It's time for Friday night jazz here on VPR with Ruben Jackson your host as always we're here from eight until 11 playing some of the best of this art form this still growing still and trancing art form known as jazz thank you as always for being with me hope you brought the the clam dip and all that stuff I'll I'll supply the music we'll begin the evening with a two thousand six recording on the ECM label by trio beyond composition written by saxophone is Joe Henderson entitled if oh .

Our opening performance on this party that we call Friday Night Jazz on VPR comes from Trio Beyond, an aggregation consisting of drummer Jack Dijonette, Larry Goldings on keyboards and guitarist John Scofield. Again, from 2006, the collection is entitled Saudage, and we heard a piece written by saxophones Joe Henderson entitled If. Back in September, specifically September 15th, Governor DeVal Patrick of Massachusetts named that date Marion Brown Day after the great and somewhat under sung keyboardist saxophones to pass the couple of years ago.

We, too, wanted to honor his varied subtle, but arresting body of music with two selections here. We're going to start with material released back in 1963. The CD is entitled Geechy Recollections, and this is an original by Marion Brown entitled Once Upon a Time, A Children's Tale. . . . .

. . . . . Two performances by the late saxophonist, pianist, essayist, painter, poet, you name it Marion Brown. As I mentioned at the outset here, September 15th was Marion Brown Day in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It was proclaimed by Governor DeVal Patrick. Some of you may know this, but DeVal Patrick's father was Pat Patrick the long-time baritone saxophonist in the son-rar orchestra. Back to Marion Brown here, we concluded with a piece entitled, a flower is a love something, a Billy Strayhorn composition, from a 1985 CD entitled, Songs of Love and Regret. Marion Brown on alto saxophone, Mal Waldron on piano, and we began with music from 1973, a collection entitled, Geechy recollections, a piece written by Marion Brown,

once upon a time, a children's tale, Marion Brown on reeds, Woodada Leo Smith on percussion, Steve McCall on drums, Juma Santos, who also played on Miles Davis's, Bitches Brew, who was part of the large ensemble that Jimmy Hendrix brought to Woodstock, still active musician, living in the Woodstock, New York area. Anyway, all of this beauty contributing to the music and now the legacy of Marion Brown here on Friday night jazz on VPR. I'm Rubin Jackson, your host, and thanks as always for being with me. We'll be swinging till 11 p.m. Speaking of Jimmy Hendrix, I've spent a fair amount of time, the last few weeks, and I know this is still a young program, celebrating what would have been the 70th year of Jimmy Hendrix's time on Earth. His birthday was, and is November 27th, going back to a CD that came out this year, entitled, Bromberg Place Hendrix.

It's a bassist, Brian Bromberg, and his rendition of Hey Joe. It's been a long time since I've been here, and it's been a long time since I've been here.
