Description
Episode Description
Participants are Mr. Ziyad Husami, Lebanon; Miss Catherine Orcel, France; Mr. Padmanabh Gopinath, India; Miss Sara Chatt, United Kingdom; Miss Beatrice Kairupan, Indonesia; Mr. Young-Koo Lee, Korea; Mr. Edward Dennis Normandy, III, Philippines; Mr. Norbert Scholz, Germany; Miss Susan Rennie, Union of South Africa; and Mrs. Waller. They criticize American high school students for not showing respect for their teachers. Catherine said that she had been unable to find an American high school that teaches philosophy whereas that was the principal course of her last year of high school in France. "Music courses might be all right," she said, "if they taught musical theory instead of the cha cha cha." Beatrice comments, "American students complain of too much work with five subjects. We have eighteen and don't complain because we are so glad to have a chance to go to school. We learn to type by drawing a typewriter on a piece of paper." Two of the delegates disagree on the virtue of wearing school uniforms. The young people also discuss teaching methods, classroom discussions and co-education. This program is a repetition of the first panel of a program given by the young people at the 41st Annual Convention of the National Association of Secondary-School Principals held February 25, 1957, in Washington, DC. Series Description
"World We Want" is a TV discussion series by and for teenagers, but with an appeal to both younger and older audiences. It features 16 to 18 year olds from every corner of the earth, who are spending three months in the New York area as delegates to the New York Herald Tribune Forum. Discussions are presided over by Mrs. Helen Hiett Waller, forum director, with a maximum of encouragement to free expression and a minimum of moderator knows best interference. Programs give appearance of being quite spontaneous. In each of the programs, students discuss problems of concern to America and the world, giving their own point of view a range of diverse subjects. In the first season, which aired in 1954, 30 high school students from 28 countries participated. In the second season, 1955, students from some thirty foreign countries participated. The third season, airing in 1956, featured 33 high school students from as many countries around the world. In the fourth season, which aired in 1957, 33 students, 17 boys and 16 girls, from 33 different countries, participated in the discussions. The fifth season, airing in 1958, featured students from 34 different countries. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
