Description
Episode Description
"For at least a million years, the Namib Desert has bordered 1300 miles of the Atlantic coast of southwestern Africa. In this sun-baked expanse of sand and rock, where temperatures may reach 170 degrees [Fahrenheit], live unusual plants and strange creatures that have adapted in amazing ways to one of this planet's most hostile environments. A spider draws its legs into a circle to cartwheel down the dunes for a swift escape from predators; geckos burrow deep under the sand to escape the harsh sun; the sand lizard lifts one foot, then the other, for relief from the incredible heat; and when the coastal fog rolls in, a beetle tilts its body head down, waiting for water droplets to trickle to its mouth so that it may drink and survive. This special captures glimpses of life in the Namib. "'The Living Sands of Namib' was intended for a general viewing audience."--1978 Peabody Awards entry form.
