Episode Description
This is the 1,000th program as described above.
Series Description
"For more than 20 years, the McGraw-Hill Companies have sponsored the Young Artist Showcase on WQXR. As the title suggests, the programs seek out especially deserving young musicians, and provide them with broadcast exposure. Hosted from the beginning by Robert Sherman, the series has introduced such now-celebrated performers as Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg. Emanuel Ax, Gil Shaham, and the three alumni artists who returned to celebrate the 1,000th edition of the Showcase: Violinist Chee Yun, cellist Allison Eldredge and pianist Akira Eguchi. "Taped 'live' in the McGraw-Hill Auditorium, the gala featured a presentation by New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and the world premiere of 'Gala 1000,' written especially for the occasion by the noted composer Seymour Barab. "The 1,000th program, as aired on April 2, 1997, is on side A of the enclosed cassette, and is our official submission for the Peabody Award. We taped more than would fit into that broadcast hour, however, so the extra materials appeared on our Young Artists Showcase of April 24, 1997. For the judges' possible interest, therefore, we have put that follow-up program on side B of the cassette."--1997 Peabody Awards entry form.
