Description
Program Description
In the great hall of the UN General Assembly before an audience of delegates and their guests, Pablo Casals conducts a performance of his oratorio, ?El Pessebre? (?The Manager?). The performers are the Festival Casals Orchestra of Puerto Rico, the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, Robert Shaw conductor, and the following soloists: soprano Olga Iglesias, mezzo-soprano Lili Chookasian, tenor Paulino Saharrea, bass William Warfield, baritone Pablo Elvira, and soprano Margaret Hauptman. ?El Pessebre? is a work with which Casals has undertaken a personal crusade for world peace. Based on a Catalonian poem by Casals? friend Joan Alavedra, ?El Pessebre? tells the story of the Nativity in simple, lyrical, and expressive terms. It is in five parts ? ?The Annunciation to the Shepherds ? Birth of the Son of God,? ?On the Way to Bethlehem,? ?The Caravan to Bethlehem,? ?The Manger,? and ?The Adoration.? Casals wrote the first four parts during World War II in the little town of Prades in southern France to which he had exiled himself in protest against Spain?s Franco regime. The poet had not yet written the last, and it was not until 1960 that Alavedra resumed work on it at Casals? urging. The completed score was given its first performance in Mexico in 1962, and was performed later that year in San Francisco, Puerto Rico, New York, Italy, and France. Its performance at the United Nations in October, 1963 came shortly after the signing of the nuclear test ban treaty, and the mood of optimism in the General Assembly created a receptive framework for the music. ?UN Day Concert 1963 ? Casals ?El Pessebre? is a 1966 ?Festival of the Arts? presentation from National Educational Television. It was produced for NET by United Nations Television.
