- Description
- Episode Description
- There is very little connected with the stage that Cyril Ritchard has not done. Since his first theatrical appearance at the age of 19 in his native Sydney, Australia, Mr. Ritchard has successfully, successively, and sometimes all at the same time, directed and acted in plays, operas, and television performances, and is as well responsible for several best-selling phonograph records, among them a full-length solo performance of Alice in Wonderland. Among his most famous roles are the cheerfully terrifying Captain Hook of the Peter Pan which starred Mary Martin; the extra-terrestrial critic of the Visit to a Small Planet; and the Governor of Peru in the Metropolitan Opera production of La Perichole, which he also directed. Lewis Carrolls Alice in Wonderland, and its famous sequel Through the Looking Glass are two of the most famous childrens books ever written. What makes them particularly interesting is that they were composed by a shy bachelor and professor of mathematics at Oxford University, whose most famous work from the Universitys point of view, was his dissertation Euclid and his Modern Critics. It may be the alphabet language of mathematics which encouraged the professor to compose such confusing, fascinating, and delightful nonsense poetry as Jabberwocky and The Hunting of the Snark. - Series Description
- Actor and actresses, businessmen and poets, professors and a baseball player participate in a new television series designed to bring more and better reading into the home. Television has been accused of discouraging reading; now it proves once again that it considers itself a partner, not a rival, of the printed word. Westinghouse Broadcasting Corporation has brought together distinguished men and women of our times to read aloud from their favorite books, to encourage families to read together. The classics of childrens literature which can be enjoyed equally well by the parents include Alice in Wonderland, The Wind in the Willows, The Red Badge of Courage, Huckleberry Finn, and the Just So Stories. the 12 half-hour episodes that comprise this series were originally recorded on videotape. The producer and director of Reading Out Loud is Lewis Freedman, a young man who has produced and directed some of the best public service and dramatic programs on television. Included in his background are a very successful association with the Camera Three program, the Garry Moore Show, and, most recently, with the Play of the Week. Richard Pack, Programming Vice-President of WBC and Executive Producer of Reading Out Loud, has distinguished himself in the field of public service programming. He has organized conferences for the broadcasting industry on Local Public Service Programming, and has also written many articles on subjects connected with this area of work. Michael R. Santangelo, Associate Producer of Reading Out Loud, is WBCs Director of Public Relations and Special Events. Creator of the series, he states that he thought of the series because of the obvious paucity of reading being done by American youth and adults.
