Episode Description
The stories featured in the episode are: 1. Jungle war between Indonesia and Malaysia. An on-the-spot look at Great Britain's involvement in the highly volatile area of Southeast Asia. Viewers join a patrol of British officers, Gurkha soldiers, and Malaysian head hunters as they make their way through the Malaysian jungle close to the Indonesian border. 2. The bitter reaction of the Irish populace to the increasing influx of German and other foreign business men into southern Ireland. The inhabitants are extremely distributed by the rate at which these foreign elements are buying up land and setting up businesses. 3. Host and commentator John Freeman interviews Patrick Gordon Walker, the man most likely to become British Foreign Minister in the event that the Labor Party wins the upcoming English elections. Mr. Walker comments on U.S. relations with Cuba, Britain' attitude toward Laos, the question of admitting Red China to the United Nations, and Great Britain's role in NATO. 4. A visit to the changing southern Italian city of Naples. Until recently the city has been out-of-step with the rest of the country because of its lack of industry. Of late, however, industrialization has been gradually taking hold in Naples. BBC commentator Trevor Philpots evaluates the effects of industrialization on the natives of the city. 5. The Story of Dona Ramouna. A tongue-in-cheek essay by the BBC's Alan Wicker on Dona Ramouna, the mistress of Porfirio Diaz, President of Mexico from 1877 to 1880 and 1884 to 1911. Mr. Wicker visits her hometown in Mexico where viewers see the statue erected to her memory, the villa Diaz built for her, and the railroad line the president has rerouted so that it would run beneath her window. Johh Freeman, editor of The New Statesman and well known British television host, commentator and interviewer, is commentator. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
