Description
Description
Actor, playwright, director, choreographer, clown - the remarkable Bill Irwin defies categorization. It's been 25 years since Irwin began clowning around with San Francisco's famed Pickle Family Circus, and today his comic antics and physical feats are well known through his original works including the Broadway productions of the Tony Award-winning Fool Moon, The Regard of Flight and Largely/New York. Audiences have delighted in his innovative comedic brilliance in a diverse career that has ranged from Lincoln Center's production of Waiting for Godot with Robin Williams and Steve Martin, Hollywood blockbusters like Robert Altman's Popeye and How the Grinch Stole Christmas to SESAME STREET's Mr. Noodle. This program details how Irwin creates his brand of theater, his lifelong pursuit of the clown and his relationship to the work of many of the physical comedy legends such as Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd and Red Skelton, who have inspired him. Centered around the current season of his work at New York's Signature Theatre, the program features an updated production of Regard; the world premiere of The Harlequin Studies, Irwin's take on the lewd and lazy rogue of Commedia dell'Arte; and Mr. Fox: A Rumination, the story of the rise and fall of George Fox, America's first celebrity clown.
