- Program Description
- A documentary special made by NET in collaboration with the British Broadcasting Corporation to commemorate the 900th anniversary of Westminster Abbey. Westminster Abbey was completed on Christmas Day, 1065, and awaited consecration by Edward the Confessor, the King of England. But Edward, who had watched the massive church take shape from his own riverside palace, lay ill and within eleven days he was dead. He was the first of many British monarchs, poets, politicians, and clerics to be entombed in the Abbey, which has also seen the coronation of every English monarch except two since William the Conqueror, who vanquished the Saxons at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, yet another anniversary being celebrated this year. In nine centuries, Westminster Abbey has witnessed the major events that have shaped the destiny of England. Now the most important church in the British Commonwealth, its rich past and beauty attract tourists from all over the world.?The NET-BBC documentary conveys Westminster Abbey's role in the unfolding pageant of English history, and its meaning in the lives of the English people. The film utilizes the resources of great libraries, archives, and art galleries. Filming has taken place at Westminster Abbey itself, throughout England, and significant events from the Abbey's history have been specially dramatized for the program.?WESTMINSTER ABBEY is a production of the British Broadcasting Corporation and National Educational Television. Philip Donnellan is the producer for the BBC. Jay Sheers is the NET producer. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
