- Episode Description
- Natalie and Therese put to use the material of Lesson Eight in a live skit with more practice in telling time in French. (Text: pg. 30-36) (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
- Series Description
- French through Television is an introductory course in French which was originally recorded on film and produced by Language Research, Inc., under the supervision of Christine Gibson, lecturer at Harvard Universitys Graduate School of Education. The series, which was telecast over WGBH-TV, Boston, received a first place Ohio State award this year in systematic instruction. The 48 half-hour episodes comprise 24 lessons with 24 variants to teach and implement the vocabulary and structure. The first few episodes, because of scanty review material for 30-minute presentation and to discourage rote memorizing, are more steeply graded. French through Television is based on the Pocket Book (Cardinal Edition), French through Pictures. Pocket Book distributors are placing French through Pictures on the newsstands in the cities where French through Television will be telecast; it is recommended that students who are following the course get a copy of the 35 cents book as a study aid. In the individual program descriptions, which follow, the parenthetical text references are to French through Pictures. French through Television teaches the first 112 pages of French through Pictures by means of chains of related sentences pictorially explained and spoken by native voices as speech models for repetition by the viewing audience. The series, which was filmed by WGBH-TV, was produced and directed by Robert Larsen with drawings by Otmar Sprah and stick film by Televix. The model voice heard throughout the series is that of Claude Levy, doctoral candidate at Harvard. He has taught French at the Phillips Exeter Academy and later at Brown and Nichols Schools, Cambridge. He is assisted on the screen by Therese Morrel and Natalie de Beauharnais, both of whom have recently come to the U.S. from France. Therese is a promising young sculptor and has exhibited twice in France. Natalie is a direct descendant of Napoleons Josephine by her first marriage. All three are natives of France.
