- Description
- 'The Annoying Music Show' (TAMS) merits Peabody consideration because it makes people laugh. TAMS is a weekly national comedy program highlighting music that should never have been recorded. Not simply bad music, but selections that 'just miss the mark' often recorded by the world's most talented musicians and singers. Examples include 'Hey Jude' by Bing Crosby, 'The Ballad of the Green Berets' by Kate Smith, 'American Pie' by The Brady Bunch, and 'Eleanor Rigby' by Walter Brennan, etc. (See support materials -'The Annoying Music Show Play list') TAM'S creator and host (Jim Nayder) takes the word annoying -very seriously. Mr. Nayder does not play songs that are of a 'novelty' nature, or those attempting to be intentionally funny. Only songs that were produced as serious efforts are considered. (See support materials -'The Annoying Music Show Mission Statement') TAMS crosses all musical formats and audience demographics. Classical, Pop, Rock, Country, Alternative, Soul, etc. have all been featured on the show. TAM'S is interactive. In addition to the music, listeners are invited to offer suggestions, send music, and voice compliments and complaints via mail, phone, and WEB postings. Often the funniest moments are listeners exclaiming on-air how 'annoyed' the are by the program. It is simply a much anticipated 'laugh-break' for radio listeners. TAMS is extremely popular. It is now heard on 123 NPR and commercial stations in the US, Britain, and Australia. The program has been featured in hundreds of national publications and network television & radio news programs. On the strength of the radio show, host Jim Nayder has also become the 'regular annoying music correspondent' for NPR's 'Weekend Edition with Scott Simon', NBC's 'Today Show', and London's 'This Morning' program from Granada Television. (See support material -'Media Hits & Clips')) The show's popularity has been of special benefit to participating public stations. Special 'membership' and 'holiday' programs are produced and distributed during pledge drives. 'Annoying' memberships premiums are offered to participating stations including 'The Annoying Music Show Radio Hat!' (Sample enclosed) and the 'Annoying Music Show Defense Kit' (offering a full-body shield, ear-plugs, and custom air-sick bags). 'The Annoying Music Show' merits Peabody consideration because (as NPR's Scott Simon has stated) 'Annoying music is finally receiving the attention it so richly deserves!'--1997 Peabody Awards entry form. This is an Annoying Music Show segmetn from the October 18, 1987 episode of Weekend Edition Saturday.
