alliance to please this is the
man I've adopted as my father would have adopted me as her father. Yes that's an idea of mine. I once knew a chap named Joey Percival at Oxford or she was most awfully clever chap. Nice enough to have made such a difference between him and all the other pups and he told me it was quite simple they had only one father apiece and he had three. Don't talk nonsense. Could that be overly simple His father you see would shrug the first one. The regulation natural chap. He kept a sort of tame philosopher about the house sort of colored Herbert Spencer kind of causing all that was a second father and then his mother was an Italian princess. She had an Italian priest always of others are supposed to take charge of her conscience. Before I could make out you jolly well took charge of his own freedom took charge of Joey's conscience. He used to hear them arguing like mad about everything. He said he could only have three mothers as well even backed himself against Napoleon. How that's an idea that's a most interesting idea. A most important idea. You always were one for ideas John. Right Chickabiddy were Johnny when he brags about of underwear Nazi underwear.
Then our beer. Anybody here may go nowhere anybody can sell underwear. Tarzan's ideas. That's what's done it. I've often thought of putting them up over the shop take me into partnership when you do. Man I wish did all the underwear I would actual come in strong of the idea if you were a good lad. Perhaps your way I'm sure you miss out our Chickabiddy it's all right. Don't flush your precious John Ishaan for free. But I'm getting sick of the 35 years I've had of it. Same brush little stairs to go up and down every day same old same old game. Sorry I am a star. And now I'll chuck it all and try something else something that will give a scoped all my faculties as money and I know when I was nine and Wildcat right here there is money in me madam no matter what I'm going to. Don't job. Don't tempt Providence which you don't understand. Providence Providence likes to be tempted. That's the secret of a successful man. Read Browning You are full of these today old man bring you joy of
life. Prediction. Can't think what to do in life your friend Mr. Percival down here for a visit. I should think not. You throw me over as soon as you set eyes on him for shade. But who do you suppose I think you get my brains with a full size for me. Oh thank you I shall take jolly good care to keep joy out of this until Hypatia is well past rainbow. Why have you stayed away so long. Yes I should have come sooner. I'm still rather lost in England. The fact is that as I have nothing to do I never have time to go anywhere. Paradox paradox. Good paradoxes are the only truth. Read Chesterton over the watch for you to do it here you have a genius for government. You learn your job out there enjoying your company where we want to govern me or anyone else. Yes but in Ginger's car you have to govern the right way. If you don't you go under and come home. Here everything has to be done the wrong way to suit governors who understand nothing but particularly those who don't know what the moving about.
I don't understand these Democratic games and I'm afraid I'm too well to live still Democracy's all right you know. RE M. re Jefferson democracy reads well but it doesn't act well like some people. Plays of note of my friend to make democracy work you need an average to crappy democracy and to make aristocracy work you mean a Democratic aristocracy you got was the end of it. Still you know the Superman make of the Superman's an idea I believe in ideas. What's his name. Readings are dangerous and wheels markdowns and I wish I could persuade your Free Library people of their own. My mind is really going to have an education on the conferees the end of it. How do you get a man to read Julian told you everything else believe that. That's good sense and he was in a game of tennis. Let's have some more improving conversation would you rather jolly if you ask me you know Johnny I don't come of age in mind you don't read. Yes I do. I wish you what you like to pay for page I read more than you do.
I don't talk about it so much but I like a book with the plot. You like a book with nothing in it but some idea of a chap who writes it keeps chasing like a cat chasing its own tail. I like a bit of that but it will do what a man soon gets tired of that sort of thing. The trouble is you look almost as a sort of God. I hope optimism that I pay to do a certain thing for me. I pay him to amuse me to take me out of myself and to make me forget all wrong principle you want to remember. Read Kipling if Kipling wants to remember the remember the Vienna run tall tins underwear to be jolly glad to forget. When I buy a book I'll go to the theater I want to forget myself and forget to shop from the moment I go into the moment I come out that I pay my money for giving me a home. It was his and all that he should be permitted to anybodies of all other men.
Oh you see John I tell you Johnny has as much to say for himself as anybody when he likes. I'm no fool mother whatever some people may fancy. I ought to have been a writer. I'm essentially a man of ideas. When I was a young man I sometimes used to pray that I might for a new show that I should be justified in going out of business and going on or something. Something first class but it was no good. I couldn't train Purdie Here's what change was wrong surely. You were not to me for some occasion my search for the man was a Mediterranean summer shoot on his eyes he sees the drama of his life as a spectator sees a play if you will find no one sees the comic side of it more than the spirit of life. Everyone we've used except as an
ID and this I do think that meditating on his desk job from the trappings of the tragedy and the Philosopher but in plain cotton crops like any other man and when he said Hold on. My human soul is on the way to the wife's body all the daylong telling me but I do think John is revealing ranging I think he was meant to be a king. My family used to look down on John because he was a great collector and John kept a shop. Tears dried up to borrow money so often from him but he used to console himself by saying Well after all he's only a little drake. But then one day he said to me John is the king very much to the bar on that occasion. Pleasure. Oh don't scold the last eight hours to say something like that if it was to be his last one dollar.
