- Program Description
- This delightful farce by Moliere, who has been called the greatest of French playwrights, was performed by the APA-Association of Producing Artists, at the Phoenix Theatre in New York in its 1964 winter and spring season. The play deals with the many illusory and deceptive escapades of Scapin, a valet to an Italian nobleman, who ingeniously plots a double ransom scheme in a romantic quadrangle. Preceding the play is a ten minute biographical sketch in which Moliere, played by Paul Sparer, is hectically preparing his performers for an impromptu rehearsal of a play that he has written at the kings request. The king, not expected for two hours, arrives early, hears Molieres excuses for not having the play ready, and consents to watch any play that Moliere and his performers wish to present. Their choice is Scapin. The entire play, in three acts, takes place in a public square in Naples. Scapin, a comic servant, is told by Octave and Sylvestre of Octaves secret marriage to Hyacinthe, an unhappy young lady whose background is unknown. Scapin rehearses Octave to bravely face his father Argante, who they know will never accept the marriage. Scapins master, Leandre, finds himself in a situation similar to Octaves when he falls in love with a gypsy girl, Zerbinette. He enlists Scapins help in finding a way to squeeze money out of his tightwad father, Geronte, to buy his loved one from her fellow gypsies. Scapin plots a double ransom scheme in which he discourages Argante from having his sons marriage annulled and manages, with the help of Sylvestre, to coerce him into giving up the money Octave needs. Scapin then tricks the miserly Geronte into sacrificing the money Leandre needs to buy his mistress. Scapin is exposed when Zerbinette unknowingly tells the story of his subterfuge to Geronte. Argante and Gernote, both bitter from their experiences, threaten Scapin with punishment, but scheming Scapin devises another plan and escapes this fate. As the play ends, everyone has found a happy resolution to his problem and Scapin is once again returned to the good graces of all. Scapin is a 1966 Festival of the Arts presentation of National Educational Television. It was produced by the Association of Producing Artists.
