Description
Episode Description
"'Diving For Roman Plunder,' a one-hour documentary narrated by Captain Jacques Cousteau and Greek actress Melina Mercouri, explored one of the earliest examples in the more than two-thousand-year history of pillage of Greek art. "Captain Cousteau and his Calypso team retrieved and returned to Greece the ancient Greek treasures they discovered at the site of a Roman ship filled with booty that sank in the Aegean Sea during the century before [Christ's] birth. "The broadcast was set in the context of how the plunder of Greek art remains one of civilization's greatest, never-completely-resolved cultural scandals and how Roman emperors, Renaissance nobles, British and French aristocracy, and wealthy collectors from around the world stopped at nothing to obtain ancient Greek art as symbols of their refinement and status. "Cousteau's chief aim in producing 'Diving for Roman Plunder' was to return the art and artifacts recovered from the expedition to its rightful owner, Greece, where it is now on display in the National Museum in Athens. "'Diving for Roman Plunder,' one of a series of 'The Cousteau Odyssey' specials, was presented on March 14, 1978, on the Public Broadcasting Service."--1978 Peabody Awards entry form.