Besides he's quite right. My father would ask for as usual fivefold and John gave him a hug. Just like a king. Well I must go and make a do in a Welsh rabbit he expects one on special occasions. Jolly comes back on ask him where to put the Turkish bar. Turkish models are his latest games to go and play tennis with Johnny you must take it to south you are going to tell your mother maybe a ship of war promised you two more inches around the church this summer. I tried exercises with an india rubber expander but it didn't work. Instead of my expanding here crumpled me up. Come on join the first of all because you will do so very wrong. At last we may never know was told told all my life and I listened to dinner I listened to the talking when the last I will read or listen to
Johnny make me feel very guilty I told you all. Oh I don't mind. But it must have been dreadful to see you turns would only realize how they bore the children. Roomful of time is going to be on the point screen where we really don't know you are very clever. That's what's so difficult because it makes it so hard to avoid listening. You see I'm young and I do so want something to happen. My mother says the phone line. I mean we only do we live now lings have Tyreke. I want to learn is that to me changing on his destiny. Saturday asked me to meditate on how I haven't had a chance to get everything that's happened to him. Nothing's happened to me. That's why this on the ending. So now
we're on the interesting to me this eternal cackle cattle cattle about things in general is only fit for old people. I don't want to tell you from the stand that you know I'm a tree. Besides I'm not going out of my own free will exactly I came because you wanted me to come to you you know on. I did not stop to consider whether I wanted to or not because when I read your letter I knew I had to sell a book of numbers without really really don't falsely call you a blackmailer to your friends. You asked me to come down here and talk to the one who mentioned casually that if I didn't have a nobody for you to talk about me to but frankly I wanted you to come for my auction of talkativeness. I love talking to you. I let myself go. I can say things to you my dogs a lot of people are wondering why you over must leave experience.
Let my grown up man has given himself away to mean anything in order to use it only makes you to wrap yourself up in your town job to that Bill Clinton put on hands. Besides I've got a teaching tool almost to sort of live for you no no no no I don't know. When as you say I made a not a photo of myself believe me. I mean you know when I was so Jewish not by adding time to expect him not long now claimed not even by the design of second childhood for child companion. But try the innocent impulse to play is the delicacy and wisdom and spirituality of my age at the affectionate service a real use for a few years. The end of which you want to be in a grown strong fall widow. Alas my dear the delicacy of age reckoned without the derision and cruelty of abuse.
You told me that you didn't want to be an old man's nurse and the judge didn't want to be on the side of children like that. Oh I know it serves me right I don't reproach you. I was an old fool. I don't blame you for falling in love with me I should be grateful to you all my life because that was something happening at last with engines because you know. Oh I'm not proposing any of my friends to be behind the scenes. If I'd been 17 I should fall in love with you even as does I feel quite different it will towards you than I do to another old man. So you may kiss my hand if it will be any fun little you don't know how dare you walk out of one of these how cold I was cynical how if I were really close to Crewe Oh stop it only did your time have a great many things I'd never tried. Oh no it is not alone that I've not forgotten the brutality of my own views. But try to learn a lot of the shocking news that you all the danger is squeamish sentimental festival. If you could
possibly think of me as an angel and often and when we get on much better together we get on very well I think no one else ever told me of the O-ring of these style like that or you'll see only the stick's person wanted to know what I'm going to the mall be cases you seem doing when brought up in a normal respectable middle class family. You'll go on marking the most outrageous type of the rankest Bohemianism. Oh that's just it mind with respect to dealing with propriety. I don't want to be caught. I don't want to be there. I don't want to be told that it was either good or bad. I wanted to be an active license to be like I simply won't escape the wicked escape. Well I can't be poor but I envy you. Yeah that I'm quite sure if I had to be here do you think that's easy. Well isn't it. Being a man you want to know. Well it requires some natural
talent. Anyhow I mean to make a fight for a living to live one's own life I believe the Sufi just phrases these thing and they like living instead of withering. Without even a god to see if you off when you are rotten I will lead an active life and I've with all the saying you know you won out. That's quite different than your life. We wouldn't have fallen in love with me. Really I don't know you like ha. Not I don't really want to think about your mother. And if you must feel something terrible was coming the moment. Well what would you call a man who's a good girl. Oh my Jesus daughter yes yes I know I was going to say his grand daughter. You always have one more blow to getit seems sinister to tell you why an old woman I dare say she's got a young face but squeamish always on the string.
The shriek detestable expression told Oh you've got a little thing like that what good do you want to know that I was away. I don't know I don't know. I mean maybe David on your homework is pretty good. Forgot all about the rabbit and put it clean out of my head. Besides why should I give away to him over to introspection. It's a sign of madness to arrange some ways as my little girl been entertaining it. Oh yes she is a wonderful entertainer. I think my idea for bringing up young girls but rather to success. OK listen to this but since I have to make you conceited she's never been treated like a child. I always saw the same thing to her mother that I read what she likes to go where she likes let her do what you like that's all oh yes a banner They've been anything but me to read any place I wanted to go or anything to do. How do you
say you want I mean she's a wrestler she's not satisfied she wants things the husband wants adventures to drop out of the sky. If you're going to talk about me in my education I offer help. She's acting like me. She actually wanted me to for another shot. Well they have a world innocent laugh. So difficult questions of bringing up children between ourselves is beating me. How did you manage. It is something I really hadn't time to be a father that's the plain truth of the matter. How could I when the whole province on my hand. They and I are acquaintances Well perhaps not quite ordinary acquaintances. This is all of my life. I should always go to the sort of remorse about the way we shake hands when we do shake hands. Which means I
suppose that we are sorry we don't care more for one another and we don't feel that we can help we put each other too much out of countenance. How did they do it's a very difficult relation to my mind not altogether unnatural. That's an idea. I don't think anybody's ever written about. But I still thought that your case was entirely different after all you know your own children. I'm not so sure of it. Fact is what their Summerhays once childhood is over. Once the little animals got past the stage where it acquires what you might call a sense of decency and software the relation between parent and child. Can't get over the all source shyness of shyness shyness or read Dickens Charles Dickens. You're not serious. Oh I don't mean his books nor read his letters to his family. Read any man's letters to his children why they're not human. They force the shy letters
to be published that says if I tell you there's a wall ten feet thick and 10 miles high between parent and child I know what I'm talking about. If I'm not in a thousand years it'll be considered bad form to know who your father and your mother are embarrassing to the family and we want to see Amre playing at al la Schiff's.

Description
Episode Description
Misalliance caused more annoyance than any other play by George Bernard Shaw. The frivolity outraged his friends and the general audience, though the rough and tumble in the play is there to give relief from its more serious elements. The main theme of the play is love, interwoven with the relationships of husbands and wives and parents and children, with some interesting observations on the rapidity with which advanced ideas become out of date. The play is a comedy with elements of farce, but being typically Shaw, "Misalliance" goes beyond the merely comic, Shaw's plays do not end in a joke but in a vision of life which provokes more than mirth. The plot concerns a group gathered at the country home of the Tarleton's. Mr. Tarleton is a wealthy underwear manufacturer who feels that he receives no respect from his son and daughter. He believes in practical education, but finds that his children are impractical and that his daughter laughs at his ideas. Tarleton suspects that even his wife in her own placid way is in league against him. Visiting the Tarleton's are Lord Summerhays, a diplomat, and his son Bentley a spoiled weakling who takes calculated advantage of his puniness to get his own way and throws tantrums on the floor when all else fails. Bentley is engaged to Tarleton's daughter, Hypatia. Suddenly into the midst of this group and their interrelationships, crashes a Polish aviatrix, Lina Szczepanowska. In her stimulating presence, the audience begins to discover why Mr. Tarleton and Lord Summerhays receive so little respect from their children: they deserve very little. Both the elderly men try to makes love to Lina, followed by the younger men, equally without success. To add to the confusion, the son of a woman with whom Mr. Tarleton once had a mild affair tries to shoot him to avenge "wrongs" done to his mother. Between Lina's unsettling presence and the threat of assassination, all the members of the group come to some understanding of their situation. Tarleton's son comes to his father's defense. The would-be assassin is cajoled into submission by Mrs. Tarleton; the daughter breaks her engagement and catches instead the occupant of the crashed plane, proving she has some sense about men after all; and Lina decides to carry of the spoiled Bentley to make a real man of him. The play was produced on location in Woodside, California, and performed by the American Conservatory Theater. "Misalliance" is a National Educational Television production, produced through the facilities of KQED, San Francisco. The piece runs approximately 2 hours and was recorded on videotape. This production has been supported in part through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
